ChainsawDR
Hi all, I've got one of those 3 tier foam carry cases from GW that I use to transport all my troops/infantry models, and I've ripped holes in some of the foam dividers to fit in a couple of Dreds. However I've got quite a few tanks and other large models that I'm struggling to store. I've thought about buying another 3 tier case for them, but it seems like a bit of a waste of money when you consider how much foam has to be ripped out, how many you can fit in there, and how much these cases cost. I've got a few "normal tool cases" - ie no foam, just the odd plastic divider that I can rip/cut out if needed - that's currently got a few tanks and polystyrene balls in, but nothng is secured and some if its gonna get broken soon unless I secure them properly. I don't really know where (in the UK) to get cheap foam from. I was wondering if anyone had any unique or interesting methods of storing/transporting their bulky/oddly-shaped/large models? I've been toying with the idea of glueing some string or an elastic band and a fastener to the inside casing, and then tie it over the tank and wrap the string around the fastener (in the same way some window blinds operate - when you pull the string the blinds come up, you then tie the string around something to stop it being pulled back in and the blinds coming down again). I don't really take them out much at the moment, I'm more worried about my mrs picking up my boxes and cases and chucking them across the room whilst she's searching for clothes or shoes. Any tips, tricks, advice etc would be a great help. thanks all. stinkenheim
not really a way i transport models for me, but when i've sold stuff on ebay i usually get some polystyrene and use a hot wire cutter to cut out a hole that th model will fit in, if you wrap the model in a bit of bubble wrap before putting it in the hole it should be more than adequate... andy Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163394-advice-on-transporting-tanks/#findComment-1920536 Share on other sites
Scott-S6
I transport my rhino variants in a cheap rifle case (double rifle, un-scoped - £25). I get 16 rhino variants in there (5xRB,4xRH,3xPR,2xWH,2xVI) with no problems at all using the original egg crate. It's firm enough to keep them in place but not so firm as to crush them (even the whirlwinds) For other vehicles I made a case from heavy mount board and duct tape. That one's got 3xLR, 2xDP, 4xLS, 2xdread. If you want foam, find somewhere that does upholstery and ask if you can raid their off-cuts. I get all I can carry for £1. Ra1stl1n
I bought my case and trays from this one on ebay http://www.kaiserrushforth.com/ and it turned out really really well... i can fit all my packs 2 land raiders and a couple of rhino chassi tanks in one and its quite good (although i must admit putting the vindi with the raiders is a bit of a problem :)) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163394-advice-on-transporting-tanks/#findComment-1920547 Share on other sites
DGC
NO no no - don't put your models in the hands of fate I use a company in the U.K called Kaiserrushforth, they make the the K.R multi-case (in metal or heavy card) which is a great alternative to the ones G.W make. They also sell the foam trays seperately in a huge variety of styles, sizes and thicknesses so you should be able to find replacement foam for the cases you use. Here's a link http://www.kaiserrushforth.com/ plus they also sell on eBay Hope this helps DGC Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163394-advice-on-transporting-tanks/#findComment-1920549 Share on other sites
Wolf Guard Hengist
I use the Figures in Comfort stuff, for tanks I use the Large 3 thick Foam tray and cut a shape out allows me to stack my tanks sideways. I can get 3 Rhinos in one tray that way and if any tank has turrets I make a seperate slot in another tray. newskull
My missus picked me up a Sabol case and inserts for Christmas, apparently because she was tired of me keeping so many newspapers and shoe boxes in the spare room. I suffered a bit finding the right depths of foam inserts and it took some time to get satisfied with cutting the foam up, but overall I think the price to convenience ratio on those bags is pretty great. Also, the softness of the bag allows me to carry it easily on my bicycle, which is great. The Sabol cases don't work nearly as well for my Tyranid models, if that's a concern, but the comparative uniformity of my wolves and their tanks is what they're made for. ChainsawDR
Cheers for the answers guys, and when I find work I think I'll go for one of them, at the moment its a little out of my price range (going DIY style!) Has anyone ever tried cutting and glueing sponges together? Does it work? Grey Mage
Pistol Cases... you can get them from walmart for about 15 bucks, holds a pair of landraiders and a couple squads a peice... or three rhino/predator sized tanks and a couple squads. Good stuff. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163394-advice-on-transporting-tanks/#findComment-1920803 Share on other sites
Vassakov
I've got a standard GW case (well, the toolkit case. It's actually great for larger minis too thanks to the three square holes in the bottom) and a GW army case. I've also got a standard toolcase which I have padded with the foam I've removed from the modular GW case. That fits a LR chassis plus 5 Rhino Chassis. WG Vrox
On the cheap. If you know any construction employeed people ask them about the hard cases their power tools come in, usually there is a few discarded cases or cases of tools that have broken. They are very nice hard plastic cases that lock well, just add some foam and away you go. bigger the tool the better such as skill saws and Saws all. Another place to check out are pawn shops for these cases. alot of times they get tools that are defective and left with only a case. If I ever had to carry my army and fly somewhere, I think I would freak out about any soft case getting checked for baggage. If it was a hard case I wouldn't worry as much. I used to use rifle cases but the looks I get from people seeing me go into buildings, I feel like they are ready to call 911 any second, so I only use those for at home storage now. WG Vrox. ChainsawDR
lol, yeah I think I'll avoid that - and I wouldn't have a clue where to get a rifle or pistol case as the weapons aren't legal in the UK. I've got a spare tool case so I think I'll go down that route and try and get some foam offcuts on the cheap as suggested earlier - if that fails I'll have a go at cutting and glueing some cheap sponges together for padding. Thanks for all your help brothers, ales are in the corner. I love how in the US you could can go down to Wal*Mart and pick one up for next to nothing. Oh how I wish my wife would agree to live in America....... Grey Mage
Well remember that if you outlaw catapults only outlaws will have catapults.... *spreads hands*. So gun cases are outlawed aswell? The things are drattedly useful Ive found.... cheap way to get a padded case. Or are they just unavailable since so few people have guns? Keercrevlis
Well what I use for my entire SW army is a 50mm ammo box. It is 17'lx14"dx7.5"w. It's great for using the 7.5"x13" foam & has room for a 3"-4"piece of foam to stand vertical at one end. I use a 4" piece to hold Leman Russ EX & RB, 3" foam for all other tanks. 2" foam for mini's as I like to store mine standing up instead of laying them down. My army is about 2500pts so the box holds alot. Here I can buy one for about $10-12 bucks plus the cost of foam. WG Vrox
Never considered the ammo box, think I might make a trip down to the ol surplus store. I notice there are 2 kinds the FAT 50 which is 50mm and the normal 50cal one. Which one is better for the standard foam? Rifle/shotgun cases are cheap and easy to get in the UK. Try sportsman's warehouse, for example. Hard pistol cases are less common - we tend to favour soft cases it seems and these are no good for models at all. G. A. K.
That reminds me of a story one of my fellow gaming friends told about getting pulled over for speeding on his way to a tournament... Things got very interesting for a few minutes when the cop saw all those gun cases in his backseat.
