Night Lords: original sources

I stumble across the author Joseph Conrad

Who it appear alot of the Night Lords' ideas came from.

I always liked the way Games Workshop drew from these obscure sources.

Has anyone read any of his work, all I have is Wiki-knowledge

In the novel Heart of Darkness (on which Apocalypse now is based), we have the character of Kurts.

A man who has become a god like leader of a group of natives in the Congo,

he commits brutal raids against rivals, and adorns his hut with heads,

he wishes to "civilise" the natives, but at the end of a pamphlet written by him, he has scrawled "exterminate the brutes"

Kurtz dies with the last words "the horror, the horror" (I can't remember what Konrad Curze's last words were)

the novel uses darkness as a motif, and contains discussions on

-The Hypocrisy of Imperialism,

-Madness as a Result of Imperialism and the

-The Absurdity of Evil

and the novel Nostromo:

the character of Nostramo,

doing what he thinks is right and best for his employer, leads him to feel slighted and used

in a world were everybody is corruptible, he becomes consumed by resentment, which leads to his corruption and ultimate destruction,

he is shot by the father of his fiancée, when mistaken for a trespassers.

thought you Night Lords might find it interesting.

I allways thought the Night Lords names were inspired by the movie, not the novel, but seeing the Nostromo connection, maybe it was indeed the novel.

However, one part is definitely taken from the movie. The assassin that finally killed Konrad Curze was called M'Shen. Take another look at the movie's cast list. ;)

I couldn't remember her name, but yeah that would come from the movie... and the movie from the book,

i'm sure there are plenty more references hidden in the fluff.

Yep, M'sheen is certainly a reference to the movie, and the movie is most certainly based off the book. And, if memory serves correctly, M'sheen and her ship are actually allowed through the space surronding Tagulsa, which, for me, conjures images of Martin Sheen's character approaching the ruins in Apocalypse Now. Rather bone chilling to imagine all those desperate Astartes watching the assassin as she passes right under their noses.
Joseph Conrad isn't really "obscure" not only is he considered one of the more noteworthy "British" (he was actually eastern European by birth) authors of the turn of the last century, but his books have inspired not only Apocalypse Now and GW, but also the Aliens series as the ship from the first movie was called "Nostromo" the escape shuttle was called "Narcissus" taken from Children of the Sea (originally published under a more offensive name, look it up), and the ship from the second movie was was called "Sulaco" which is a town from the novel Nostromo.

Take it from this gentleman, who seems to know his Conrad.

The Night Lords fluff is indeed very closely based on - one might say blatantly, if lovingly, stolen from - the works of Joseph Conrad, in particular Heart of Darkness.

But it's good of you to post this for those who don't have a grounding in British literature.

Yes, we Night Lord fans have known about this for a while. the Night Lords also draw inspiration from Batman also.

The only problem I've ever had was modelling capes to look like bat wings. My mates pointed out the model was 'Batman' in disguise. They wouldn't stop taking the mick' until I named my Fallen character with a french name...
