Von Richthofen
Fellow B&Cers, I'm a long time Black Templar player who's always wanted to start a Crimson Fists army. Well, with some recent purchases (i.e. the AOBR box and a few discounted NIB squads bought from friends) I've got a nice little fledgling Crimson Fists force. It'll be a while before these guys see paint, as I've committed myself to painting my Tau first (I hear you booing and hissing) since I've had them for years and I'm quite tired of painting marines. However, I wanted to get the army built so I can at least play them. I managed to pick up a spare AOBR commander, and I wanted to convert myself up a "counts-as Kantor", so I've done that. However, I like making my models as useful as possible, so I always want to use him as a standard Captain model to fit him into smaller games. Years back when I was trying to decide what Marine Chapter to play from the 3rd Ed. Marine Codex, the Emperor's Champion and Captain Cortez were the two characters that I thought were the coolest, and I was considering both of their Chapters based on nothing more than their brief fluff blurbs and rules. Obviously, the Champ won out. However, now that I'm doing the Crimson Fists, I think that representing Cortez, newly escaped from the Dark Eldar, sounds like a good idea. Also, this allows me to use this model in 3 different ways: 1) As a standard SM Captain, with a storm bolter and powerfist. 2) A 'special character' of my own devising... basically the same as above but with "Feel no Pain" added in to represent his former "invulnerable" rule. Eternal Warrior or a 3+ save were also options, but I prefer the keeping it toned down a bit. I would basically jack his points cost up by 10 points to represent this, more if I could also use Kantor's Chapter Tactics rules along side him. Obviously, this would be for Apocalypse or friendly games only! 3) As Pedro Kantor. Since his equipment is a match for the Chapter Master, there really isn't any work needing to be done here. Anyways, here is now the model looks today, have a look: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/CortezWIP05.jpg http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/CortezWIP07.jpg http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/CortezWIP06.jpg Obviously, the greenstuff is still a bit sloppy, since I have to let it dry for a while before I can file it smooth. However, I love how the storm bolter looks now... I was a bit disappointed with it until I added the greenstuff. C&C is welcome! Thanks. aNex88
I like him. Only gripe about him is that his head doesn't have enough bling to him if you know what I mean. I feel like his head needs to stand out from the crowd of marines. Commissar Molotov
Cortez is a great character for whom the GW sculptors have always done a disservice! It's good to see you rescuing him from the clutches of the Dark Eldar. I look forward to seeing how you get on with this model. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/162014-aobr-captain-cortezpedro-kantor/#findComment-1903533 Share on other sites
paulson games
Seriously when I first looked at the pic I thought the bolter was a powerglove giving the finger, when I did a what?? double take I realized it was the bolter. Combination of the pic being blurry and tiredness. The conversion looks good. My only suggestion would be to add on a fist icon or maybe the laruels. I got rid of the eagle head-rest thing on AOBR commander as it bothered me on a templar but looks fine on Cantor. What's the bolter drum bit from? teh_perfesser
That's really pretty good. The fist is done really well. I couldn't tell that's a conversion if I didn't know better. The storm bolter is off, due to the two sights--makes it obvious that you smashed two bolters together. Trim them both off, stuff the gap up top and you're good to go. The helmet doesn't seem right at all... it's too much helmet. If you're dead set on that Dev helmet, replace the eagle style iron halo with a larger one that works with the head. But I'm just nitpicking, the head is kind of growing on me... it adds significantly to the bulk of the model (in a good way). Alys Dwr
looks like it's from one of those green-skins to me. As is the hand/back of SB? Nice conversion, i think the fist works a treat. Von Richthofen
Thanks to all who have responded! In regards to the bolter... it's the front end of two bolters, filed down between them and then glued together. You can't see it in the pics, but I greenstuffed the gap on the bottom and made it look like that grip is all one piece. The back of the bolter was a spare Ork Shoota that I cut the front off of, thus the barrel and the back of the gun are shoota bitz. The hand is actually an over-sized marine hand from a fairly old model that I had lying around loose in my bitz box. I thought, given the iconography of the Crimson Fists, having a slightly larger hand would look pretty good. However, I think it needs something... so I'm thinking of slicing a skull off of something and applying it onto the fist to give it just a touch of detail. I'm very happy with how the Power Fist turned out. I cut it off, and it fit almost perfectly right off the hop. The severed power cables are hidden between his body and the cape, so very little work was required (except the removal of the Templar Icon, which wasn't that bad either.) Thanks for pointing out the flaws in my storm bolter, teh_perfesser. I checked out my Terminator storm bolters and can see what you mean about the end... It's something I probably would have overlooked, but I will be sure to fix it now! Now, in response to the head... I really wanted to represent Cortez's unfortunate handling at the hands of the Dark Eldar, so I envisioned him as needing some bionic enhancements. I've sworn off doing any helmetless marines for my Crimson Fists army, since I have a good number of Black Templars that have gone headgear-less and I just want to do something different. I chose this head because it looked suitably different from any other head in the force. I was also thinking about giving it a different colour to stand out, and perhaps painting a laurel-style design on to it. However, I'm open to any other suggestions on how I might spruce it up a bit. I like the Eagle Halo... and while the helmet does cover it up a bit, I don't think I'll change it. It remains a subtle addition that I'm sure I will ruin by trying to modify! :) Thanks again to all who responded so far. I'll post pics of the fixed up bolter soon. Some Dark Eldar heads on top of the banner/hanging on a chain? I couldn't see Cortez escaping without a big flight/causing as much damage as he could. teh_perfesser
I really wanted to represent Cortez's unfortunate handling at the hands of the Dark Eldar, so I envisioned him as needing some bionic enhancements.Makes sense. That head is really growing on me, it makes him look like a big man in big armor. The bulk is really nice, I want to decapitate my AoBR Captain now. I like the Eagle Halo... and while the helmet does cover it up a bit, I don't think I'll change it. It remains a subtle addition that I'm sure I will ruin by trying to modify! :PThe eagle halo is the nicest halo out there (and it definately can't be removed cleanly). I think it will work with the right paint job; it reminds me a bit of those big neck braces you occasionally see football players wearing which fits with the upbulking of the model's feel. paulson games
Yup, with the head and arms switched out it makes a pretty decent model. My take on the AOBR commander is here: templars thread A dremel tool makes the conversion a snap, and taking off the eagle halo isn't all that hard. It was Paulson's conversion that gave me the idea to try one myself. Thanks again for the tip! Von Richthofen
Alrighty, So I got this done a few days ago, but I didn't have time to take pictures... so here is an update. I fixed up Cortez's storm bolter with the suggestions offered by teh_perfesser, and then started building his command squad. I didn't want to buy a command squad box, so I built the first three brethren (company champ, and two bolter veterans) from stuff in my bits box. I have an apothecary that I got from a friend, but it's in need of some serious filing... so that'll come later, with the Company Standard Bearer. First off, here are pics of the fixed up storm bolter... what drives me nuts is that no matter how smooth the greenstuff looks when I'm done filing it, it always looks like crap in pictures... ah well! http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/stormbolterdetail-front.jpg For other pics: Storm Bolter Detail - right side Storm Bolter Detail - left side Storm Bolter Detail - bottom Now, here's the Company Champion. I used some bits from the BT upgrade sprue (i.e. Helmet and Tabard) but I removed the templar cross on the belt. Once I get some practice, I intend to greenstuff a fist icon both there, and on his combat shield. You'll note the notches on his sword... well, one side had a piece broken out of it when it was being clipped from the sprue, and I filed it out like a groove. However, it looked odd, so I did the same on the other side to balace it out. I'm quite happy with the results. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/CompanyChampion-Front.jpg You can see the other pictures here: Company Champion - left side Company Champion - right side Now, the two stock veterans. The filler guys, so to speak... however, I wanted them to look cool too, obviously. The second one uses some BT Iconography, so I'm thinking of either removing it, GSing over it, or working it into his fluff (I had something in mind before I even put the model together). Here are their pics: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/Veteran01-Front.jpg http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/Veteran01-Side.jpg http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/Veteran02-Front.jpg http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e251/Von_Richthofen/Crimson%20Fists/WIP/Veteran02-Side.jpg They all need a bit of clean-up work, and I want to add more purity seals and grenades, pouches, etc when I have some time tomorrow, but they look complete enough to post here. C&C appreciated! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/162014-aobr-captain-cortezpedro-kantor/#findComment-1910964 Share on other sites
