AdeptusDavidus
So I've never played Warhammer at all, the closest thing I've ever done to building minis is building scale models as a kid. But here I am, with a command squad, an assault squad, a tactical squad, and a razorback to build. Being the sort of man that I am, I couldn't just assemble and paint them, no sir. Instead, I began on a Mark VIII conversion, aiming to match the look of the art. That's proven a bit tedious, and I've had to start on another mini just to keep building without getting more annoyed. So I grabbed some bits from my various sprues and started building! But I couldn't leave well enough alone and be content with GW's parts. So here's the current state of affairs. Champion torso, normal bolt-pistol arm, legs cobbled up from a mix of assault and tactical legs, and a lightly modified banner-bearer's arm (hand removed and rotated - which I need to do over to get the angle where I want it - and a little trimming and GSing at the shoulder to get it to stick out right). crazychib
Pretty good pose. I would stick a jump pack on him as it looks like he has just landed. What are you going to put in his other hand? Dragonkin Arenis
I agree with the above post, he looks a lot like he's landed, good work so far, should be fun to see how he looks when completed and painted ^^ Arenis Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/162725-my-first-space-marine/#findComment-1914967 Share on other sites
AdeptusDavidus
The stick bit in his right hand will be turned into a power-glaive or chain-glaive kind of thing, with lots of chaplainy bits attached. Funny story, though: I can't leave well enough alone, and decided to use those legs for a veteran sergeant with a jump pack, so now I'm working up a new pair of legs for the chappie. I plucked the Mk6 leg (left lower leg) off of that set and crenelated the top edge of it, going for kind of an old-world castley feel. I should be able to throw together the new legs after work today. Commander Sasha
I've always found most marines look a bt stumpy-legged; this is the first figure I've seen that looks 'heroically proportioned', ie long legs (like me!), rather than a mid jump or landing pose. Will be following with interest :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/162725-my-first-space-marine/#findComment-1933439 Share on other sites
AdeptusDavidus
I'll take that as a compliment, Commander Sasha. :P Progress has been slow, unfortunately. I'd intended to finish the assault squad by the end of the month, but work has been crazy, so all I've gotten done is initial conversion work on three pairs of legs and three torsos (counting the pair of legs in the photo at the top of the thread). The legs all have two layers of .020" plasticard added to the top of the thigh and the middle of the shin, the torsos have the chest and "gut" separated, and I'm still experimenting with how to finish them out. In particular, though, I'm struggling with the Mk8 "collar". I'm trying to match this bit of artwork, where the collar goes all the way around. Any suggestions? Karitas
The special weapon sprue has a torso with an "all round" collar, that the sergeant in my avatar is sporting, it seemed to me the best basis for a mk 8 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/162725-my-first-space-marine/#findComment-1933485 Share on other sites

I'd use it, but I really need to master adding the collar, since I'm planning to do my whole army in Mk8 armour. Fausto2071
plasticard~theres a tutorial for making the mk.8 armor in the librarium~i think the 1.mm plasticard they suggest is a little too unwieldy though Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/162725-my-first-space-marine/#findComment-1933888 Share on other sites
AdeptusDavidus
1mm is probably far too much, yeah. I've got some .020" (.5mm), .010" (.25mm), and .005" (.13mm), though. The .005" is what I tried first, but it's a bit on the springy side. I might just try cutting little squares of it and arranging them around the collar to serve as an armature for a smidge of greenstuff.
