Shadowthrone
Hey there my furry friends. I recently picked up WH40k again with a few friends and I could use some advice on how to expand my space wolves army. So far I've got a WGBL, a (Venerable) Dreadnought, 5 Wolf Guard Termies, 2 10-man Grey Hunters squads, 4 Wolf Scouts, a Rhino and a Whirlwind. I'll be facing Orks and Chaos mainly, so are there any good units I could get against those armies? And what would be a good army list of about 750-1000 points against these armies respectively? I hope you guys can help me out a bit, I can't wait to lead my wolves into battle again! OnlyInDeath
Welcome to the Fang young pup! Please be sure to read the forum rules and the FAQ at the top of the page (as I'm sure Max will post shortly with links) The FAQ and also the SW army lists will give you some very good ideas on what to aim for with your army. There are pages and pages of both theorized and tried and tested army lists to browze over, as well as some battle reps to look over. A great resource to be sure. Other than that, try and decide which way you would like to end up going with you army (mech, footsloggy, mech/drop pod, drop pod), and it will become much easier to collect towards that goal. If you will be facing mostly chaos and orks, you are facing two rather polar opposites when it comes to enemies (PA saves with good shooting vs swarms). Because of this, a balanced list is essential for you. You will need weapons and units that can crack the heavy armor of space marines, but you will also need some good anti-swarm units. I think personally you are on a good start with the GH's and Whirlwind. Be sure to kit out the GH's with some good CC capability (ie 2xPW or 1xpw+1xpf) and a good special weapon. One thing I would not do is bring any termies to such a small points game. they would eat up a large chunk of your available points and you would end up being heavily outnumbered. One final piece of advice: you are looking light on the anti-tank. One way to help with this, and also being able to cut swathes of ANY infantry down, would be a vindicator. It has a shorter range, but if you place it right, it will dominate who can move on an entire quarter of a board. Str 10 ordinance (2d6 against armor, pick the highest) means it can cut through armor with ease, and the ap of 2 lets it mow down any troops. Give it a try;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/161442-some-help-with-my-army/#findComment-1895526 Share on other sites
TAVAAR
OnlyinDeath makes some great suggestions. Once you figure out how you would prefer to deploy your force it helps hone in a lot on what you deploy. The Vindicator is great, solid anti armor and swarm (even marine swarm). Your Ven Dread is also very nice as it is very versatile. And the Rhino is a good start to a mechanized force or even a half/half mech force. My suggestion would be get some Blood Claws...lots of them. They may not be as good against certain foes as the GH's but the fact that they get 4 attacks on the charge (3 WITH A POWER FIST!) and they come with frag grenades at 14pts makes them worth it. My Ork friends hate seeing me drop BC's, even against their horde because, as one put it, "your me in number of attacks except with a 3+ save." BC's if used right munch orks, and SM's too as they will force A LOT of 3+ saves. Just don't rely on shooting with them, let your GH take that role. Another idea for slightly bigger games would be to get some Long Fangs, keep them cheap, but take some of them with a WGBL armed with a heavy weapon and a few fenrisian wolves for casualty control (if you can in cover so they get 4+ cover, even on the bark barks). Shadowthrone
Thanks for the replies! I've seen a lot of people mention drop pods here. I've never used them so I'm not too sure about them yet. What would make them preferable over a rhino or just footslogging? Against armies like Orks I can imagine it's best to keep my distance for as long as possible to take advantage of my better firepower. I think I like the idea of a half/half mech/pod army though, to keep my options open against different types of armies. The Vindicator sounds great. I can imagine that together with my Whirlwind I'll have some fun with the ordnance . Blood Claws would be a good addition to my 2 GH squads, though I'd have to put them in the Rhino or a DP to get them to the enemy fast and in one piece :). My WGBL has 2 lightning claws so I could probably stick him in there too. clapper
Drop Pods are AWESOME! I was getting my butt handed to me by some Imperial Guardsmen (tainted with Chaos). They were lobbing HEAVY artillery from the far table edge, even running I couldn't get to cover fast enough. Turn three comes around and my reserves show up. A drop pod lands between a Basilisk and troops guarding an objective. The blood claws hop out and assault the Basilisk with Melta bombs. The Deathwind missile launcher cuts down a healthy chunk of the guard unit. Then next turn the Deathwind takes out the rest of th guard unit and the Blood Claws roll out to assault another Heavy Tank. The gods were on my side with lucky dice, but it worked perfectly. Durfast Spiritwolf
Drop pods are the way we wolves were intended to enter battle. They are like our ancient longships: but rather than striking from the littoral we use the vertical to plant our BCs and Dreads deep in the enemy's formation. I mean really, is there nothing more suiting, and glorious, for the Wolves? Screw riding into battle, or making tactical insertions...we're going to be shot out a FREAKIN SPACE SHIP so that we can land IN battle and starting hacking right away. Beautiful.
