Chaos Renegades: The Relinquished

"For Countless centuries, we have fought. We have served a corpse lord, a false Idol. Now we serve true power. Now we Serve for our Glory. Glory to Chaos!" - Reaver Lord Raviel, Master of the Relinquished.

Colour: Dark Blue Armour with Dull Gold edging.
Warcry: We Are Risen!
Patron God: Worships Tzeentch Primarily.

The Relinquished are a collection of Chaos Renegades, cast out by the Imperium. Formerly, they were the members of a chapter, the Relinquishers, who were founded in the 21st Founding (The Cursed Founding) from the Imperial Fist geneseed. Created to protect a cluster of worlds, known as the Ostien system, they were masters of fortifications and defense, capable of holding a position with the bare minimum of brothers when besieged by far greater numbers.

The history of this chapter spoke little of great campaigns fought by them, choosing their duty to protect the valuable forge system rather than move to engage in needless battles. The chapter did send out task forces to assist and fight, but rarely did they go out in force.

For almost two millenia, the Chapter endured, enjoying a stream of equipment from the forge world, Ostien Tertius, and were able to keep it's numbers up with recruits from Ostien Secundus, when the Chapter's command changed hands to Lord Rapheal Fugen, a marine of notable tenacity and confidence. Determined to draw his chapter out of ignomy and into the annels of history, he prepared a sizeable force to leave the sector on a campaign.

The Taint: Rebirth

"To have believed that the Word Bearers came to destroy us and take our Chapter's legacy was idiocy. We owe our existance to those blessed men. They set us free". - Sorceror Malus Idictern

Midway through the Chapter's preparation for war, a contingent of Word Bearers, a fraction of a Host that had engaged several sub sectors away, engaged the battle fleet. The Traitor Marines boarded the lead Battle Barge, Valour On High, and it's leader, an unknown Champion of Lorgar, challenged the Chapter Master. With the aid of the Raphael's command squad and the Librarian Draness, now Master of the Chapter's Librarium, he overcame the enemy, killing him and all the Word Bearers they fought aboard their battle barges. With the apparent taint of the enemy removed, Raphael had time to look upon his foe and his war gear. A long sword, of ancient and terrible artifice, was the chief weapon used by the traitor. For a mere moment, Raphael was entranced and that moment was all it took. Taking the blade, he held it aloft, admiring it's gleaming surface, before realising too late it's true nature: A Daemon Weapon. In that moment of truth, the blade burned and it molded to his arm, his hand forming a vambrace around it. The Chapter Master was now under the fell sway of Chaos, and had a new agenda.

To War: The Heresy Unseen

"We shall no longer tarry here. We go to the flames! CRY HAVOC, AND LET SLIP THE HOUNDS OF WAR!" - Fourth Company Captain Kelar Nuis, addressing his personal command squad.

Raphael, subconciously renaming himself Raviel, could rely on over a third of the Chapter to turn with him, and was able to sway a good portion of the PDF of Ostien Secundus and some of the Mechanicum to his banner. Determined to leave with as much as he could, he ordered the Mechanicum to sack their temple, to bring any technology they considered instrumental. Raviel knew his Chapter could bring their own technology to the fold of Chaos, and set his forces about stealing the Chapter's Land Speeders, when the Third Company Captain, Seth Karanen, (Now Chapter Master of the Redeemers), challenged him.

Seeing his lord perverted in such a way offended him, and with his Sternguard and Terminator squads, set about demolishing the traitors. Fighting his lord in single combat, he almost bested him, when the foul powers of the Warp saved him. With countless caches of weapons and equipment stolen, the Relinquishers were wounded gravely, losing fifty battle brothers and half their scout company to the enemy, but killing seventy enemies as they fled.

The Chapter's homeworld was greatly wounded, rendering a quarter of it unsuitable for habitation, and several splinter cults of Chaos reside there, living using the mutations of the Warp.

The Renegades are now a mecenary force and have currently three hundred and fifty soldiers, three dreadnoughts, six suits of Tactical Dreadnought Armour and much more equipment, they present a new threat to the Imperium of man, though divisions in the Warband do exist, mostly between the Sorceror, Malus, and the Reaver Lord, Raviel.

Oaths of Blood

"It is my shame that these men turned from us. When we meet again, Raviel, I shall not stay my hand."- Chapter Master Seth Karanen, when his former master was turned from him.

The remaining Relinquishers, only five hundred and twelve brothers, changed their name and colours and became the Redeemers. Devoted to bring about the end of their heretical brothers, they wait in the Ostien system and send out task forces once more, waiting for their lord.

This is my first time doing something like this. It's meant to be a sort of article on my Chaos warband's history. What do you think?

I think its not a bad peice Brother especially for your first one (Tradenark understatement :P ) though I'd suggest the following:

The Relinquished are a collection of Chaos Renegades, cast out by the False Imperium.

I'd change this to just be the Imperium more for the flow. Also I'd suggest fleshing out the encounter with the Word Bearers possibly using a champion of chaos rather than an Apostle as it avoids problems with the Crozius. Did the Word Bearers board them or did they board the Word Bearers ship. Be careful here as a Word Bearers Host is usually the size of a Chapter, I've seen quite a few peices start of well then push suspention of disbeleif a bit too far.

Again I'd suggest fleshing out the civil war on your chapters homeworld and the implications of it. Did they destroy the world? Are the loyal sections of the chapter activly hunting them to this day?

You've got a solid concept here and I do rather like you colour scheme. I'm sorry if I come across hashly, I didnt mean to an am just trying to be constructive.

Also good luck with your army and I look foward to seeing some pics ;)

Don't worry. I take all people's suggestions with a pinch of salt. I haven't actually finished the article yet, and I'm going to add more on later. I'll probably change the stuff about the Word Bearers a bit, but I kind of meant it to be a splinter fleet, perhaps the remnants of a former host.

Thanks though for the suggestions.

Politics: Purity above all!

The Relinquished have had multiple disagreements, never fully developing into "civil war" amongst them, The constant threat of betrayal causing each of the authority figures to divide. But they did this not only out hatred for each other, but out of preference.

Lord Raviel was opposed to mutations in the remaining renegades, whilst Malus saw the mutations as powerful additions to their wargear, and a chance to expand their knowledge through experimentation, whilst Kelar remained silent, siding with neither, but seeming to see both the need for pure flesh and mutations. Thus the Three Echelons of Purity were born: Flesh, Mind and Balance.

"Purity of Flesh" was a collection of marines opposed to mutations, attempting to keep their flesh "pure" from taint, and made up of those entirely loyal to Raviel. Tzeentch was not without a sense of Irony, bestowing broad wings upon him and possessing their only working Land Raider. They worship Chaos as a Pantheon, Undivided, but they often offer their services to Tzeentch.

"Purity of Mind" were led by Malus, the Sorceror Lord, and were marines who cared not for the mutations aflicting them. They were concerned, primarily, with gathering knowledge of Chaos, it's gods and the inhabitants of the warp, and were determined to turn these on their enemies. And the mutations were needed to gather knowledge. They employ possessed in small numbers, and keep two of their Dreadnoughts. They are all loyal to Malus.

"Purity of Balance" were led by Kelar Nius, former Captian of Fourth Company. These marines took parts of both the other echelons, using knowledge and mutations, but balancing the high number of possessed with a high number of Chosen elites. Worships both Tzeentch and the Pantheon. These are made up of Marines who are loyal to Kelar.

"Flesh" and "Mind" keep away from each other, joining forces against a great foe if necessary, whilst "Balance" maintains links to both echelons, acting as a liason between the two.

"Mind" is situated on a Daemon world in the Eye, Nirvus, and the world is thick with labyrinths and laboratories. It is rumoured they are often visited by Fabius Bile, who experiments upon them. Malus also seems to maintain ties to Ahriman of the Thousand Sons, both of them being powerful Psykers.

"Flesh" remains out of the Eye, travelling in their stolen Battle Ships, and razing worlds. Each ship remains largely the same as the day they stole them, save for improved weapon systems, shields and an improved Geller field. Raviel has been rumoured to be in contact with the Despoiler, and has pledged multiple forces to the Cadian Gate.

"Balance" is rumoured to hold a small world, abandoned by it's former masters. They have enough ships to travel, but they choose to remain still, perhaps planning something. They refrain from dealing with other Chaos Legions.

The marines who were not loyal to any of the three lords, or shared any convictions wandered, becoming mecenaries, but sometimes forming their own warband. Some have developed their own Echelons as well, but they are not as infamous as the primary three.

Conflict Everlasting

Soon to be completed.

Very nice and quite well thought out. I'm impressed that you managed to name everyone!

I like the tension you've built into your warband and from your layout it appears that the Sorceror is placing himself in a position to strike at his Lord. How are you planning to set up the Third Echelion - Purity of Balance?

I'm looking forward to reading more!
