Posted this in Liber Victorum. Just thought I'd share this here as well.

The Scenario

Seize Ground, Pitched Battle

2D3 + 2

We amended the number of objectives simply because of the sheer number of scoring units we all had. We rolled and got 7 objectives, which seemed to be a nice odd number to use.

The Table

8' x 4'

Fairly straightforward urban ruins. I had enough terrain to provide a very good cityfight setting, and made for an interesting battle with many chokepoints and a lot of stuff to block LoS. A large tank factory was placed on the far left corner, with a three story wall placed in front to prevent any units from unfairly using the factory's high vantage point to snipe. A large tower was placed in the bottom left, with a ruined tank in the immediate corner.

To the right of the tower was a nice two story chapel, and right above it was a courtyard/plaza with a simple 1 story structure in the centre. The terrain to the right became much more towering, with all the buildings 2 and three stories tall providing ample cover. The structures were all placed at least 6" apart to prevent units from just jumping from cover to cover while laying down suppressive fire.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/The_Table.jpg

For simplicity's sake I have chosen not to illustrate all the barricades we used (about a dozen) scattered about as cover. Needless to say, in order to ignore any real cover, units had to pretty much be within 6" to 8" of each other.

Pre-game commentary

With a horde against us (model count and points, we were outnumbered 263 to 119 models, and had a total of approximately 3500 points to their just over 5000), we knew we had an uphill battle that would require a sound battleplan that had to focus on the objectives; killing the enemy is secondary to holding a majority of the counters and contesting the rest.

Our three Space Marine lists were geared very differently, but we noticed that together we complemented each other well. I was well equipped for close range firefights, and geared for taking out bigger, tougher targets with my Sternguard. Thus I was tasked with taking out Nightbringer, the Carnifexes, and the Hive Tyrant, and with Pedro, would be our defensive line should our spearhead be blunted.

The Red Scorpions (although with his color scheme a more appropriate name would have been the "Teal Scorpions") were very mobile, and well suited to pincer attacks and flanking. His Land Speeders were assigned to target the hordes of infantry arrayed against us with long ranged firepower, while his bikes supported the rest of our infantry where needed.

The White Scars were equipped for combat, and would provide our combat staying power. His task was simple. Ride alongside my Wolves, and whatever I and the Scorpions fail to kill in shooting, he mops up in combat.

That was our plan, and required our armies to work in tandem. A wrong move would throw our plan into disarray and leave us over-run.

Deployment

We won the roll for table sides, but elected to let the enemy deploy first. While we would be giving up the first turn, we decided it would be far more advantageous to determine the weakest flank, and deploy the bulk of our forces, and attack aggressively in an attempt to wipe out a significant portion of their army to even the odds.

The majority of the Orks deployed on the left flank, with the Lootas taking up positions in the factory ruins giving them a superior vantage point over the majority of the left side.

The Tyranids deployed in the center, Two of the Carnifexes closer to the Orks to provide support as they advanced, while the third was placed on the right to support the Necrons. The Raveners were used to screen the Carnifexes and the resilient Nobs in turn screened the Raveners. Confident in their knowledge that they would get first turn, the rest of the Tyranids were deployed in the open to close the gap as quickly as possible.

The Necrons took up the right flank, supported by a mob of Orks.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Deployment_a.jpg

Thus it fell to the Astartes to deploy. As a collective we decided that the right flank was the weakest, with only the Necrons, and a mob of Boyz holding it. Taking the right flank quickly would allow us to eliminate the Necrons (1500 points, bringing the sides relatively back into balance) and tackle all the mounstrous creatures relatively piecemeal without being surrounded by a sea of Orks.

The White Scars deployed the Razorbacks and Rhino closest to the edge, with the Terminators and Vanguard to the right. The two Scars Tactical Squads elected to Combat Squad, with 3 of the 4 mini-squads deploying into the ruins. My Wolves took up position to their left, with 4 Rhinos boxing in the Vanguard to act as cover. The Scars Predator deployed to my left to act as a screen should the Carnifexes try to snipe my transports early on with Strangler fire.

The Scorpions took up position closest to the center, hidden behind terrain, giving them the ability to move where their support was needed most. The Land Speeder Tornado took up the far right flank, while the two Typhoons daringly took up our far left flank to act as a deterrent should the Orks try to roll up our flank.

The Broodlord infiltrated in the ruins to provide a Synapse net for the Gaunts, and the Scouts with Telion infiltrated into the chapel to try and pick at the Broodlord early on.

Turn 1

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_1.jpg

The enemy surge forward, their initial movement claiming no less than 5 of the 7 objectives, with a 6th right in their grasp. The Necrons all run forward, although their run moves leave the Nightbringer outpacing his slower peons. The Scarabs move into the building, the tanks in front their obvious targets. The Genestealers and Boyz on the right flank move up to support the Necrons, with the Carnifex lumbering behind. The Tankbustas and Broodlord/Retinue decide to hang back to act as a reserve. The Tyranids advance up the center while the Ork Boyz on the left move up to claim the objectives.

With a whoop and a flash, the Lootas let rip at the scouts, their Deffguns accounting for no less than half of the squad. The three Carnifexes target the same squad, leaving only Telion standing. With nothing else in range, Telion rolls for Morale and stands with a resounding 3.

Already a squad down, we need to close fast before we are over run. Telion moves to the lower level in an attempt to claim more cover, while the Typhoons inch forward, ensuring that the Lootas and Carnifexes do not have LoS and/or Range. I advance my Wolves forward and deploy my Marines, hoping to draw the attention away from the more vulnerable Scorpions.

We know that target priority is critical if we want any hope of seizing victory, so we constantly communicat between the three of us to ensure we are maximizing our firepower. The Nightbringer is the biggest threat in our right flank, and with his invulnerable save, we know we can target him without worrying about intervening terrain. My Sternguard load Hellfire shells and unleash a torrent of rapid-firing bolt shells into the Ethereal monster, and when the smoke clears, the Nightbringer is no more, it's death spasms taking out two Orks from the nearby mob.

Our next targets are the Scarabs and the Ork Boyz, since we don't want to be tied down in combat while the rest of the enemy closes in. The White Scars shoot into the closest Scarab swarms, their fire taking out the unit. This allows at least half of my Tactical Marines to rapid fire into the Boyz without giving them a cover save, killing an impressive 13 Orks. The Predator lays down suppressive fire into the Raveners, although its fire is less impressive, only causing enough wounds to take out 1 Ravener. The Typhoons trump the Predator, their frag missiles accounting for no less than 16 of the Orks on the far left flank.

Turn 2

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_2_a.jpg

The enemy continue their speedy advance, but much more cautiously on the left flank, wary of the Typhoons on the hunt. The Immortals pull back to allow the Warriors room to advance up into the ruins. The Genestealers and a Scarab swarm move forward while the last Scarab swarm rushes to the Predator. The Tyranids and the rest of the Orks continue to wheel around, claiming another objective.

The Lootas open up once again on the Scouts, taking Telion out of the game. The two Carnifexes on the left shoot into the Predator and Rhino, but only manage to Shake both tanks. The Carnifex on the right fires into the cluster of marines, a target rich environment for it's Barbed Strangler. The blast claims 5 Tactical Marines and 2 Sternguard from the far right squad. The two warrior squads rapid fire into the Terminators, taking out a Veteran in a wave of Gauss energy, while the Immortals shoot into the left Sternguard squad, taking out 4 of the Veterans.

The Scarabs and Genestealers charge into the left Tactical Squad, and in a flurry of claws, cut down no less than 8 of the Tactical marines, while losing only 3 Genestealers in return. The marines pass their Morale check and continue to fight on. The Scarabs charge the Predator and with their Disruption fields, succeed in immobilizing the Predator. With the Wolves so close together, the Ork charge hits all three squads, the Wolves reacting and counter-charging into the fray.

Despite the Furious Charge of the Orks, the Marines have the superior initiative and with Berek's Inspiring Presence, cut down the Orks before they get a chance to attack. The Wolves use the momentum from their countercharge to bring them closer to the Necrons.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_2_b.jpg

The Wolves used their movement to draw them closer to the Necrons, while the Rhinos created a wall to box in the Genestealers and prevent them from tearing apart our more important units. The Typhoons slide right to thin out the advancing Mob squad, while Berek unleashes his Wolves on the Necrons. The Wolf Lord himself remains behind. The Bikes ride out to take on the Scarabs, while 2 of the combat squads deploy back into the Razorbacks. The third combat squad advances into the ruins in order to take the objective. The White Scars assault squad, led by Kor'sarro Khan, move forward and deploy from their Rhino in preparation to take on the Genestealers.

Again we prioritize our targets, and to ensure that the Typhoons live, the Lootas are the first on the chopping block. Berek Thunderfist unleashes his Orbital Bombardment upon them, taking out 3 in a maelstrom of fire and forcing them to flee the battlefield. This leaves the Typhoons free to target the Boyz in front, their impressive firepower again taking out half the squad.

The Bikes let loose upon the Scarabs and eliminated the unit, while the Razorbacks shoot the Carnifex, causing a wound on the monstrosity. The Predator unleashes a torrent of fire into the Raveners, but in its typical fashion, succeeds in killing only 1 Ravener. The Tornado fires it's Heavy Flamer and Multi-Melta, taking down 4 Necron Warriors, while the White Scars Vanguard pistols take out another warrior. The Terminators run forward in an attempt to get close the gap. The Vanguard and the left Sternguard squad pistol shot the Immortals, but their higher toughness leaves them unscathed. The last Sternguard and Marine squad shoot at the center Warriors squad with pistols and manage to take out 2 of the machines.

With a howl and a roar, the Marines charge - the Sternguard and Vanguard plow into the Immortals (the Vanguard combine-charged into the Warriors as well), the White Scars Vanguard and Terminators charge into the warriors with ferocious speed, while the other Sternguard and Marines charge into the Warriors in the center. With Berek's Inspiring Presence, the Sternguard and Vanguard Sergeant lay into the Immortals, the Relic Blade and Power Fist accounting for 5 of the Immortals, while the Sternguard account for another. The Immortals fail their morale check and are cut down as they attempt to flee.leaving the Sternguard free to wrap around and away from the Genestealers.

The Vanguard, Sternguard, and Marines attack the center Warriors, but fail to perform as well, taking out only 6 of the Warriors while losing 2 Marines in return. The remaining Warriors hold. The White Scars Vanguard unleash their fury, cutting down the Warriors where they stand and consolidating forward. The Terminators advance in the wake of their quicker brethren.

The Genestealers finish the remaining two Marines off, and shuffle around, rolling poorly for their consolidation move.

Turn 3

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_3_a.jpg

8 of the Necrons pass their We'll Be Back roll, pulling themselves together, while the remaining 8 disappear off the battlefield. The remaining squad and the Lord close in with the Terminators and Vanguard in an attempt to cause as many wounds to our heavy hitters as possible. The Carnifex lumbers back towards the Broodlord, while the Genestealers move towards the Sternguard. The Scarabs, seeing that the Predator is not as dangerous as it appears to be, move to take on the Rhinos in an attempt to hamper our mobility, with the Raverers moving in to engage the second Rhino.

The Hive Tyrant shoots at the closest Rhino in hopes of destroying it, allowing the Raveners to engage the bikes, but fails to damage the vehicle. The two Carnifexes on the left shoot at the Typhoons, but their shots scatter too far. The last Carnifex fires on the Sternguard, but fails to kill any of them.

The Tankbustas move forward in an attempt to engage the Sternguard, but in their zeal spot a Rhino in the distance and instead unleash their Rokkits at the transport, Shaking the vehicle and destroying it's Storm Bolter.

The Necron Lord and Warriors charge the Terminators and Vanguard, while the Genestealers - combining abysmal difficult terrain rolls with a ludicrously low fleet roll - fail to reach anything. The Chaplain strikes at the Lord, but his attacks bounce off the Lord, who in turn strikes down 2 Terminators. The Vanguard and the Terminators elect to attack the Warriors, cutting them all down in a flurry of attacks. The Lord attempts to flee but is promptly cut down in the Sweeping Advance.

The remaining Vanguard and Marines proceed to strike down the remaining Warriors and without the Resurrection Orb, there aren't enough Necrons remaining to prevent a Phase Out. The Sternguard consolidate towards the Carnifex, while the Marines move towards the far right objective.

The Scarabs attack the furthest Rhino, but fail to do much else but Shake the tank. The Ravener unit's performance is equally effective.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_3_b.jpg

The enemy has given us breathing space to reorganize and regroup our forces, and we use this turn wisely. The closest Rhinos advance up to provide cover, while the bike squads advance up to take on the Raveners. Another Rhino moves up and acts as a roadblock, denying the Carnifexes LoS to the marine squads as they advance up.

The 8-strong Sternguard squad advances and embarks into the remaining Rhino, and are joined by Berek and Kor'sarro.

Both Vanguard Squads - supported by the Tornado - advance on the Tankbustas, while the two 5-man Marine squads consolidate onto the farthest objectives. The Terminators run up behind the Vanguard, while the last Sternguard squad moves into position.

The Razorbacks maneouver up and target the Carnifex, which goes down under a hail of shells. The Vanguard and Marines take out the Tankbustas with a hail of bolt fire, and the Sternguard use their Dragonfire shells to eradicate the Genestealers threatening the Assault Marines, who run up to join their brethren.

The Typhoons target the Broodlord, and 3 of the Genestealers fall to the Frag missiles, while the Bikes target the Raveners. Their shooting accounts for 2 of the Raveners, and the ensuing combat accounts for another, although the marines lose 2 Bikes to Rending.

Turn 4

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_4_a.jpg

The enemy elects to abandon their positions in a last ditch effort to halt the Astartes Spearhead, the Orks running to the Wolves and White Scars while the closer Tyranids target the more immediate threat of the Scorpions. The unit of 14 Boyz heads towards the Typhoons in an attempt to them down.

The Carnifexes shoot at the second Bike Squad, and kill 3 Bikers, while the Boyz fail to kill the Typhoons.

The Hive Tyrant and a unit of Gaunts charge into combat, and with the Ravener, finish off the 3-man Bike Squad. The Tyranids consolidate backwards.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_4_b.jpg

The Vanguard squads, Assault squad, and Tornado advance on the Broodlord, while the Razorbacks move into position behind them to tackle the advancing enemy infantry. The 3 Rhinos below advance forward, the combat squad borne in the White Scars Rhino deploying into the ruins in front of the Predator. The last Rhino advances up and deploys it's cargo, with Berek running towards the marines above to lend them the attack bonus from his Inspiring Presence.

The Predator fires and takes out the last Ravener, while the White Scars marines target and take out a Gaunt squad. The other two Rhinos fire and take out 4 Gaunts from another brood. The Typhoons lend their fire to the Orks in front, and take out 8 of them. Both Sternguard squads fire at the Hive Tyrant, but only manage to take out 2 of it's 4 wounds. The Captain leaves his Bike squad as they fire on the Hive Tyrant, but even they fail to hurt it. The Tornado engulfs the Genestealers in promethium, taking out 3 of the Genestealers, while the Vanguard and Assault marines charge in to finish the job.

The Genestealers take out 2 of the Assault marines, while the Broodlord takes out 4 of the White Scars Vanguard. What's left strikes back and finishes off the Broodlord and his retinue, before consolidating back into terrain.

The Bike squad charges the Hive Tyrant, losing 2 of their number before causing another wound to the Tyrant with the Power Fist.

Turn 5

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_5_a.jpg

The Orks call their Waagh, and surge forward straight at the Astartes, the Nobs heading towards the Assault Marines while the Orks make a break for the Sternguard. The Gaunts rush in to support the Hive Tyrant, while the Carnifexes move closer to the Rhinos and take aim at the Vanguard.

The Orks below move close and take potshots at the Typhoons as they charge, but fail once again to hurt the skimmers. The Hive Tyrant and Gaunts finish off the Bike squad, losing only 4 Gaunts in return. They consolidate back towards the Orks.

The Nobs charge in and with a whopping 24 strength 7 attacks, pound the Assault squad into mulch, losing only 1 Nob in return. The Warboss and his Nobs tear apart the last of the White Scars Vanguard. The Nobs stay in cover, consolidating back to leave the Terminators out of charge range, while the Warboss consolidates behind the Nobs.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_5_b.jpg

The Vanguard move in to strike at the Nobs, while the Tornado lines up to fire it's Heavy Flamer. The Razorbacks advance up to while the Terminators move into the ruins towards the Tyranids. The Sternguard consolidate their position on the objective and line up hellfire bolts to take out the Tyrant. The Scorpion Captain moves in along with Kor'Sarro and Berek.

The Typhoons fire on the mob of Boyz in front of them and take them out with focused Heavy Bolter and missile fire.

The Marines open up on the closest Gaunt squad, taking out 6 with a frag missile and bolter fire. The remaining 2 are taken out by the two Rhinos on the left. The Captain and Kor'sarro put some bolt shells into a Gaunt squad, taking out 3. The Sternguard rapid fire into the Hive Tyrant and take down his last wound.

The Tornado lets loose with the flamer, dousing the Nobs and causing 3 wounds. The Marines on the far right flank put what bolter fire they can, as well as a krak missile, into the unit, causing a futher wound (although the krak missile failed to hit). The Predator opens up on the furthest Gaunt squad and causes 2 casualties, while the Razorbacks take out 5 Orks.

The Vanguard charge into the Nobs, taking out all but 1 Nob and losing 1 Veteran in return. The Nobs fail their Morale test and are run down by the Vanguard. The Captain and Kor'sarro finish off the Gaunt squad they shot at and consolidate towards the Carnifexes.

Turn 6

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_6_a.jpg

The Orks advance forward - the Warboss and Nobs head towards the Vanguard, the smaller unit of Orks heads towards the Terminators, and the biggest unit of Orks heading towards the Razorbacks. The Carnifexes move forward to engage, one towards the characters and one towards the Marines. The Gaunts attempt to move back but fail their Instinctive Behavior test and flee.

A Carnifex fires on the Marines, and then charges in, leaving all but 1 standing. The marine holds bravely and faces the Carnifex alone in a heroic last stand. The second Carnifex charges the Captain, but fails to get past his Iron Halo. The Captain deals a wound back to the Carnifex with his Relic Blade.

The Boyz charge the Sternguard, Terminators and Razorbacks in a furious charge that leaves one Razorback destroyed, one immobilized and weaponless, but failing to touch the Sternguard and Terminators. The Astartes strike back and take out the smaller mob, with the Terminators taking out 8 Orks from the larger Mob. Despite losing combat, the Orks hold.

The Vanguard strike first, striking down the Nobs, before the Warboss tears a Veteran in half. The Warboss holds in combat despite losing his retinue.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/artrelegis/BatRep1/Turn_6_b.jpg

The Tornado and Typhoons finish off the last of the Gaunts in our last shooting phase. Kor'sarro moves around and charges the bottom Carnifex, while Berek and his Wolves charge the Carnifex and Orks. The Vanguard strike down the Warboss, in a fury of energized blades, while the Terminators and Sternguard finish off the Orks.

The Captain with some assistance from Berek and the Sternguard cut down the Carnifex, with the Carnifex's attacks bouncing off the Captain's Iron Halo.

Kor'sarro, in a spectacticular coup de grace, charges in and with a swing of his blade, cleaves the Carnifex, striking it down with a 6 to wound in combat.

Post-game commentary

The game took 4 hours, and was a definite challenge for us. The only real reason we emerged victorious was because we played as a cohesive, unified force, while our opponents failed to coordinate their strikes with each other to take full advantage of their strengths. Thus what began as an incredibly uphill battle progressively turned into a massacre.

The MVPs of the match most definitely had to be the Typhoons, and Berek (as Pedro Kantor). The Typhoons, through sheer number of kills, played a big role in our victory, while Berek rallied the Astartes around him into a fervor, allowing them to strike that much harder in combat.

Space Wolves

My army, I elected to use the newest Codex: Space Marines

Booo, we get most of the new wargear rules anyway and most of the new tanks, why bother losing all the Wolfy goodness for Kantor and Combat Tactics? ;)

I just don't see the reason...

Anyway congrats on the Victory, fighting beside White Scars and Red Scorpions sounds like a lot of fun.

That was my thought.

I asked myself why does this belong in the Space Wolf forum?

But nice batrep though.
