Night Lords Cult Troops

Just curious if anyone can think of a good fluff rationalization for having cult troops in a night lords army, albeit painted in night lords colors. I'm having trouble with it, personally, and figured I'd ask before comitting an atrocity of fluff.

I can think of 2 rationales...

1.) Centuries of spreading fear an panic in your own particular way can do strange things to ones mind... Night Lords are not meant to worship any of the Gods per se, but one can imagine that there are those who become more and more obsessed with certain aspects of the Gods personae.... Over time a squad may have come to find that they were able to spread more fear with carnage/mutation/plague/torture than any other means at their disposal. Over time this became a gateway to the insidious whispering of the warp and true cult status. Bear in mind these are Night Lord CULT troops, not Emp Children or World Eaters in night lord colours, or in a night lord army.

2.) The Squad over time has become more and more adept in the ways of war. They have developed a certain style which they favour... whether it be artistically slicing and dicing their way through the enemy, causing as much wanton destruction as possible or so on. They do not worship any gods, but such is their skill/blood thirstyness/ sheer bloody mindedness or whatever, that their stats will be most closely reflected by the cult troops. This is a "Counts as" rationale rather than a fluff explanation.

The other explanation as Legatus says is to have a warband of the original legion troop (so World Eater beserker, not a Night Lord khornate cult trooper) in their original legion colours join your army

Hope it helps

A means to an end. Almost all Nightlord fluff has The Legion being very pragmatic. They would simply be a tool, to be cast away when their task is done. Also, if you'll remember the little short story at the beginning of the Ultramarines Omnibus, we get a look at Night Lords at least using traitor Guard forces. There's no real inclusion for the traitors, but the Nightlords certainly used them as a buffer against the Loyalist forces. If they have used traitor Guards, they've certainly used cultists.

Now, if by cultists, you're referring to Berserkers, Plague Marines, Noise Marines, and Thousand Sons, I do feel there is room for this. We see at the end of Lord of The Night that there are at least warbands who are willing to make pacts with Chaos, in the case of Acerbus Krieg. There's also mention of another former Nightlord now daemon prince in the BBB. If Nightlords can have daemon princes, then why can't they have the various cultist marines?

Honestly I think cult troops are pretty much anathema to the philosophy of the Night Lords which in the last codex was explained as hating faith and piety in all of its forms and hating faithful chaos brethren almost as much as they hate Imperials. Sure they might make pacts to further their own ends but a cult marine is not making a pact, they are giving themselves completely and totally over to the will of their god to the point that their very body becomes a vessel for that god's aims.

There is nothing quid pro quo about this, it is bondage and a bondage that Night Lords detest and abhor. Honestly I think the counts as solution of "shock troops" being berzerkers or some kind of chemical weapon equipped troops being plague marines (like the desolators from Red Alert 2 if anyone has ever played that) is the best solution if you really want cult troops.

Don't forget that Zho, who remained totally faithful to Konrad Curze's wil , saw Kreig as being the epitome of corrupttion and hated him. That, and when he realized Chaos had gotten to him he went into a bit of self-loathing.

Well, the main reason I want night lords cult troops is so I can convert and paint cult troops in the night lords colors, with some variation of course. Like purple lightning bolts for the noise marines, red ones and Arx helms for the 'zerkers, and so forth. I guess it may be better to go with "Hey, that looks cool!" and not even bother trying to make up coherent fluff?

Oh, indeed. I was using Krieg as an example that some Night Lords, regardless of what we've been told Kurze wanted, have sold their souls. I think, especially in the case of Lord of The Night, that's there's enough fluff to argue both sides of The Night Lords. Bands of roving, raving psychos, and, bands of toughened, frightening veterans.
