Spirit Marines

Recommended Posts

I plan to paint up my chaos marines as the spirits of the dead to match up with my interesting fluff, the damned souls of dead traitors, risen by tzeentch's might and wisdom to wreak revenge upon all those who still remain loyal to the false emperor. They are going to be a mix of different chaos units all painted in a ghostly shade of blues and greens to represent the risen souls of chaos. i put this here to get some feed back on a test model i did, note this is a loyalist marine and thus lacking the exceptional detail of the chaos armor, so without further adu i give you my test scheme:

i achieved this scheme in the following techniques:

base coat of black

1) paint on regal blue

2) heavy drybrush of enchanted blue

3) light drybrush of ice blue (or 1:1 enchanted blue:skull white which ever i have handy)

4) "Inked" in VERY watered down Dark Angles green

5) final highlight of skull white drybrush on tips of the model

my main question to you is, should i keep the green or swap to a watered down dark blue wash?

and when should i highlight, before the "ink" or after?

oh and C&C is always welcomed, as usual

I think right now, the blue/green combo looks sort of like oxidized copper. Kinda rusted in the way the Statue of Liberty is.

I say you should stay away from the green, as that really makes it look like that once you combine it with blue. Stick with one or the other.

I do like the idea a lot though; it's an interesting concept. I've rarely seen it done with non-robed figures though, which may be a little tough.

yeah thats what i was figuring on doing, if i stuck with one color it might look better than the green too, any opinion on when i should do the white highlights? before or after inking (incase anyone is wondering, i got the idea for inking them after works from the tutorial's section it actually seems to give them some depth and fills in the details)

By the powers of chaos! i declare this thread, ALIVE!

Update:

i finally got around to painting my first 2 squads in Ghost colors, i made them look kinda like the LotR army of the dead, tell me what you think, ghostly enough?

i promise the whit makes them much paler IRL than these picks do them justice, i think i need some natural lighting to capture the real colors of them

Much, much better than before. I can see how you copied the LoTR Undead ghosties paintjob, very nice execution. My only gripe is the red "runes" on the pads and guards. They sort of dumb down the whole spooky, etherial, warp-ghost factor. Maybe using some extremly bright greens and yellows like Scorpion Green and Sunburst with small highlights of Skull White. Make some smokey, spiderwebbed effects along the edges to blend them in... like they're warping/appearing and disappearing back into their armor. Very nice job, dude. Keep up the great work!

I concur.
