Validity of a Rune Priest in small point games

It seems that the smaller the scale, the more tide-turning something like Storm Caller could potentially be (though the 80+ cost is steep).

Whats the skinny on the Rune Priest in general, and specifically his application in smaller lists. I'm new and am working towards an 500-700 point army at the moment.

Honestly, I am a fan of other HQ choices in smaller points games over a rune priest, as the price listed is only for the unit, gear non withstanding. That means you are looking at a 120ish point single model...steep even by SW standards. Plus, stormcaller, while still effective, tends to lead to lots of rules lawyering in games and again, IMO, not worth it in small points games.

Some nice, cheap alternatives would be:

A. wolfpriest. at under 100 pts for a power weapon wielding HQ with an invuln save, it's nice and affordable and survivable.

B. wolf guard battle leader: cheap base cost, and upgradable to become an absolute killing machine even in low points battles. A WTN with either a LC/SS combo, or just a pair of LC's will see you able to down even a carnifex in CC in one round (probably with a little support needed).

C. My personal fav: the HQ Vendread. This is a great way to take care of a 750 pt HQ requirement, and also field some very hard to kill armor in a low points game. Finding a way to wiggle in armor in a lower points game, especially with the cost of SW units, can be hard and this is the perfect alternative.

I'd second OID. Storm Caller isn't that good, especially with the abundance of better cover saves and frag 'nades in games these days.

A Ven Dread will kill more, take more punishment, be generally harder and probably not cost that much more.

Real quick, what's WTN mean?

I'm liking the sound of a WGBL with a pair of LCs, what's a good way to start modeling this? GW sells those terminator lightning claws, but can I put a WGBL in termie armor or will it cost alot.

And for the vendread, should I go for the Autocannon/Claw combo and keep him ranged at first wave?

There's a lot of options for a WGBL, but the best idea is to just build your own. there's several models out there with a pair of LC's, but you can always just use some termie sprues and just have larger than normal arms. It doesnt look bad, and actually makes a model look a bit more brutal.

As far as the vendread, there's a plethora of options open to you. Lots of people swear by the AC/HF build of the old metal one, and I have used it to good effect myself. However, footslogging up the field with this guy isnt a good idea, as you will get shot up pretty quickly. I tend to model my vendreads in one of two ways: ranged and close combat (to be shipped in via drop pod).

My personal fav for a ranged setup is the TLLC/ML combo. This makes your dread a formidable anti-armor platform with BS 5. Other fun builds are things like plasmacannon/ml, auto cannons, etc. Throwing these guys in some area cover and having them blast units from affar will be a good way to put them to use.

For close combat, all my builds revolve around a drop pod with a deathwind missile launcher. The AC/HF is a good setup for this, as is a MM/HF (dropping in a BS 5 model with a multimelta right on top of armor gives you a very good chance of removing some nasty ranged armor right off the bat). If you expand to more points and models, my personal favorite variants are twinlinked heavy flamers/heavy flamer/ccw off hand. This is a NASTY piece to drop onto horde armies (no cover saves!) or the always dependable ironclads.

For 500-700 points, maybe a RP is too much, but in my game this week of 1850 every HQ except for my Rune Priest was canned. My Wolf Lord and his Terminators bit the dust while in CC with a Daemon Prince after killing one just like it, and my Wolf Priest and his Blood Claws were torched by an exploding tank. The Rune Priest and the Grey Hunters were freaking unstoppable and tore up every enemy unit they got to grips with.

I know it was all up to the dice gods, but the toughness and wounds of the Rune Priest are what saved his bacon.

@ LoneSniperSG good job with the rune priest. i just gotta say it.

now, to respond, i always run my ven dread. ALWAYS. it is always in my list, from like 500 to the full great company (i think its like 8 or 9 thou right now...i don't even know any more :)). after that, i take a wolf guard with a frost weapon or wolf priest. but thats me. still...dreads at under a thousand are HARD to kill. most people don't count on em, and don't build for them, at least thats my experience (thats why i field the ven and the iron clad :tu:) hope it helps

Man that's a cruel tease Didacsoy...

Sorry, I didn't mean that. I was trying to say that if you wait for a week (maybe two) you could get a very nice wolf model with dual lightning claws in power armor so you wouldn't have to convert him.

*Spreads hands* I think, personally, that if your not playing 13nth company you shouldnt have a Rune Priest until youve taken a wolf lord, wolf priest, venerable dreadnaught and two WGBL's... IE if your playing 4k. Before that I find the only reason to take him is the chooser of the slain. A 5+ cover save isnt worth the extra points when I could be grabing a tougher HQ with a lord, a cheaper HQ with a priest, or an assault cannon with a battle leader. The plethora of 4+ cover saves in 5th edition combined with the potential problems with stormcaller just mean its not worth it.

i bring the Rune priest for 4 reasons:

1. he has access to a frost weapon

another WS , I5 frost weapon will always help a unit out.

2. he has access to a rune staff.

while only ld9, this alteast lets me attempt being whipped away from combat or preventing whatever psychic hate my opponent has instore for me.

3. he has access to the chooser of the slain

this prevents infiltraters from getting me at a disadvatage, and a good psych out for an opponent rely on this rule.

4. he has storm caller

while not a game winner at first glance, grants 2 awesome things...cover to ven dreads as they charge across the field, or cover to my termies when higher I opponents attack. (like slaanesh terminators, eldar) this ability also hoses other terminator units like grey knights, who have no access to frags (other than LRC...but those are expensive) or cheap swarm troops like lesser daemons.

my order of hqs goes:

wolf lord

ven dread

rune preist

wolf preist

wolf guard battle leader

wolf lord kieran
