Imperial Fist Veteran Sergeant

Recommended Posts

Day two of my days off, and despite the new mini dropping through the letter box I managed to stay focussed on this one! I now have my next two projects lined up :P. More on them at a later date though, suffice to say that the Crimson Fists have attracted my attention...

Anyways back on topic, thanks Corus Belial although if you like it now, you'll love it when it's highlighted :).

Todays photos don't reveal all that much more although the red has had it's second and third layers, and I've basecoated all the silver areas. In the case of the back pack, bolt pistol, garter and crux terminatus chain they've been washed with Badab Black to shade as well. The sword blade will recive different treatment. Next up, the gold details and the purity seals...

As I'm sure you'll notice from the photos there are some areas of the yellow that still need some work, this will be ongoing until the mini is done. Regretably my hands aren't always the steadiest and I usually slip at the worst moment.

any who, comments or criticisms most welcome, more shall follow tomorrow.

James

Thanks youthminister40k hopefully you'll like the finished mini as well, although that's a little way off yet ;). So another day and a little more progress... pretty much what I said I'd do yesterday. The gold bits have had the first couple of layers, the reds have been highlighted and the purity seals have the first layers on them as well. Oh and the ammo pouches on the belt are ready for highlighting.

Now a question for everyone, do I go for white or silver rims on the shoulder pads to signify the first company? I'm not sure so please let me know what you think along with any other comments or criticism.

James

@ theredcorsair: thanks mate :)

@ RazakelXIII: Glad someone noticed my question at the bottom there... I was thinking white too, so white it is then. On the yellow, I'm glad everyone likes it although I must tip my hat to Chaos Bunny Studios for the idea :).

Double post I'm afraid... Lack of Interest isn't going to put me off though as I'm going to try and finish this mini before I start on my stuff for Call of the Imperium, and there's not much left to go now :P. The armour is highlighted, so all that really remains is general tidying up, highlighting the bolt pistol, the writing on the purity seals, the edges of the shoulder pad rims need a final highlight of white and the blade of the sword needs finishing. Then last but not least, the markings need to go on the shoulder pads, I'm not sure what they'll be yet though.

With a little luck I'll be able to get some painting done at some point in the next few days... hmm, painting in lunch hours again?

as usual, c&c is welcomed,

James

Just spotted this one, James.

1st of all the kitbash works really well. He looks unhurried and confident, which is just right for an Imperial bananaman.

2nd the paint job has come together really well, and using Wil's "tutorial" for the Fists is a great basis to work from.

I don't know if you have it planned (sorry if I've skim read anything), but a white stripe to the helm would really pull the white rims together into the model and "justify" using them the more usual black rims.

The horizontal blade allows you to create a reflective effect on the sword - I would suggest some thinned blue wash mixed with some black wash to the lower sides. Maybe do it after the highlights to tie them in and not look too stark.

A bit of sepia wash on the seals always works, and devlan mud, applied carefully, helps with shading and making his feet a bit grubby if you go for a not completely clean model...

Other than that, great looking model, and I may have to yoink that pose... :)

Cheers ;)

@PeteyTheBear: Thanks Petey. I've only recently refined my 'red' skills so I'm glad I've pulled it off on this mini :).

@Iacton: I'm flattered to recieve such praise from a master like yourself. Firstly, I'm glad you like the paintjob. Having given it a trial run on the Scout, I figured I'd try a marine in full plate, and I'm really happy with the way it's turned out. If only I had the self discipline to paint loads of them... (still with the 'Call' in progress from next week I'm hoping to actally have some semblance of an 'army' soon).

With regard to your second point, I have been entertaining the idea of the white stripe on the helm, so I think I'll go ahead and do it. Incidentally, I must say I've been admiring your Heresy-era Imperial Bananaman :) Veteran mini and even trying to work out what I can use the 'predator' pattern helmet on (although I was thinking of calling it the mark vii assault pattern helmet).

The parchment will be getting a light glaze of dark flesh once the text is in place, just to round them off and age them a little. If I can pull it off, he'll have a nice shiny reflective sword :P.

As for weathering, I'm always afraid I'll go too far and wreck the mini, so until I have time knock up a couple of practice mini's/components I'll be sticking to squeaky clean, fresh from the armourer looking Astartes....

James

Word of advice. Don't put script on the parchment :eek

You can get a nice faded, or even burnt look to the strips, but unless you've got the thinnest finest freehand brush and a grip of steel, then generally it looks pap.

I try to avoid it where possible myself nowadays :P

The good thing about weathering generally is that a little is much better than a lot :D

Thanks Peakey. I'm not sure about mastered, but I'm getting the hang of it. Tell your friend if he has access to the internet to check out this site Chaos Bunny Studios Imperial Fists Tutorial this is where I go my inspiration ;).

James

Alright buddy, he has really come along since i last had a look at him! That pose is spot on, i really like that mini as it can be used for so many other things because of the lack of arms. Keep painting, and get it finished so we can see your next project! :P
