Space Wolves and Werewolves

Recommended Posts

Well, after much listening to of werewolf music and much musing over fine Fenrisian ale, I began to wonder, just how much have others come to see your Wolves as werewolves? Odd question I know, but hear me out.

A lot of werewolf lore nowadays has them as savage, insanely powerful, yet noble creatures. Some has them as mindless beasts bent on utter destruction and carnage. Others have them as a sentient beings possessed of a terrible curse (or boon, depending on your POV) that must fight to keep the inner primal monster in check. Those familiar with White Wolf's Werewolf games may be familiar with the last two, and new movies are starting to drift in this direction.

So, to the real question... when you are fielding your Wolves, how often do you get "Werewolf Marines? Awesome!!!111!!"? In my area, I've started to get this reaction a bit more with the influx of new 40k players.

My view of the Space Wolf is identical to the second (White Wolf) camp on werewolves. The Sons of Russ bear the Curse of Wulfen within themselves, constantly fighting to keep the rending, tearing Wulfen under control. A single moment of laxity could let the beast escape, sending the Wolf on a murderous rampage. But from the terrible Curse of Wulfen the Wolves draw great strength, keener senses than anything else in the galaxy, and a primal ferocity beyond that of their peers. Of course, the constant wolf fetishes don't hurt the "Space Wolves = Werewolves" argument either.

How do you see your Marines? Man, wolf, or something still in between?

The answer to that, Vash, would be "give them to OID for his Apoc army" :P

But yeah, I dont see them as werewolves. Just space vikings with some killer fluff thrown in. The reason for this is that I would then have to think of the BA's as our vampire nemesis, and then we'd just have the setup for yet another terrible, emo, highschool targeted vampire/werewolf movie...

I think the Space Wolves, like many of GW's "original" stuff is a hybrid of various sections of myth, history and legend. In our case, it's got some of the Germanic/Nordic tribe themes prevelent from the fall of the Roman Empire, and also this semi-Werewolf bit. Except in this case, the Wulfen is a symbol of failure for an aspirant, showing them they can no longer control what they are forced to live with and the mental degeneration gives way to physical deformatity.

That's how I read it anyway.
