Dreadnought

I was getting bored with painting the ordinary tactical Marines for my slowly-developing army and decided to get a more interesting, centrepiece-type model to keep myself busy with and also on which to vent some of my painting urges. I opted for a Dreadnought* since it seemed to be the most useful one for my army, not to mention the coolest and most characterful of the Space Marines' war machines.

I really wanted a model where I could pull out all the stops and not have to hold myself back on due to the fact that I'll need to paint another ten of them. Something that I can paint to the best of my ability. So, after owning it for a week, here is my army's Dreadnought as it stands now:

That's right, I've finished one leg. I figured that since it's going to take me so long to finish painting the thing, it might be worth creating a WiP thread. This way people can watch the model's progress and offer their comments and criticisms in the mean time.

So on that note, if you have any thoughts or questions, please don't hesitate to share!

~ Thanks.

* The standard kind, that is. I personally think the Venerable ones look a little corny, but each to their own.

Thanks so much for the support, everybody.

Here's an update for you all:

The legs are almost finished. I just need to add wear to one of the hip joints and, for lack of a better word, the 'Nought's pubic region. I'm also torn whether to paint the hoses between its legs a metallic colour or to leave them black. So far I'm pretty happy with it, though later on when I've finished the body and it's all glued together, I'll probably go back and re-work some of the stains and chips on the legs.

Since the initial post I've spent time, obviously, putting together the body and the assault canon arm, trying to fill in gaps as best I can. Obviously, I'm still yet to smooth off some of the epoxy puty on the arm and there's still some mould lines that need attention. The left arm isn't even glued together yet.

I spent a number of hours base-coating the body in a number of thin layers of Mechrite Red, trying to get as complete and even a coverage as I could. Although probably the most tedious part of painting, I think it's the most important in making a model look good. The next step is to put on some washes and then begin highlighting the red.

So until next time, if you have any thoughts or questions, as usual please me know.

~Thanks.

I'm really impressed with your weathering style. Not just scratches, but nice wear and tear, some rust and oil and dust over that.

Red is quite difficult to weather IMO, would you mind sharing your how-to-fu?

I second that. I also find it difficult to weather red and I never seem to get it right. So plz share your recipe :P
