My first army

I primed up my first batch of 10 marines this morning as well as the bottom of the rhino (so I can hold it from the bottom and prime the other 3 sides later) - I managed to do a good job and all the details are looking sharp. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to start painting them and in the meantime I picked up a new model and have started assembling it. The files are SO much easier to work with for getting rid of those annoying mold lines... I wish I had bought them first thing! I'll post some pics of the new model later tonight or tomorrow! I have 4 guys bathing in simple green (they've been there about 16 hours) and I'm going to let em sit again for another night. I need to find an old toothbrush to scrub em down when they're done their bath. I really hope that the simple green works on those pesky primer layers.

When I'm working with assembled minis to paint, I use alligator clips on the bases to give me a place to hold them that won't foul the paint. With things like the rhino, I sometimes glue a tongue depressor to the bottom where it doesn't show. You can peal this off at the end when you're ready to clear coat.

If you are ever only doing a little bit of stripping (one figure or part), try nail polish remover and q-tips. It works instantly, just takes a lot of q-tips.

Ahh thanks for the 'tip'! :P

Here is my new model fully assembled! I know pics of unpainted plastic (with no green stuff) are boring, but still fun for me! I didn't realize until after I was all done that the base is a bit warped... he's steady enough on his feet but I think I'll weight the front of the base so he looks better from the front.

I'm not going to glue the arms on so I can swap out the weapons if desired. It's not as good as putting magnets in but I think it will work just fine for now. What a great model to put together! I definitely enjoyed this assembly the most so far - not a lot of mold lines to take care of and have a bunch of big guns on something is sweet! I'll be adding some BT specific bits to him before priming.

Tomorrow I tackle highlighting the batch of marines!

I haven't had as much time as I thought I might in the last few days to work on my minis, but I did get some highlights on, built up the white shoulder pads and tried painting the eyes. I went ahead and drybrushed the chest eagles with an old junker of a round brush and it didn't go so hot. I'm going to pick up a soft flat brush on the cheap before I give it another go.

I'm resisting the urge to do any touch up work until these guys are done... and by done I mean low end TT quality and I think they're almost there. I'm going to paint up the weapons and cloaks and then handle the shoulder pads (mostly transfers) and move on to my putting my scouts together. I purposely left most of these guys vanilla so I can save my BT upgrade sprue parts for when I've got a little more practice under my belt.

The pictures up close make me cringe but at arms length I think they look fine for a first effort.

I've been sick the last couple of days but I did manage to 'finish' my first batch of 5 marines. Here's the picture!

I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. I went out and got some testors spray gloss and dull coats which performed as advertised and the transfers turned out very nicely (thank the emperor). I did try to build up the reds by doing a coat of dark flesh, then a 50-50 dark flesh blood red and finally a straight blood red on some of the details but it doesn't look much different than just the straight blood red to me.

For the next batch I'd like to:

- Dry brush the chest eagles much more consistently

- Do a better job on the shoulder pads in general. The edging on these guys is a bit sloppy.

- Highlight the face armor

- Figure out how to do the eyes properly. It was a dogs breakfast on the first go.

- Jazz up the weapons a bit more. I did codex grey with boltgun metal barrels for the bolt pistols and just boltgun on the chainsword teeth and doesn't seem enough!

C&C is always welcome!
