Pimp My Berserker

Hello chaps.

I had wanted to carry on with the Badab project, but that can wait for now, plus I've been sidetracked with painting naked ladies and what-not just lately.

However, this little chap had been half made and stared at me accusingly every time that I opened the cupboard and I wanted to build and complete him before I decided to use the bits for another model.

It's a first go (just for a change...) at a Khorne marine, and an ideal opportunity to practice some brass NMM and also really improve my reds...

Anyway, I'll shut up and show you the progress thus far...

Mainly because i want to see how you handle it, I am gonna suggest you paint some scratches/mud on him. I'd be very interested in getting a mini-tutorial (just through your WIPs) on how that goes.

Otherwise he looks butter smooth, what I expect from you really.

Thanks guys! ;)

@ Graypaint - I will have some weathering and chipping at the end. Pretty much all of the marines that I do have a bit of wear and tear anyway, but I figure that a nutter like this isn't likely to spend too much time cleaning down between his slaughter orgies...

@Ein Windir - I hope that by the end, he'll have the requisite minimum amount of bling to at least stand in the background of a Lil Jon video, waving his crunk juice and pimp cane about...

Bit more progress last night, plus a bit of assembly...

And no self respecting Crunk marine is complete without a pimped out grill ;)

Enjoy.

PS This board moves really fast right now, doesn't it?

I think the "problem" with NMM is that you have to really enhance the highlights in order to fool your eyes and make it look like real metal, and that can sometimes destroy the mood of a figure - especially when talking about batcrazy, bloodthirsty, "playing with your guts", chaotic khorne berzerker dudes.

...but as I said - a very solid paintjob, and the NMM isn´t overly bright, so with some weathering i think you´ll pull it off ^_^

I don't know...

I think the metal is handled well enough to really be secondary to the red armor. I agree that all in all he is coming out really clean, but the paintjob is holding together really well.

besides who says that you can't paint your blood-thirsty madmen cleanly. I think sometimes the 40k fluff gets in the way of a good miniature, and it really shouldn't.

That being said I really want to see how you are going to handle the battle damage, paint chips, and (maybe?) gore.

Quite a lot of progress, but not finished yet...

Will prolly get him finished tomorrow/Tuesday

He looks ace. I like how the gold NMM ties with the red armour. I think a more "bling"gold would look out of place. After all his pose gives him all the bling he needs. It's like he just came out of codex "Poser Marines" (and I mean it in a good way).

My only criticism will be that the chainsword's teeth need something to differentiate them from the rest of the chainsword. But then I guess this part is still WIP.

I'll be waiting to see him finished...and maybe a gold NMM tutorial if you have the time. :P

Thanks BC. He is deffo a poser marine, no 2 ways about that ;)

The teeth are still a PIP.

The NMM gold/brass is a bit difficult to tutor, to be honest. Every piece that I do has a slightly different emphasis, and even on this model there is a different tone between the armour and the swords for instance.

The secret is to play with the colours - for this I used GW bubonic brown for the "gold" tone, P3 menoth base for highlight (similar to bleached bone, but more creamy), VMC smoke for a nice brown tone (similar to GW scorched brown, but more translucent)and VMC German Black Brown for the dark bits (no real GW equivalent on that one. Maybe devlan mud and badab black combined?).

It's nearly impossible to say that this is right and that is wrong with NMM, because light/shade, reflectiveness (if that's even a word) of the surface, oxidation and such all have to be considered. I just say find a composition of colours and play with them, using something like a brass coloured coin or anything around the house to give you a reference as to how they act in light.

The big thing with it is that you do have to be fairly bold with the contrasts otherwise it just looks yellow...

@Alpha - The red was quite painstaking to be honest. I have always struggled to get any pop! to the red, but I have found that this is due to a lack of shading, rather than a lack of highlight.

By doing the usual colours, as such I got the highlighted red - well maybe a few extras... VMC hull red, scab red, red gore, P3 Khador red (I think that's the name) and a couple of highlights of the Khador red mixed with sunburst yellow. By substituting the Khador red for blood red the final colour is much less orangey. If you have red ink a final very thin glaze would most likely give much the same effect.

The key really was lots of shading with hawk turquoise and a mix of VMC dark sea blue and VMC light sea grey. It draws you back to the redness and makes it look much better ;)

In short, this isn't a quick way to paint red, but a much more worthwhile way, in my opinion anyway B)

Cheers too, Asmodeus :D

For a rough guideline to NMM I have found that Thierry Hussers (arkaal) color-guide works really well - allthough he only uses Vallejo colours it´s possible to get a good idea of the color-theory even if you want to use P3 or Citadel paints.

@icaton: Very nice model you ended up wioth - did you change the head to a fleshcolour on the last pictures or are my eyes deceiving me? - IF it is fleshcoloured then I really like it - it adds a lot of ferocity to the model, and just the thought of him having that "khorne-grill" bolted to the face makes me shudder (in a good way ;))

Yes, Slah the model is a bare head with a bolt on grill... :o

It looked like a helmet earlier on because the whole model had a base coat of hull red to start off with.

For what it's worth, here's the English version of that guide - http://homepage.mac.com/thminiatures/Sites...ouleursnmm.html

Fingers crossed, he should be finished tonight

Iacton this guy looks fantastic. I really like that deep red because it is still rich and doesnt look flat or orange/pinkish as red often does. I'm starting to think you have the right idea just painting random chapters, it sure looks like quite a bit of fun and a great way to build up your skills. I imagine it will be frightening applying some weathering after having painstakingly painted him up so cleanly, but I know it will turn out great.
