They will look back and laugh at this...

Ok, so I've completed my goal. I have 1500 points of Space Marines, formed into a (relatively) flexible fighting force. I have a solid army that has lasted me out in ranged fights, close combat and even (in one very amusing yet pointless game) the slow, steady massacre of 70 ork boys and their associated vehicles for a loss of two HQ Marines, a Terminator and a Dreadnought. I've ploughed my way through Orks, Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Black Templars and Nurgle Marines with a reasonable rate of success. My characters have names and I have a very affection bond with a Heavy Bolter lugging Scout by the name of "Sergeant McLucky" who in one memorabe game, accounted for thirty Ork Boyz on his own.

Yes, all told, my Imperial Lions are a competant fighting force. They're reliable, dependable, with a small colour pallet of Codex Grey, Blood Red, Dark Flesh, Chaos Black, Bolt Gun Metal (and on HQ choices) Burnished Gold. They are uniform. They are solid. They are uncomprimising and saving the Chaplain, I'm starting to hunger for a painting challenge, and a break from the monotomy of painting Grey with Red trim, black weapon and silver detail.

But what I'm really thinking of doing is branching out into the Ordo Hereticus to provide a nice contrast with my clean cut, knightly, pristine, Samuel L. Jackson Marines.

Where would people reccomend that I start?

I'd recommend looking into adding a few Sisters of Battle units, like a Canoness and some Seraphim to add a mobile tarpit unit to your force, or unit or two of standard Sisters in a Rhino can pile out and Divine Guidance an enemy squad out of existence. For me, I'm picking a Canoness and 14 Sisters into a Land Raider Crusader, fully with the intention of whipping out tough enemy infantry.

One of the inquisitors from codex; Witch Hunters would suit you well if you are seeking to link your chapter to the Ordo Hereticus, i guess. There is both a HQ and Elite Inquisitor in the codex, and both can tool outh themselves and their retinue for whatever purpose u need them.. be it a lot of powerweapons in close combat or hvyBolters at range.

Also you can take a look at the inquisitorial stormtroopers which are cheaper than the average marine but have BS4, specialised with plasmaguns or meltas this unit could be a hard-hitter if properly used, prefferably mounted in a rhino or chimera!

And also if you wish to use the Witch Hunter as parent list you can field cool stuff as Penitent Engines and Orbital Bombardment, and in turn allying your Space Marines into the inquisitorial strikeforce.

I've done the same, although I took a slightly different approach - my MIGHTY DRAGON FISTS (painted bright orange with white shoulder pads, black trimming and as many cigars as I can get away with) have always been accompanied by agents of the inquisition, whom have been represented in the list at most points levels up to 2000.

If you want the 'tactically superior' option, stick with sisters of battle. Then again, if winning games is a foremost priority then you might as well forget these allied shenanigans and just grab a land raider.

However, if you want allied units for an opportunity to paint something different, then just pick what you like the look of!

Personally, I think the best choice by far is an Inquisitor with retinue, possibly accompanied by Storm Troopers and even an assasin. Their lack of power armour sets them out very distinctively from your Space marines, and I don't think anyone could argue that there is a unit with more personality than an Inquisitor with a retinue. Painting-wise, they can make a great contrast to your space marines.
