uwowrestler
Hey everyone, Been a while, but life gets in the way sometimes. Anyway I've been working on a drop pod for the last couple days. It's my first pod and to be honest, I didn't like the original model's doors. I just could not understand for the life of me why they had to be so damn huge and fall out like that. I mean they take up ridiculous amounts of space and in my experiences due to the rules, they never quite land exactly where they'd be most useful. This lead me to experiment with a clam-shell style door. The significantly smaller footprint of the model just begs you to drop this thing right into a hole in a Guard army's lines. lol Anyway, not much of a conversion. I merely sliced the doors in two and filled holes with green stuff. As for the support struts, I cut out sections for aesthetic purposes. I've ordered some nylon hinges for the top doors. Hopefully they'll arrive soon enough so I can attach and then prime. As for the interior, I left it bare because I'd like to build some boxes and then make some whirlwind launchers out of them a la the Forgeword model. These boxes would be removeable. I'll be attempting to use the slots to attach them. This then gives me a drop pod that I can use for troops or heavy support as the game or my mood dictates. So far, I'm pleased given the fact that this is my first major conversion. I'll be making any other drop pods I purchase in its image for sure. Hopefully refining over time. I'll post more pictures as I progress. http://img410.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01599dp1.jpg http://img410.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01600qo7.jpg http://img259.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01601vl4.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160824-marine-drop-pod-conversion/ Share on other sites
jester_prince
I actually prefer this! The bottom doors become steps that lead somewhere. It looks great id like to see the finished product. And its far more practical to have on the table top. Lestat
To me that just screams Chaos Dreadclaw - but upside down! Pretty nice conversion! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160824-marine-drop-pod-conversion/#findComment-1887216 Share on other sites
sgtNACHO
I wouldn't want to enter orbit at high speeds on fire without thw whole door inbetween me and the billion degree atmosphere outside. Other then that look cool ;) Not very practical from a realistic stand point though. Edit: And I just read your whole post and looked at all the pics and realized your having the whole door. I was kinda scared ooking at that ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160824-marine-drop-pod-conversion/#findComment-1887253 Share on other sites
Montuhotep
This looks to be very interesting indeed - a nice idea and one I'll be watching very closely. uwowrestler
Thanks! I appreciate the comments. And yes, the entire door will be there. Just a different configuration for opening. Making it nice and small to get into tight spaces to wreak havoc lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160824-marine-drop-pod-conversion/#findComment-1887302 Share on other sites
Honda
I agree this is a very clever idea. So, I'm guessing that the rest of the "petal" will fold under the steps, thus preserving the integrity of the capsule for re-entry? The more I think about it, the better I like it. Bravo! NemFX
They are designed for atmospheric entry and surviving anti-aircraft fire. .. The bulkyness sure seems more reasonable now, no? Ironblood
while i cant find anything wrong with it per say, something about it jsut doesnt seem right, like taking a landraider and making is skinnier so it can fit inbetween buildings or something. the cutting and greenstuff looks good so far tho. Alys Dwr
Rules wise - i kind of feel the same way as Ironblood. Like sticking a dread on a 40mm base... 40k world wise - if i was a marine i'd hate to have to wait for hydraulics etc to open the top half of the door, i'd be sitting vulnerable in a box for too long. I guess the doors open the original way so that explosive bolts and gravity cause them to open in a dramatic instant. Model wise - I think the conversion is great so far and commend your ingenuity, i will keep an eye out for the finished product. :P Al Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160824-marine-drop-pod-conversion/#findComment-1887740 Share on other sites
uwowrestler
Forgive me for my ignorance, but I've only been playing and painting since December of 2008. I'm just cocky and ambitious (I now have 100% of my army painted and it's company sized). I do acknowledge that there could be some issues in terms of rules. It seems that I've come right out of left field with this and discovered a strange and potentially cheap loophole. I do however beg that you recognize that I am making a sacrifice building a drop pod like this. Namely, denial of territory and creating an obstacle. Using the doors of the original drop pod, you can literally force enemies to have to travel around it and take multiple turns to get to you. If you use multiple drop pods (as shown in the link below thanks to a buddy of mine who donated two proper drop pods), you can practically deny a flank in terms of movement: http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01606fe2.jpg From a tactical standpoint, I think you'll agree that this may offset some of the potential advantages. Anyway, as you can see, the drop pod is completed and painted. The hinges arrived last night. Unfortunately sacrifices had to be made. You'll notice in the pictures following that there are posts holding the doors up. The hinges turned out to not be tight enough to support the weight of the doors. Oh well, such is life. I still believe it turned out well regardless. I love the painting and scorched look I managed to give the struts. Oh and yes, the exterior of the bottom doors are indeed painted and the pattern does follow. I suppose I should have taken a picture of that. Oh well, next time. For my next pod, I'm going to a home improvement store to find ultra tight hinges though. Those doors on this one do close flush with the bottom doors but the posts are glued because it gets deployed opened anyway. Personally, I think I'll get more annoyed glances from having a camo-painted vehicle in a marine army. lol I've included a variety of pictures, including one as a comparison to an unmodified pod for footprint. Now, it's time to work out how to build some boxes for whirlwind launchers ;) Thanks again for all your support and comments. Any others are more than welcome. I intend to build other improvements over time. And thanks to my good friend Jason for letting me photograph his two "pure" pods. http://img410.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01603wg7.jpg http://img5.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01604fe4.jpg http://img5.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01605np7.jpg http://img413.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01602bo3.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160824-marine-drop-pod-conversion/#findComment-1888635 Share on other sites
