Assault Marine Test models

Hi everyone, I've recently started my new DIY chapter the Storm Claws. After painting a few assault marines in a pretty boring though quite pleasing paint scheme, I saw Metcalfedan's Viva Metallica thread and after no deliberation whatsoever, was swayed into painting up a test model.

Here is the standard paint scheme:

And here is his metallic brother:

I think the metallics give it a real "grim dark" feel.

Curse you Dan! I'm very tempted to repaint my marines in metallics now!

Also, I've got a few new base ideas for the new scheme; the theme is underhive warzone, so dark rubble and dank pools of water are ideas that I have been toying around with. I think it will really help with the bleak dirty look I'm trying to go for. Here's what I have so far:

They need a few more coats of PVA before you'll be able to see the water properly, I installed false bottoms on the bases to get the sunken effect for the water. The picture doesn't really do it justice (he says!) and they're actually a bit darker than they appear in the pic.

All of these are test models for my upcoming army and I hope that you'll all give me lots of tips and ideas as I go along!

Many thanks - Spesh.

Hello again all, just a quick update on how the bases are coming along really. My test marine is now mounted and just needs a few touch ups. (fnar)

The other bases are looking well too I think - I've adapted my underhive theme to include a slight chaos taint :D

Anyways, enough mumbling...

I followed wokkers' advice and added a bit of debris to break up each base a bit. I'm toying with the idea of a few more bits but wouldn't want to clutter them.

I could still use a few painting tips too, I'm not quite up to metcalfedan's level of painting yet and I think that the wash looks a bit patchy in places. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Spesh.

Thoughts anyone?

I thnk you are doing just fine and the results are very impressive. Having experimented with different water type effects, I can speak very favorably on using Futures Floor Finish as a base layer and then applying a layer of GWs Hard Coat.

What I like about these medium are the fact that they take tints and color very well and so you could have a dirty brown water, greenish chemicals, etc. for a little variety.

And I should admit that I needed some convincing on the metallics, but I think yours look great. Please do provide a breakout of how you got the effect. I see some possibilities for future projects.

Cheers,
