Plasma cannon on a dread?

I really like the look of the plasma cannon on a dread but for the same point cost you can get an assault cannon. The plasma cannon has range on the assault cannon but that's about it as the assault cannon can shred infantry or perform an anti-tank role. Is there any reason to favor a plasma cannon over an assault cannon other than 'it looks cool'?

I use a plasma on my venerable dread and with the higher ballistic skill I find that it very seldom scatters enough to not kill something. It has the range and doesnt overheat and the blast template means that you can potentially kill 7+ enemies if they deep strike in range (as more than one squad of vanguard and termies have discovered)

Avoiding "Gets Hot" does make Dreads a good platform for Plasma Cannons.

Assault Cannons are better against heavy armour and most hordes and slightly more accurate.

Plasma Cannons are better against MEQ and Super-heavy Troops like Terminators.

I like that they are the same cost so I can swap from one to the other depending on opponent without chaning my army.

I find it rare for a small blast template to hit more guys than 4 shots. With terminators spread out, you get 1-2 if the blast template is centered on a model, 2-3(maybe) if it deviates, or maybe nothing at all.

I'd rather have 4 shots with a chance to rend personally.

With hordes, the plasma cannon may get more hits... or it might deviate all over creation. I'd bet over the long run the assault cannon is killing more.

Plus, the assault cannon has a chance to take down AV14 tanks, which a plasma cannon can never do.

In terms of performance, the Autocannon will probably be slightly better against vehicles and more lightly-armored infantry (read: anything with a 4+ or worse save). While the plasma cannon has a hard time popping anything tougher than the lightest vehicles (no auto-glances on land raiders every other turn here), it's also stronger against the heaviest infantry and the biggest hordes. So far, it's basically a wash (the twin-autocannon dakka-dread has proven itself to me very, very nicely, reliably getting about two kills per turn against just about everything it shoots at).

Where plasma really shines, in my mind, is the psychological factor. Anyone playing marines or power-armored armies of any variety are really trained to fear plasma of any sort, and more marine players are not very good at spacing their models out. Plasma is just scarier than the autocannon to most sorts of armies (other than heavily mechanized ones, which thankfully I face few of).

I've been chewing on what you all have said and I feel a bit better about equipping the dreads with plasma cannons. I still think the assault cannon is more effective overall but the plasma cannon is going to out perform an assault cannon against some armies. And it looks cooler.
I think a Plasma Cannon makes a perfect match for the Missile Launcher. You can throw out 2 cupcakes against infantry or a a S7 and S8 hit against heavier targets. The extra range over the Assault Cannon means it can be brought to bear quicker.

Exactly as minigun suggested above: I find the plasma to be the best fit with the missile launcher. Since plasma can fill multiple roles (light vehicle, MEQ killer, slightly-overpriced horde killer) it pairs with the missle launcher very well.

Just be extra sure to enforce the deep strike rules upon your opponents--be sure that their minis form that tight circle around the first to land. Then unload with the plasma. Bye bye terminator deep strikes.

Cheers.
