Iron Hawks

This is my WIP chapter the Iron Hawks, their basicaly a chapter based around guerilla warfare and surgical strikes (more so then other marine chapters). They have camouflage schemes (each company specializes in battling in certain enviroments, though they will recieve basic training in all). And before you say it cammo marines is not heracy, they exsisted in 1st 2nd and 3rd editions.

The chapter has an unusualy big scout company (about 200+) due to sever losses, and due to a lack of power armour, each marine spends a longer period then usual as a scout before earning his right to wear power armour. This has had an effect on their stratagies, relying on more covert attacks favoured over full frontal assaults.

The Chapter has few tactical squads, with assault and devistator squads making up the bulk of power armoured marines (never used devistators before and i just love assault troops) .

No terminatour armour survived the chapters near total destruction, nor did any dreadnaughts or heavy armour ( I love terminatour armour and Im a huge fan of tanks and dreads too but my grey knights have filled that role, but they are on hold till the next forgeworld book is out).

Okay, thats a breif overview of my chapter without all the majour fluff that im rewriting.

Chapter colours for urban warfare. This will be my main focus, i may go on to other designs later on but im a huge fan of city fights.

Apart from their back packs the first 5 fully painted models from the 10 man assault squad.

All 10 of same assault squad, they will be split into 5 man combat squads.

The first 6 of a 10 man devistator squad, another plas and two lascannons to come and the last man.

They will be split into combat squads also though im unsure as to whether to have them set up as two las and two plas or one las and one plas and one las and one plas. I guess ill figure that out in time.

To come are 10 scouts, 10 sniper scouts and 2 land speeder storms, and ofcourse the centre peice for the army, my WIP thinderhawk gunship, whos engines should be arriving ni the post tomorrow.

Mould lines i find very difficult to spot... I always miss them even when i look over a model 10 times, and i get impatient. Its my own fault, I should take more time to do it. I suppose i should drill out the barrels, it would help finish them off, i always mess it up thats my problem, so ive always avoided it.

I think i want the lenses to be more of an ice blue rather then the ultramarines blue they currently have, i think it will bring them out a bit more.

*Opens can of threadomancy* Ah much better, right, update.

I finally got my first squad of iron hawk assault squad finished. Bar the jump packs. and I even got myself some printable transfer sheets, so ive been working on the decals for that. Though while its gone onto all the other models nice and smoothly the squad leader seems to struggle. I even hacked off the shoulderpad and replaced it and it just seems his luck with transers is non exsistant. And ive also been playing around with pigment dust. Which has been worth using.

Anyway, the real reason for my post. My Iron Hawks captain.

After the comments about mould lines, i tried to be as carful as i could, though looking at these pictures i can see some on the gun arm.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/ilivefordeath/08032009006.jpg

I didnt want the normal space marine look of gold plateing and lots of fancy design work on his armour because i dont feel it fits with the covert style of warfare.

Instead I wanted lots of equipment, and alot of observation equipment. I figure these guys would be operating far more independatly then alot of space marines, they have no heavy armoured tanks and therefore no "command veichles". I figured he should have some more substantial communication equipment (so he got the aerial) . When hes done he will also be getting a servo skull to give him even more ways to monitor the battlefield, which I might .

His storm bolter is from a dreadnaught, and the thing mounted on the side of it is what ill class as his Auxiliary Grenade Launcher. I originally wanted to mount it on his shoulder (predator style), but as he is going to be equipped with a jump pack, that's not going to happen.

I really wanted him to look beat up and heroic so he didnt look like a slightly better equipped assault marine, so i tried to paint some battle damage onto him, its my first time trying to paint this style of damage but after trial and error im quite happy with the results. Though comments would be helpful.

Always open for comments and suggestions to improve him.

I really like the camo as well. It's subtle, but still visible. Good job on that as it's easy to get some schemes blending so much that you lose the figure...which is what camo is "supposed" to do, it just doesn't translate to toy soldiers very well sometimes.

Ah, the return of camo marines! Great idea.

I like the effect the camo has, my only complaint would be the size of the pattern. It looks good and you have executed it well, the blocks just seem rather large. Maybe add some "choclate chips" to break up the size. But, that is all a matter of personal taste.

I love the addition of the antenna on the marine. I may have to steal that for my wolf scouts :D

Looking forward to seeing more.

Better days,

I was tempted to make the cammo smaller but as honda said, you can lose the model in the cammo, this simple scheme did the job best without looking too fussy. Honda said it best, and I agree.

I did a few tests and it really didnt look very nice, also why i went with grey and white urban. Though now ive had some practice I might attempt a few models from the other company's, with green forest cammo, and desert browns.

Okay I bit the bullet, I was going to procrastinate and leave the base and jump pack for another day but I decided it should be finished now so I can go work on my thunder hawk. So heres final pics, the wash is even still wet in places.

I missed the jets when I took the picture but I dry brushed under the jump pack jets to add burn marks, but I dont feel they are majour enough to post any more pics.

I think he looks a bit more impressive now he has his jump pack on.

Next projects in line: thunderhawk, scouts, devastators, command squad.

Okay ill probably get shot by the first sisters of battle player to come though here, but this is the nose art I plan to have on my thunderhawk. Its meant to be a bit of a joke as much as anything so dont take it too seriously. Its my hommage to WWII bombers of old.

That sir, is positively awesome.

I would think it would have to be a relatively lenient chapter, to permit sexually suggestive artwork… especially of a SoB. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still smiling as I type this. It’s pretty fantastic.

That said, I am certain any number of Renegades or CSM would plaster that over every available vehicle surface.

Well done, in my opinion.

I kinda picture these guys like the colenal marines in Aliens. Tough as nails, but rowdy, but theres no doubt that when they are sent in they get down to buisness and they get the job done.

I kinda feel like they should be a chapter that has been officaly disbanded according to imperial records, thought to have been beyond recoverable losses, but instead of being merged with another chapter they have instead been forgotten perhaps due to an oversight or some other reason. They are still loyal to the emperor but their methods are less then codex, being left independant for a long time with no experianced commanding officer (all but 8th and 10th company were wiped out leaving raw recruits and assault squads to escape) will allow a lax command structure, and were an Inquisitor to take a look at imperial records they probably would find a chapter of loyalist marines knocking at their door.

But like alot of things in 40k, the imperium dosnt know what its left hand is doing from its right.

Okay i need honest to god opinions guys. This is just the basic paint scheme and im not sticking turrets and cannons and landing gear on untill after ive finished the basic paint work.

(btw some advice on where to get turrets and sponsons I cant find any on bits sites and i dont want to shell out for 2 preditor kits and 2 razorback if i can help it, though if i do i guess i will add them to my inquisition as rhinos.)

This is my first experiance painting with an airbrush, so its been a learning curve, one that i still have much to learn. How people make works of art with them is beyond me but this is as good as I can muster for now. I have perhaps gone a little overboard on the black scorch marks but I figured after re-entry this thing would be pretty badly scorched.

Okay big update today, not only have I assembled all my devistators and scouts I also went out and got myself a command squad. I wont post pics of the scouts as you all know what they look and at the moment I dont see any point in converting any of them as they suit my army fine as is.

They are still very rough, im trying to glue my army together first then ill clean them up from mould lines and green stuff, then ofcourse paint them up.

BUUUUUT...

Here is my 10 man devastator squad, split into 2 combat squads. I cant decide if I should have the to las in one squad and two plas in the other or to split them up. Afterall it cripples my anti tank ability if they get blown apart, and allows them to target independatly, but it also leaves them less dedicated to taking down tanks. Advice would be good anyway heres the pics.
