Wolf Guard Hengist
As the last of the Orks scrambled into the forest Magnus surveyed the damage, the Rhinos had held up to the small arms fire of the orks and despite a few cuts and bruises the Blood Claws were all combat effective. Olafs Grey Hunters had been overwhelmed by the Orks, brother Skalders arm looked as if would need removing at some point but some basic field repairs had made him stable. Magnus suddenly caught a scent he did not recognise itwas not from his own packs but it was the scent of a wolf. As he studied his surroundings he saw a figure emerge from the tree line. Magnus' keen eyesight picked out the shape of a lone Wolf Scout approaching. The scout looked wild almost Wulfen, his armour was covered in scraggy wolf pelts and furs, Magnus picked out a necklace of severed Ork ears hanging around his neck. As he approached the Scout bowed. "Greetings Magnus Bluelegs congratulations on your victory over the greenskins. I am Torvind, Lord Morkai sent me and my pack to Scout this area before you arrived. I thought to make contact in person as the Secure Channels are no longer secure." The wolf Scout continued his report "When you made landfall it was not only Ork eyes that saw you. A scout Cadre of Tau have been tracking your movements since you arrived. They now lay in wait near the drop zone waiting for you to come back. We would have engaged but our orders are strictly recon but allow me to assist you in your upcoming battle" The Scout updated Magnus' Auspex with the location of the Tau before disappearing back into the forest. Torvind had informed Magnus that he could not commit to battle underorders from Lord Morkai but would aid if needed. Magnus gave the order to move out and within minutes the Rhinos were pushing their way back to the Drop zone. We will let the Tau think we are falling into their trap but we will be ready. Tau Forces 3 x Stealth Suits 1 Fusion Blaster 3 Drones 10 Firewarriors Markerlights 10 Firewarriors Markerlights 6 Firewarriors Setup The Tau had intiative and set up first making use of a large ruin in the deployment zone giving them a good field of fire over most of the battle field. I deployed both Rhinos behind a building keeping them out of line of sight of the entire of the battlefield. I decided to let the Tau have first turn as they would have to move out of cover in order to line up any shots on my transports. We both had an objective and a secret objective in this game. My standard objective was to defend the Objective marker in my deployment zone and my secret mission was to kill the enemy commander which was the Stealth suits leader in this game. My opponent had to defend his deployment zone marker as well. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01831.jpg http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01830.jpg Tau Turn 1 Unable to draw line of sight onto any of the Rhinos the Tau Stealth Suits move forward into the open relying on the Stealth ability to keep them safe. The small unit of Firewarriors ran forward towards my board edge into cover of a ruin, giving away his secret objective of getting a unit into my deployment zone. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01833.jpg Space Wolves Turn 1 Both Rhinos gunned their engines and roared towards the Tau Stealth Suits. The Blood Claws Rhino popped his Smoke Launchers while the Grey Hunters tucked in behind it to give itself cover from the Tau. No shooting from the Space Wolves this turn but we were closing in. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01832.jpg Tau Turn 2 The Tau now had a target and opened up at the Blood Claws Rhino with everything he had but a combination of bad rolling for armour penetration and smoke cover resulted in two shaken results. The Stealth Suits tried to jet pack out of the way but they were dangerously close to the Space Wolves. The small unit of Firewarriors again edged towards my board edge. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01834.jpg Space Wolves Turn 2 The Blood Claws dismounted and moved bfore the Rhino allowing them to move very close to the Stealth Suits whilst their Rhino moved up to a stone wall effectively creating cover for the Blood Claws from a squad of Firewarriors. easily in range the Blood Claws opened up with Bolt Pistols dropping a couple of drones whilst the Grey Hunters broke off towards the smaller unit of Tau. With a mighty howl Magnus led the Blood Claws charging into the Stealth Suits. Caught off guard the Hi-tech suits didnt even get chance to swing back before they were cut down by Magnus and Blood Claws. After the combat phase Magnus and Blood Claws consilidated into cover behind a large wall. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01834.jpg http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01835.jpg Tau Turn 3 Having lost a large portion of thier army the Tau were set on revenge. Both Firewarrior units moved into rapid fire range and let loose at the Blood Claws dropping two and wrecking the Rhino. The Tau were keen not to make the same mistake again and remained over 12" away from the Blood Claws. The small unit had now wormed their way into my deployment zone and could acheive their objective if let alone. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01836.jpg Space Wolves Turn 3 Pinned behind the wall and unable to close in Magnus did not want to risk the rest of his pack to 20 rapid fireing Firewarriors. Having caused enough damage the Blood Claws began to move back towards their board edge towards the smaller group of Tau who were now cut off. The Grey Hunters had now parked their Rhino on my objective threatening to wipe out the Tau if they broke cover. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01837.jpg Tau Turn 4 Sensing defeat the Tau commander consilidated his Firewarriors onto his own objective and fired some long range shots at the Blood Claws causing one more casualty. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01838.jpg Space Wolves Turn 4 Magnus and his remaining Blood Claws advanced to the ruins and let loose with some Bolt pistol shots but none hit home. he then charged but I rolled a double 1 for difficult terrain and the assult fell short much to the Tau's relief. Tau Turn 5 This turn saw some ineffective Tau fire at Magnus and his Blood Claws. Meanwhile his unit of 6 was pinned, if he broke cover Olaf's Greyhunters would cut him down with bolter fire and if he stayed he had a pack of angry Blood Claws to deal with. The Tau commander chose the latter and the Small unit of doomed Tau bent over and grabbed their ankles. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/Zal2885/Space%20Wolves/DSC01839.jpg Space Wolves Turn 5 As expected the only action this turn was the slaughtering of the Tau in the Ruins, it was quick and clean. At this point the game ended, I had achieved both my objective whilst the Tau had managed to secure their own objective but at a heavy cost.
