Long Fang Heavy Support

Well Met Battle Brothers ...

I have another thread discussing Long Fangs (see Space Wolf Forum). After discussing the point cost and benefits of Long Fang as Heavy Support, I decided to at them to my 1000 point Escalation Force.

I have a unit of 3 Long Fangs (Pack Leader and two Missile Launchers) and a Rhino for a dedicated transport.

Now I imagine many veterans are saying 'Fangs don't need no transport'.

The cost was ...

Tonight I played a game where I deployed the Rhino just back and left of the center of my force. The Rhino was deployed with the Long Fangs embarked.

The Rhino never moved.

On Turn One, I fired the Hunter Killer Missile and the two Fangs fired their missile launchers from the Fire Points in the Rhino.

I took out the Demolisher Cannon on a Vindicator and also took out the twin-linked Heavy Bolters on a Razorback.

The Rhino still didn't move.

I continued to fire from the Fire Points in the Rhino. It was not targetted, but if it was it would have been a tank to crack before the infantry with heavy weapons would become targets.

This tactic allowed the small unit to fire and remain under cover. Yes if a huge mob of Ork boyz would have assaulted it , they could have popped it and blocked exits and killed the entire squad.

It was a fun and interesting squad for the points.

you i must say thats not a terrible idea. i hadn't thought of that tactic. normally i post mine up on a decent vantage point, and have my 4 missle snipers go to. i generally pull my long fang leader first, and then a missle, but thats me. mine suprisingly have yet to die (and haven't been fielded in 2 games :P), though they have been dropped to 2 members. still, i love mine, and the snipers of doom will always have a spot with me ;)

I tried it out a while ago, my opponent blew it up first turn and wounded all the long fangs inside, seeing me fail 4 out of the 5 rolls... I tried it a few weeks after that and they proceeded to net me 500+ points without a single casualty taken.

The first time was pure bad luck, but I did better when I used a screen in front with my normal rhinos and moved them up and out of the way when it was my turn to shoot, worked much better, and gave my opponent something else to worry about... the 30+ SW's running down their lines in armoured vehicles.

I played the same unit again with great success!

I am only using a unit of THREE Long Fangs. The two equipped with Missile Launchers fire from the Rhino's fire ports, the Pack Leader is able to split fire, and the Rhino is armed with a Hunter Killer Missile.

This last time I played against a Space Marine infantry force so they didn't have any 'big' kills but were allowed to fire at will at the power-armored foot troops from their vantage point on a hill flanking an objective (which was held by Grey Hunters).

In Turn Five, the Rhino with the Long Fangs moved to intercept an Assault Squad (that was locked in Assault) in case they became a threat.

Great game!

I'm sure this rhino as a bunker thing came up before, from memory people said you couldnt split fire as the pack leader needed to use a fire point for you to do this, leaving only one other for shooting?

You could argue all sorts of reasons why the Pack Leader wouldnt need a fire point, I would be in favour of this being allowed, technology surely doesnt need him to see the unit with his eyes alone.

D.

I always found that argurment silly. He is by definition NOT firing, thus why would he need a fire point?

Anyway, I have found the ultimate broken steroid use of this tactic....

Currently in construction, for my next Apocolypse game....

The Space Wolf Stormlord.

Pack it with 5 packs of Long fangs..... thats TWENTY missile launcher or plasma cannon shots off its top platform!!! And with the ability to target them at up to 10 different enemies (2 each).

And still with transport room left over to stash a full squad of 15 Blood claws in the bottom deck. The opponent will forget that they are in there, and if they charge you, out come the Claws!!!

Im thinking it will be a lot of fun.

What does everyone else think?

My Long Fangs did excellent again tonight! This time against Orks.

(Small unit of three in a Rhino)

The Long Fangs flanked my Grey Hunters and controlled an area which I turned into a 'bottle neck'.

Turn One ... I fired the Hunter Killer Missile at a Battle Wagon full of Lootaz (read Shaken)

... I split fire from the Long Fangs at the Battle Wagon and a 2nd Battle Wagon full of Burnaz (Weapon Destroyed)

Turn Two ... I fired both Long Fangs at an Ork Truck (Wrecked with the Ramshackle rule)

Turn Three ... I fired both Long Fangs at another Ork Truck (KABOOM!)

Turn Four ... I fired Frag Missiles into the Storm Boyz which had just Deep Struck.

Long Fangs remained untouched.

Game Over!
