FAQ: Painting Dark Angels

Hiya!

Whats the best way to paint DAs? (From experience). Like what do you use to highlight DAs, Im using Snot Green and even Goblin Green and I think it's a bit too bright. A bit cautious to mix paints as it'll be too thick. I want my Angels to be really dark and like menancing, maybe I'm just having an artists block. Apologies for the n00bie Q, I'm just a little frustrated. :P

A simple and quick way is to base in Chaos Black, Paint the whole thing in DA green, Then use a thracka green wash mixed with a bit of black. Then I mixed a DA green with a tad of goblin green to brighten up the areas I wanted brighter and then to highlight I mixed DA green with scorpion green. You can adjust brightness by adding more or less scorpion green. I personally like a bit brighter highlight. Shoulder pads and stuff as normal.gallery_42456_3138_14447.jpggallery_42456_3138_174581.jpg

This is the method I use. It's fast and dirty.

First a black undercoat. The base is drybrushed with raw umber, and the metallic joints etc of the armour with boltgun metal, no need to worry too much about neatness:

Next, the eyes are picked out - no need to worry about being neat. Scab red, with a vallejo flat red caustic and skull white dot:

Then the armour panels are neatly painted with DA green and a highlight line (no blending yet) with snot green. The next step will be to blend this in using a 50-50 mid tone. Badab black washes here help to tidy up the rough drybrush work.

Doing the whole squad gets a bit boring, but helps production line things out. This whole 10 man squad was done in around 8 hours total, over a couple of nights.

Step - 4 the blending done - this is a glaze technique, coupled with touching up by applying either DA green or snot green to tidy up.

Finished - Gold done in vallejo bronze/ old gold, simple drybrush job (with a couple of brown and black washes in there) on the bolter and freehand insignia. The base is finished by adding yellow ochre and titanium white in stages to the raw umber and drybrushing, then some dabs of static grass.

I prime my angels in black then do a basecoat of orkhide shade. From there I use dark angels green/snot green/scorpion green and follow with a veryfine highlight of skull white. If you make sure to leave the bands of darker paint bold and wide and the lighter ones super thin your good as gold. I also found that mine tend to look darker due to the fact that I paint only the trim of my shoulderpads DA green and leave the rest black. I also use silver metallics for all of the iconography as opposed to the more common gold I think that lends to a darker overall miniature. And never forget that brightness also relitave! ( if your basing is brighter, your marines should appear darker!)
If you want really Dark Angles use a pre-heresy style for the paint. after priming it white, Wash the model with a dark green wash or wateredDA green, wherever there isn't green, paint it black or a black and green mix, highlight as you like.
