Bulywyf
I was just wondering who uses pack leaders. Also, what units do you tend to put them in (Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, etc.). I have been working on lists for a while now and I just can't seem to be able to justify the points to put these guys in. I love them, I mean with the weapon options, a normal marine sergeant just cannot hope to compare. I wonder if I am making a huge mistake by not making room for at least one or two of these guys in my lists. I have seen numerous posts of people talking about WGPL and I know what the pros are (weapon options, better leadership, more attacks w/power fist, etc.) Anyway, I wanted get some opinions from the wolf brothers out there. Vash113
Blood Claw's, Blood Claw Bikers, Blood Claw Assault Marines, sometimes Grey Hunters, and usually in any packs of Wolf Scout's I take. The extra special cc weapon and the boost to leadership are invaluable. Plastenarius
I usually go ahead and take them in my squads. For a little more points my squad gets an extra leadership and like stated the extra special weapon is nice. If I throw a power-fist in my squads I try to put them on my pack leaders to garner the extra attack with the fist where a normal troop wouldn't get that. Just something I've been trying. -Plast Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/161495-wolf-guard-pack-leaders/#findComment-1896334 Share on other sites
Durfast Spiritwolf
At 1500pts, I don't generally deploy my Wolf Guard either as PLs or as a pack in their own right. I tend to use them in units destined for CC (Blood Claws, Bikers, CC Grey hunters) and usually also when I bring a scout unit. The extra PF attacks that hit on 3+ can be very useful. At 1500pts, I don't generally deploy my Wolf Guard either as PLs or as a pack in their own right. So, you mean to say that you generally don't bring any Wolf guards in battles under 1500 points? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/161495-wolf-guard-pack-leaders/#findComment-1896599 Share on other sites
muzzyman1981
As with the others I try to bring them in....especially with Power Fists. The slightly higher Leadership also helps very much as well. Even if I put an HQ in charge of the pack I will try to fit in a WGPL as it gives me an extra body to work with as well that is outside the limits placed on the pack. Grey Mage
Actually I dont usually bring wolf gaurd, unless its a battle leader with bodygaurd, at 1500pts. If I do theyre always fairly low-key... just a power weapon and a combi-weapon. I cant afford the points for anything more than that to outfit an already pricey squad. I find my Grey Hunters do just fine without them and my bloodclaws are not often significantly better off for their presence. If I do include one its usually with a combimelta so he can blow the transport and the bloodclaws can snack on what they find inside. If Im drop podding grey hunters in however I find a pack leader a very worthwhile investment as every shot counts. Losman
I like to include one outfitted with a S. Hammer and Wolf Tooth Necklace with my blood claws. A WGPL outfitted like that in a large squad means they can win most close combats even against hi weapon skill/hi toughness opponents like daemon princes and avatars. In that sense they are better than having a character in the squad because the character can get taken out before he gets to attack due to both of the described opponents having a higher initiative and being able to be singled out. Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
i use them in every game i play, as i cant see a pack without a main wolf in charge... they dont cost much, give the all important boost to the LD of a unit (good for coutner attack tests and morale tests) and a power fist. in big games i want to give them wolf tooth necklaces and wolf pelts (to help them clean house) wolf lord kieran Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/161495-wolf-guard-pack-leaders/#findComment-1897934 Share on other sites
Bearboy
My only pack leader built up and painted(Newish) goes with my scouts. Combi melta and PF OBELing is tank killing goodness. WG Vrox
Been running one in my DP pack, TDA SS/PF WTN RC and so far have no plans to remove him. Reason for this is upon every wound allocation I feel confident assigning a wound to him until I use up the RC, after that he is just a tough nut to crack. Also I find the extra attack with the PF is essential when hitting 50% of the time. I know I loose out on the pursuing aspect but as I only run one DP in my list, they are there to be a flank block or at the very least a speed bump. WG Vrox. dietrich
I think that Pack Leaders are nearly mandatory now. With the +1 Leadership for Counterattack tests, and the extra attack (and they pay the same points for a PW or PF as a GH), for only 12 points, it's too good to pass up. I've generally been going with a Powerfist, Combi-flamer and Runic Charm. It's a 55 point model, but they add a lot to a unit. To compensate, I've really stripped down the wargear on my GH's (which would frequently have a meltagun, plasma pistol and 2 powerfists). My 'typical' GH unit now has a power weapon and a meltagun or plasma rifle. BCs on foot, if I attach an IC, I don't bother with a PL. If they don't have an attached IC, I throw a PL into the unit. Vash113
Well think about it this way, a 4th Edition SM Veteran Sergeant with Power Fist and nothing else would cost 45 points, I can get a Pack Leader with Bolt Pistol, Power Fist, Wolf Pelt and Wolf Tooth Necklace for 47 points... yea I'm not going to complain about that. GunnarRedsun
i have the models made for a wolf guard for every unit save my wolf scouts (i just never got around to them for some reason), though some times i simply choose to field them as regular models (save the blood claws, where the wolf guard is extra). i also usually field mine with power weapons, though i believe one or 2 of the 20 have power fists. any wolf, i hope it helps Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/161495-wolf-guard-pack-leaders/#findComment-1901076 Share on other sites
