My take on Grimtuff's Dognought

i like it

im making one out of the aobr dread (its much smaller than yours)

but i only have2 feet, any ideas for what i could use other than sentinel feet?

If you look at Grimtuff's and mine in the early stages the biggest problem is having the feet sat correctly on whatever surface they are standing on - the dreadnought feet are naturally angled so it is realy hard to get it to look right. I would suggest waiting until you have the money to get a sentinel or two or put a lot of thought into the base. The only other alternative is scratch build them, or maybe try Warhorse47's suggestion if you can find them in the right size for the right money

Wishing you luck on your build. Will you be posting a W.I.P??

you know what might work? is a fenrisian wolf standing with him on the base...purely aestetical of course, but it might help bring out the wolf from him,

I carved up two wolf models and gs'ed the gaps, took the opportunity to change the wolf's head angle so the whole wolf appears more fluid - no longer in a straight line and more natural. It's not stuck down at the moment so I can paint it seperately but I think that was an inspired idea and like the look. Keeps well with the idea of a SW taken over by the wulfen and being a loner - the only one who fully knows him is the wolf - true kinship (have I taken this too far??). I've also added a few details like searchlight, tubing on the legs and a couple of other wolfy bits including the marine's chest emblem on the front right leg. I've also made up the assault cannons which now give me AC, MM, TLLC, HF and HB weapon choices, all magnatised.

I have also been looking around it's body and trying to place some pelts without them getting in the way of joints or weapons doesn't seem to leave many places to put them. I might try on the center section but don't want to make the whole thing too busy.

As for dead thousand sons or DA, I may squish some DA underfoot

As always, C&Cs are more than welcome

I like it, the whole thing looks very streamlined, and I think it looks amazing. One thing I noticed though is that in the image with two assault cannons, that the one on what would be the models right is larger than the one on the models left. Is there any particular reason you did that?

Greetings to all my fellow brothers.

I have a small update based on you suggestions, so credit where credit is due

and the wolf, but do cut out the connecting part between the 2 fangs, is a shame to put so mutch work in that wolf and not fixing his teeth

Done - and your'e right, it looks a whole lot better. I knew they didn't quite look right but I have always just accepted that as part of the model, I had never considered giving them dental so thanks for the nudge in the right direction

I keep looking at it's feat, and I think it needs some claws!

Done. This was a pain in the butt to achieve but got there in the end. I have also been wondering about that and even considered getting some 'nids just to carve the claws off, but I think this has worked quite well. Again, thanks for pushing me that bit further

Worry not. They are both the same size, it's just a optical trick that comes about when you use 'macro' so close

Lastly, I made some leg armour using a Landraider weapon sponson shield. I must be honest here, I spent roughly two hours trying to make some from my bits box but couldn't get things to look O.K with the parts I had available, so I finally decided to sacrifice one from my new unbuilt landraider kit - all in the name of Russ you understand :)

I cut one in half length wise and proceded to cut it to shape. Topped it with some styrene sheet, filed it flush once the glue had dried then added some punched rivets for detail

Now on to finishing the base with some squished DAs

gawd, it looks absolutely badass. I still maintain that I would like to see a bit more substantial of a tail, as tails are nature's counterweight for the four-leggers out there, and yours would end up being a bit front heavy. But again, that's just my $0.02 and overall I absolutely love this dude, and it's a shame you arent mass producing them for comission :P

may be worth a gander. the tail is nice and long (couple inches if memory serves) and the shoulders could be used as armor plates towards the rump. Again, just a thought.

  • 2 months later...

I know it's been a while since much happened to the beast but I have been on vacation with the family. You would not believe how much you need to go camping with when you have five young pups to ecucate in the ways of nature (and a wife that insisted on taking her hair straightners)

So finally I have managed to steal a bit of modeling time. Following O.I.Ds suggestion of the Wraith for a tail I got one of the the internet and set about making it fit.

I cut off all the prongs and the end spikey bits and filed then to an almost round shape. As the tail is thicker at one end I decided to keep the sort of oval shape of the tail to help it look slightly more organic (on a machine?!?!) then just stightly flattened the sides of the end tail link that would be attatched to the body so it would fit inbetween the stubs on the rear of the Sentinel Torso - I hope that makes sense, pics should help.

Lastly, I don't know when this will get painted. i have a serious cash-flow problem and I do want to get some thousand Sons for the base, then the whole thing can get undercoated at one time. Anyway, I need to finish my WGBL for the Great Hunt

Enjoy

That tail worked perfectly, good call O.I.D. It's been fun to see this beast evolve from all the constructive criticism in this thread. What an awesome forum, I'm used to spiteful jealous comments being the order of the day on threads like these. Can't wait to see this guy painted up ;)

The only relatively minor critique I have to offer is the placement of the Wolf Head icon on the body. Instead of the ribcage area I think I would've gone for something more visible like the shoulder or hip armor plate. Those icons are meant, IMO, to advertise "who is bringing the terror and destruction unto thee" and I just don't get that feeling from it being relatively hidden at it's current placement. The tail looks like an extension of the overall much like an enormous scale servo skull. Good fit. Not sure I would "fuzzy" it up if it were up to me, though maybe just a tad long. Looks a bit more "panther" or other large breed cat than servo/mechanical wolf. I might clip a few links to shorten it if it were mine.

I LOVE the twin AC's immensely. I might've found a way to place the ejection ports more visibly (sides rather than rear facing) but again a very minor thing. Would rather have the spent casings ejected laterally than toward the joints and such where they may get caught up and restrict movement and such.

Overall I love this concept and manifestation and have enjoyed watching it's progression. Can't wait for it to be finished and see the final pictures.

Thanks for the comments, keep them coming. As I have mentioned before I find them very helpful in my modeling as quite often someone will spot a problem or have a new way of seeing something - all good!!

As for the shell ejection ports they are at about 30 degrees from the center line, this should through them well clear of moving parts. I will try to get an overhead pic to post in the next few days. I also understand the comment about the wolf head emblems - more pondering time.

The tail is presenting me with some issues. First off is the shape. A real wolf tail comes straight off the spine and is shorter compared to say a Whippet or Greyhound but looking at wolf skeletons on the net they still come down almost to the ground - the bulk of a wolf's tail shape is fur making it look bigger than a domestic dog. The bone structure is similar to all canines and maybe I could be better infer that by blending two links into one with a bit of gs or milliput. I still have the rest of the wraith and I am now pondering using the tail section that comes straight from the necrons torso, it's thicker and shorter but this will have to wait for a few days until I get some time to carve it up.

The second problem is making something the shape of a wolf's tail for something that is basically a non-organic robtic coffin, it needs to be mechanical in nature like the rest of the Dread and very flexable. At the moment I can't quite visualise anything that won't end up looking in some way like a rat's tail even if I blend two links together so if anyone has an eye for drawing or design then please feel free to contibute

Thanks again for all the C&Cs - DGC

Perhaps keep the ridges on it that come with the wrait, and maybe even expand them out to the side to look more like vertibrae. That way it wont look like a coil of metal, but rather a metalic spine. I think maybe you could even make the vertibrae larger by blending the two links together and extending the crests. It will be a bit of work, but it should look a little more canine i think?
