Kitbashing with other model lines

Howdy wolves. First post here. Forgive me if it proves my search-fu is weak.

I've only been in the hobby for about a year, and Space Wolves is my second army that I started to try to find some more painting and modeling challenges (I started with Tyranids, which I love playing, but they're pretty forgiving if your painting and greenstuffing skills aren't much). I don't much care for the regular Venerable dread kit as a Space Wolves dread, so I'm thinking about ways to make venerable-up a basic Dread kit.

One thing I can't find any examples of folks trying is using parts from other games. I see lots of folks doing cool greenstuff or Forgeworld conversions, which are great. I got a little inspired when I looked at some Warmachine models though. Has anybody ever tried using parts from a Warmachine kit for a DCCW? Those look like pretty big robots... I haven't really looked at the kits in depth though, so I'm curious if anybody's tried it or measured it out or anything. Do Warmachine scenes in your local game stores have spare weapons options laying around? I don't even know what those kits include, honestly... I'm just looking at photos of the models online and I can't find any size comparisons or anything, so I thought I'd ask.

Welcome to the Fang, may your battles be great and many. Ale's in the corner next to the orca and ice fiend, help yourself, just make sure to bring me back some. :D

As for your question, I've never done it, but Khador Warjacks seem pretty interesting. If I ever did convert one, I'd probably take the massive one... ah what's his name... the real big Character Warjack for an Ironclad. But yeah, Spriggens and the Kodiaks, and all the other Khador Warjacks would work pretty well for Wolves.

I'm a great scavenger of other model lines when it comes to conversions. There are alot of nice axes and other models out there. One of my Wolfpriests is acompanied by two valkyries made from the Viking Warmaiden model from reaper and another nice model i found somewhere ( both count as fenriswolves). I also use some Wolf models as fenriswolves because the gw ones are really, really ugly.

I don't like the style of warmachine models, so i never used one of those.

Warmachine is sub-par for dreadnaught parts. Three of my previous roommates played the game. You could get a good seismic hammer off the cyran line.... heavy flamers from the white and red religious nuts.... and thats about it.

Mostly this is because the majority of warjacks are smaller than your GW dreads by anywhere from 20-80% overall. Their men are skinnier and more in proportion to real humans too *GW tends towards large heads Ive noticed* so alot of the bits dont work well their.

Reaper is so far the best cross kit bash Ive seen. Funny thing is all the reaper-fans Ive met, especially the western montana outrider, are incredibly anti-gw. Going so far as to try and ban GW models from 28mm painting contests.
