Well, the FW landraider finally landed a few days ago so I cracked on and made a start on the Army, a few elements were already in place of course such as the Titan and Dreadnought but I have a few troops and heroes to add. I have initially planned this as a small support force for the Crimson Ultrawings

As I said I have initially planned this as a small support force, saying that the Crimsons started life as a 'small skirmish force' so who knows where it may end up <rolls eyes>

Anyhow, pics below, raider just finished, DN and Titan done a while back of course but will stick em all here to remain coherent, looking forward to an army shot when its all done!

Bagged the DN second hand from ebay, saved a few pennies on the RRP and it was already assembled and undercoated to boot....bonus!

Lot of you are already familiar with 'Gloria' more pics here big stuff bottom right of page

To be honest the main reason I am doing this army is because I think an Army shot when its all done with the backdrop of the titan will look cool! oh and poor Gloria was getting lonely...

The digi pics dont really do the metallics justice, they are much richer in natural light, heres a quick pic, will get some army shots when the rest of the dudes are done

Ive just realized, the titan is a converted armorcast reaver.

It is a converted reaver but it's made of card from the excellent plans that lackof provides, cheap as chips!

how? TELL ME NOW I NEED TO KNOW!

Did this quick guide on the paint technique over on another forum so here is a quick cut n paste...hope it helps :P

For those that asked, the templates are for a straight reaver Titan so you will have to convert things over your good selfs, there are plenty of pics of my approach on the main webpage Gloria

Oh, the technique below is used both on vehicles and the Titan, only difference is the Titan was left 'Shiny' .no varnish stage

Glad you like em chaps, trying to keep it all retro and classic.

The metallic effect is sooooo simple, the digi pics don't really do it justice as its much richer in natural light, here's a half way pic, will get plenty of army shots in natural light when everything is done.

A lot of peeps think the colours are done using a Non Metallic Metal effect but they are in fact metallics! Never strictly been a fan of straight NMM's they just look too tasty, like caramel chocolate, I just want to sit and lick em rather than play games with em....

This technique gives the look but offers a certain depth and richness as well as a slight sheen which still gives things that metal look, here goes..

I should mention that the following techniques use very basic airbrush skills, basically if you can point the right end at the model, your sorted ;)

1. Undercoat the model with black primer

2. give it a good going over with the primary colour, Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey, I generally thin 50/50 with tamiya thinners (just top a new pot up to the top with thinners and give a good shake/stir)

3. Once that is dry highlight the model with miniature paints SILVER 92, again thinned for the airbrush. This is the fun bit and I cant really offer any advice except keep practicing, as you gain experience you should learn where to highlight and lay down colour. It's not always the logical places where light and shade SHOULD be, but more where it looks and feels RIGHT. This landraider literally took me half an hour from the black undercoat stage to finish to the next step!

4. final stages are basically adding the details by brush, a thin line of GW Mithril silver was added along some of the edges to bring them out a little more, you will find it is a tiny touch lighter than the Silver 92 so it works well.

5. Now, here's the real secret, it's all in the varnish. give the models a good coat of quick drying GLOSS varnish to give it a little resilience against handling. once dry its at this stage you need to add any transfers. Now the secret ingredients, grab yourself a MATT varnish made by a company called RAILMATCH, I use the aerosols (#1407) so cant vouch for the potted stuff they do. Give the model a good going over and leave to dry for AT LEAST a couple of days. It takes long to harden off but this stuff REALLY brings out the richness of the colours and can convert a fantastic paint job into a bloody fantastic paint job, trust uncle Bully, I have been using it for years!

Smallest thing I have tried this method on to date is the Dreadnought so not really sure how it will work on troopers but in the interest of speed-painting I have some on their way and will certainly be trying it!

Really chaps that's all it takes! 2 maybe 3 colours and your well on the way!

Hope this helps a little, if it does, remember my website, dig deep and throw a few pennies my way for sharing my secrets (details on the home page), it's getting more expensive by the day to keep running and I don't want to go down the road of having to knock it on the head as sharing is so much fun ;D

My reaction to this thread:

"Oh look, a GK LRC. That's pretty cool."

"GK Dreadnought, very nice. Forgeworld stuff is cool!"

*sound of jaw hitting floor*

Really looking forward to see what else you do! Your metallics are amazing!

I've always wondered if you were going to do a full army after building the beautifully done titan. Good airbrush technique on the LR and Dread. Nice clean paint jobs as usual. You are a hobby winner, thats for sure.

;)

I looked because of the thread title and glad I did!! The word 'sweetsugaryJesus'sholygoldennipplesthat'sunbeleivablyawesome' don't quiet convey the sheer awe I am currently in. Damn, I wish I could do to that what I wish I could do to Daemonettes....

(If you hadn't guessed I like!!)
