Battle Report, 1850 pts, 2v2

Forkunnr Stormsinger licked his fangs in feral anticipation of the battle to come. His attendant Grey Hunters were on the edge, each of them could sense truly bizarre circumstances about the skirmish to come. As the battle tanks halted in a staggered line in front of them, Forkunnr's psychic senses tingled, then screamed with a shrieking warp-cry as meters away from the tanks the very ground and sky melded into a baleful warp portal. The fallen Black Templars had called their new allies into battle, and the Space Wolves would have to bear the brunt of the daemonic assault.

Okay guys. This is my first battle report, and it's really quite sketchy because of how late the game ran (10 PM-4 AM). I also don't remember much of my ally's movements for the same reason.

Here is the list I used. Exactly 1850 points.

HQ:

- Wolf Lord (398)

- Wolf Priest (141) (Attatched to Blood Claws)

- Venerable Dreadnought (171)

Elites:

- Wolf Guard (bodyguard to Wolf Lord) (271)

- Rune Priest (115) (Attatched to Grey Hunters)

Troops:

- Grey Hunters x 10 (240)

- Blood Claws x 10 (170)

Heavy Support:

- Land Raider (260)

- Predator Annihilator (140)

- Leman Russ Exterminator (214)

(Right now I want to comment on my list. It sucked. I know what's wrong with it at the moment, but I am not dealing with a truly competitive group so it's not terribly concerning. I definitely need more GH and BC, though. Next game I believe I will leave the Russ out, take another squad of BC's and maybe a Whirly or speeder or something.)

In this game I ended up fighting a Black Templars army teamed with a pure daemon army, and I was allied with Eldar. Due to my terrible memory caused by the late hours, I can only really state all the combat I was involved in. Sorry guys.

So, at 10:00 PM, we were all organized and ready to go. Crack the beers and shout the jeers!

Game type: Corner point capture

Starting points: (Daemons exempt) table corners.

Terrain: Flat with 4 ruined buildings and crashed shuttle.

Play order: Eldar, Daemons, Space Wolves, Black Templars.

Turn 1:

When the game first started, I had a clear sight to the Templars across open ground. The Chaos Gods said NO to that, as a Blood Thirster, a Daemon Prince and a squad of Plaguebearers and one of Bloodletters appeared about four to six inches inches from my armor line.

I deployed my forces in a box formation, with my Land Raider, Predator and Ven Dread holding a foot-long line from the table edge facing the Templars. With my Wolf lord and his guard in the Land Raider, my infantry and Leman Russ rolled in behind the armor line. The Land Raider cruised forwars two inches, opened its hatches and my Wolf Lord and retinue stormed out. The Raider then opened up its lascannons and its Hunter Killer across the field at a Black Templars' Vindicator and smoked it with a penetrating hit. My Predator then opened up with its pintle stormie, lascannons and a heavy bolter on the Daemon prince, but caused no damage. My Dreadnought and Exterminator targeted the Bloodletters with a frag missile and two pairs of autocannons, but caused no damage. In the end, my Wolf Lord and his terminator buddies charged the closest daemon prince and managed two wounds on it, with the Lord taking one wound in combat.

Turn 2:

The Blood Thirster charged my Land Raider, and apparently earned the favor of Tzeentch for a second as he sheared the Raider's hull open and caused it to explode. With the Land Raider vaporized, the Blood claws moved up to fill the gap. Nearby, the Exterminator, Predator and Dreadnought all fired upon the Plaguebearers with only one casualty inflicted. The Wolf Lord and Terminators continued their fight with the Daemon Prince and wounded the dreadful creature two more times, banishing it back to the warp, paying for the victory with two lost Terminators.

Turn 3:

The second half of the Daemon army appeared, consisting of 4 Furies, 5 Seekers, 8 Bloodcrushers, 20 daemonettes and another Daemon Prince (Or the same one?). At this point, the Eldar had brought their lines to the Space Wolves flank and had fired into the existing daemons, so the reinforcements were compelled to assault them.

The Dreadnought moved forward, firing at the nearest squad of Daemonettes, but doing no damage. At the same time, the Leman Russ moved from behind the Predator, showing its side to the enemy as it fired its main cannons at the Bloodcrushers. The Grey hunters added supporting fire in the way of bolters and a plasma pistol, but only knocked off one daemon. The Wolf lord, feeling triumphant (or foolish) assaulted the new daemon prince with his two remaining Wolf Guard, but fate claimed all three and the Prince emerged victorious with no wounds.

Turn 4:

The Bloodthirster gazed upon the Exterminator and made up his mind. Boom went the pretty Exterminator.

Wasting no time, the Blood Claws and Wolf Priest surged toward the Daemon Prince, intent on exacting revenge. My Dreadnought was now immobilized from a debilitating rending hit from a mob of Furies and Daemonettes. The Predator's cannons struck clear through all the twisting close combat and immobilized the distant Templar Rhino, while the Grey Hunters fired on the Blood Thirster, managing a single wound. The Priest and Blood Claws met with the Daemon Prince, who was unable to withstand the flurry of chainswords and axes around him and was banished back to the warp. The Grey Hunters and Rune Priest, perhaps inspired by the young Blood Claws, assaulted the nearby Bloodthirster and brought their united might to bear on the Blood Thirster, felling the terrible beast of Khorne with a two-wound finish, but the thirster's re-emergence into the warp violently washed the earth and sucked the Blood Claws into the nether.

Turn 5:

With the greater Daemons all felled by the Space Wolves, the Eldar pushed into the swirling sortie and had destroyed 10 Daemonettes and all of the furies, and the firing lines to the Templars were opened again. Great persistence was shown by the daemons, as all but one Bloodletter and all but one plaguebearer had been banished back to the warp by the eldritch powers of the Eldar witches.

[Edit: Report completed!]

The Venerable dreadnought stubbornly refused to fall and did not lack in making his presence felt. The Furies hovering about it were roughly (and literally) smacked around by the Dread's autocannon arm, the remaining three suffering damage from the angered Dreadnought that forced them out of the mortal plane. As the Grey Hunters moved to protect the ancient Dreadnought, The Predator fired on a near squad of Templar assault troops, incurring the wrath of a vicious assault with meltabombs. The Predator suffered four penetrating hits and promptly exploded, taking all but three assault troops with it. The Grey Hunters siezed the opportunity to charge the remaining three and mercilessly felled the corrupted brethren.

Turn 6:

With few daemons remaining on the field of battle, the Black Templars now made their presence felt after holding back for most of the game. A Templar Land Raider Crusader raked the lines of the Eldar, but the return fire from Wraithlord-mounted Brightlances and a Star Cannon did nothing to the great machine. On the other side of the ruins, a squad of Sword Brethren moved nearer to the remaining Space Wolves. The Grey Hunters moved to form a vanguard for the venerable Dreadnought, and were able to bring their guns in range of the Sword Brethren. The corrupted zealots felt the wrath of holy bolter, plasma and melta, and were forced into retreating four inches.

Turn 7. (This was the last turn, as it was now 3:30 AM. Distractions caused by drinking and a television didn't help shorten the game)

Steeling themselves, the remaining Sword Brethren made a suicidal charge into the Grey Hunters. The veteran Wolves met the assaulting three marines with the might of a powerfist, power sword and several chainswords against the elite Templars. The ancient Dreadnought, having no other available targets, attempted to crack the hull of the immobilized Templar rhino, but the Krak missile and linked Autocannons went wide.

(Thus here the game ends. Units left on the field for my side: Space Wolves Grey Hunters with Rune Priest and one immobilized but angry Venerable Dreadnought. The Eldar had only their seer council and bits and pieces of a Guardian squad remaining. The Demons left on the field consisted of 3 Bloodcrushers, a Daemonette and a Bloodletter. The Black Templars still had a Terminator squad, a chaplain and an immobilized Land Raider. Had we kept going, I have little doubt that we would probably have lost to the Templars.)

At the moment I'm just rather amazed at how awful your shooting was and how extremely well your close combats were

Yeah. The dice gods did not favor my shooting phases. I blame it on a sweaty hand, as it was quite warm in the apartment. I owe my success in CC to the toughness and number of attacks of the Rune Priest, Wolf Priest and Wolf Lord.

Aww and it was just getting good, can't wait to see how the game ended. ^_^

EDIT: Also why weren't you fighting alongside the Templars?

Well, the guy that brought me to the group wanted me on his team, so that meant Eldar + Space Wolves against Black Templars + Daemons. These guys play for the fun and not for anything else.

POST GAME REPORT:

I learned a lot from this game for certain. I NEED MORE INFANTRY! I can certainly figure out my revised list. Next time I hope to run some bikes or speeders for a rapid punch. I may also want to scrap the fast attack later on and try dropping. Right now I am in the phase of change, so I can still figure out what works best before adding on any more tanks.

Best unit of the battle:

Grey Hunters with Rune Priest. These chaps accounted for the most kills, and completely cut down two whole squads and the Bloodthirster.

Worst unit of the battle:

Leman Russ Exterminator. This tank got very few hits and fewer kills. For being my favorite tank, maybe I was a bit overconfident with using it, but when I told the guys that I had a Leman Russ, they got scared, thinking they would be facing a battlecannon.

Biggest flop of the battle: Almost all of my shooting phases. Maybe I didn't make adequate oaths to Leman Russ. Who knows.

Well, at least it wasn't the Dark Angels. B) You learn more from a loss than from a win, Brother!

Yes, I learned a lot about my army from this game, although the group was afraid that I would be scared away by it. Nay, I say. I am only incensed to tweak my army now. I've already revamped a squad of Grey Hunters today and tomorrow I will dig out my buried Blood Claws for the same treatment.

Incense smells pretty...

I think you got the slots crossed between the rune priest and the Vendread... or was that an iron priest?

And BTW... daemons cant assault out of DS. Check on that next time eh? After all you might have been tired.

Still thats an impressive CC result. Im glad you found a fun group, they can be hard to come by.

To really comment on your army we'd need to know how you kitted out your guys...

Also, which Land Raider variant did you use? And which upgrades did your vehicles get?

How did your Predator only cost 140? We use the prices from C:SM... And as already stated, your RP is an HQ choice :-)

Better luck next time :tu:

You are right about the Rune Priest. He and the Dread were swapped, with the RP being an HQ and the Dread being an elite. My bad.

If it was anything other than a normal Land Raider, I would have stated such in the list.

It's possible the Predator's points were jinxed by the army builder program we were using, but I have to ask how we are supposed to use the Pred's point cost in C:SM when OUR book clearly states a bare bones Annihilator is 120 points and a Destructor is 100. If I am not mistaken, we are supposed to go by the numbers in our book before we ever look at the vanilla marines codex. If it's any other way than that, then I am giving up Space Wolves.

So, for the people who want to pick my bones, here's a detailed list:

HQ:

- Wolf Lord (398)

- Master-Crafted power sword, wolf pelt, talisman, necklace, bolter, frags

- Wolf Priest (141) (Attatched to Blood Claws)

- Fang of Morkai, Healing potions and balms, wolf pelt, talisman, fenrisian wolf

- Rune Priest (115) (Attatched to Grey Hunters)

- Wolf tail talisman, frost axe, plasma pistol

Elites:

- Wolf Guard (bodyguard to Wolf Lord) (271)

- 4x Terminator armor, 4x runic charm, 3x necklace, assault cannon, heavy flamer, power sword, 2x chain fist, power fist

- Venerable Dreadnought (171)

- searchlight, TL autocannons, missile launcher

Troops:

- Grey Hunters x 10 (240)

- 2x bolt pistol, x8 close combat weapon, frags, 5x bolter, 2x plasma pistol, power fist, power sword, meltagun

- Blood Claws x 10 (170)

- x9 bolt pistol, x8 close combat weapon, frags, flamer, x2 powerfist

Heavy Support:

- Land Raider (260)

- Searchlight, Smoke launchers, TL heavy bolter, x2 TL lascannon, H-K missile

(For some reason, the program gave me Power of the Machine Spirit on this thing, despite us not getting it on any machine.)

- Predator Annihilator (140)

- Searchlight, smoke, pintle storm bolter, TL lascannon, heavy bolter sponsons

- Leman Russ Exterminator (214)

- TL Autocannon, hull heavy bolter, heavy bolter sponsons, dozer blade, pintle-mounted storm bolter, searchlight, smoke launchers

(Next time I gotta pay more attention to my wargear! I noticed that when the Wolf Lord and his friends were fighting with the daemon princes, I forgot about the wolf pelt and necklaces. D'oh!)

Well, at least it wasn't the Dark Angels. :P You learn more from a loss than from a win, Brother!

'

Ahem, I feel so ashamed now. I knew I had a squad of Blood Claws waiting for my attention, but, I found another squad or two of Grey Hunters in there. So now I have 2 Blood Claw packs and 3 Grey Hunter packs. I think I'm set for infantry now. Also buried were four of the old metal Wolf Guard terminators, but I will probably try and sell these, since this makes 14 Terminators in my posession. Along with the terminators came a squad of metal/plastic long fangs that I ditched because of a bad basecoat. They'll be cleaned up and join the other two Long Fang packs in my case.
