Alpha Legion

By armor i think he means how many tanks they used. I think the alpha legion didnt use to many vehicles as they were a stealthy chapter, you can maybe use drop pods as a way to show their rapid insertion and maybe 1 tank.

As for the operatives i dont know, Dorn has a pretty good idea though.

Hmmm... this one's tough. The Alpha Legion have traditionally been a sneaky, infiltate-y force which would seem to suggest limited armour.

However, the Legion novel suggests that they were a more flexible force capable of deploying whatever was necessary to combat the enemy.

My gut feeling would remain for a light to heavy infantry force, backed by DS TDA and close support forces. Lots of Tacticals, lots of scouts. Also, I would go for a veteran heavy style owing to the elite and self contained nature of the army.

Ive got a Pre heresy Alpha legion force built up to over 3000pts, in keeping with them being a Legion first and Ninjas second it involves most of the various units from the Marine codex, with an Emphasis on Tactical and Assault marines (Without Jump Packs). Using the Tempus Fugitives campaign rules they replace Combat Tactics with infiltrate and get various characters to dish out Stealth amongst them.

Theres a couple of pictures in the gallery above, and a plog on Warseer and Ammobunker if you wanted to look directly...

Great idea for using 'scouts' as operatives.

As for modelling them, what kind of theme do you have running through the rest of your army? Remember that the operatives would have disguised themselves as natives as much as possible - so for a desert world, you might try face scarves or long robes. For an ice world, very thick clothing and furs. Essentially, these guys should not look like combatants until they pull a bolt pistol out of their pants!

As has been said, for the rest of your army I would say rapid insertion is the key - lots of fast attack stuff (with tactical marines all using rhinos) that would in theory be making use of the intelligence the operatives have gathered for a lightning strike. No doubt they would also have 'heavy stuff' hidden away in caves or forests nearby though, for when it is needed, so it would make sense to have that kind of stuff in your force as well!

One other thing that was very clear to me from "Legion", is that their tactical squads can teleport. In fact you could probably make the argument that they are quite good with a teleporter because it seems to be no big deal. Perhaps this is just a reflection of the technology being more solid back then, but it would be a very interesting twist to an AL force.

Well, arguably if you're fighting orcs the whole 'infiltrate and observe' ethos of the Alpha Legion would go completely out of the window. For obvious reasons that would only work in human or human proxy societies - Can't see the marines willing to green themselves up and don hair-squigs in any case <_<
