10 DW Ven Dreads soon to be 15

Hi guys this is my first WIP attempt. Seeking my own 25000 point Apoc DA Army I'm currently working on the DW Dreads.

Basicly 3X PC CCW Flamer, 3X AssC CCW SB, 3X MM CCW SB, and a Mortis w/TLAC

The start,

As I was assembling I discovered that the weapons from the various GW/FW productions didn't fit well at all. So I decided to magnetize. Which exposed some problems.

First I just thought I'd slap a magnet on the arm post and shove one in the hole of the weapon, but found there were inconsistencies of depth and the weapon didn't hold well. So I decided another tactic.

Off with the post,

Simple to remove, but I didn't like the idea of just putting the magnet on the side so I decided to extend the shoulder with 2 #10 washers. Fill them with GS let it dry drill a 1/8" hole.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/PEDDreadWIP020.jpg

And super glue the magnet in.

Next to fill the holes on the weapons, let dry drill and superglue magnets.

The washers were a good move for the Chapi Ven dread as the tollerance between the weapon and wings was too close.

And I like the broader stance the normal dreads get with the extension.

Phase one is done, I still have some filing and sanding to get the fits right, lots of GS/SG clumped on the surfaces.

Am going to take a break here, am still waiting on 5 more Dreads from FW. I'll get them to this stage then move on.

I have 5 dreads finished and a 6th that needs to be completed. Please do not lure me down this path, I fear you are treading where angels (Dark or otherwise) fear to go. :tu:

I am assuming that they will all arrive on the table in drop pods?

Thanx for the tip on the washers. I have a chappie dread as well and I plan on giving him multiple weapon options.

Cheers,

I have four (OK I'm a slacker B)) – but the temptation for more is great I'll admit as they're excellent models. Go for it pueriexdeus, I can't wait to see 'em all lined up.

Cheers

For the price of 10 dreads you could have bought a titan... :)

But 10 finished DW dreads will be a rad thing to see.

I'm guessing from the first picture that he bought a lot of black reach dreads which would have cut the cost significantly.

They look good though, can't wait to see them all painted up!

Master Toddius; Your right I could maybe have bought a Titan, but I've already got one. So next year? Two Wolfhounds to go with the Reaver??? Not sure, I've still got to start assembly on my THawk.

bztn; I did get 7 of them on ebay, 5 AoBR, so they weren't that pricey. Speaking of pricy, doing a cost analysis of GW dreads compared to the 6 FW, 3 are DA Ven, Chapi Ven, standard Ven. FW is coming in cheaper about 15%, includin S&H. Go figure.

Cathar the Great; I do plan on some personality, I've a collection of DA icony bits, and FW DA brass etchings. Once the 5 I'm waiting on from FW get to this stage I'll start looking at who is going to look how. I plan on 1 leader in each squadron of three, so that one will get most of the luv. BTW they will be primarly in Pre Heresy Black, that's how my DIY DA, DW are.

Honda; Yep I've 10 DP's in a box waiting to be detailed out. Not GW/FW, but homemade, I've a friend that plays a DP Salli army who made them for me. Not as detailed as FW/GW, but you know exactly what they are when you see them. Oh the path beckons.

Still waiting on the last 5 from FW to show up. I'll post pics when I get them assembled.

I've done something similar, but I think the washers are too big. That's a big space between the weapons and the body.

What I did was take a dremel or junior hacksaw and cut half of the shoulder joint (the nubby that goes INTO the weapon) off.

At this point, I took a small ball of greenstuff & placed it inside the weapons recess. Then I took the magnet, pushed it down into the weapon recess (just a little bit) and then lined up the shoulder nubby to the weapon recess. I then PUSHED the weapon onto the shoulder.

This has the effect of pushing the magnet down into the weapon, and still remained in contact with the shoulder nub. this will make excellent contact between the magnet as well as the material I'm sticking it to. Remove the weapon & let it dry.

That said, I then took a small (17 gauge x 1inch) nail and pushed it through a hole I drilled in said nubby. Importantly, I left the head of the nail on the INSIDE of the dred, and cutoff the excess from the point down to the cut off nubby. I applied superglue to the nail head, inside of the shoulder, just to hold it in place.

So, I have 1/2 a nub, that will still fit into the weapon. This acts as both a pivot point (so the arms line up properly EVERY time) as well as partial weight bearing. But because it's still just 1/2 a nub, it leaves room for the magnet, and still rotates freely enough when I have an inkling to move it. And since I only used one magnet and a steel nail, then I don't have to worry about polarity when switching or adding guns.

And probably most importantly, the dred still LOOKS stock, and I don't have any gigantic spaces between the body and the arms.

I'll post pics if I get a chance. Questions/comments/suggestions welcome.

Tomorrow I'll start the painting.

I do plan on getting 5 more Deads. Three to replace the FW DA/Chappi/Ven Dreads in their sections. The other two will be Tech Dreads loaded up with servo arms and stuff.

I've decided to make the DA/Dread the Dread Master, the Chappi will be, the Chappi. and the FW/Ven dread will be the Librarian. I've a FW/GN DCCW coming for him, it looks more Force weaponish. Oh I've also several FW-DCCW's to kit out three Furioso types.

I 'll be starting with the AA section first and work my way through the rest of them one section at a time, it'll give me tho opportunity to upgrade my painting skills.

Stay tuned.

i thought you couldn't take the mortis pattern HB anymore? seeing as only the autocannon mortis pattern was listed in the new SM codex?

other than that, good luck!

I'm back.

Sorry this has taken so long to get back to. but here is where I am now.

If you recall I am working the dreads in section.

First is the TLC/ML section:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1024.jpg

Next is the Mortis section:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1006.jpg

Two TLAC's

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1011.jpg

And the TLHB:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1013.jpg

Here are the Top 3: DA Ven as the Commander, Ven Chappi, and a FW Ven to be the Libbie.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1019.jpg

The commander I've decided to load out in two different ways:

Furioso, just becaus it look so cool.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1015.jpg

And Ass Cannon:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1016.jpg

Chappie w/PC-DCCW:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1017.jpg

And the Libbe w/MM-GKDCCW:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/pueriexdeus/IMG_1018.jpg

Besides the Top 3, I've still 2xPC Dreads, 2xAssc Dreads, and 2x MM Dreads to get on with. And I cant forget the MoTF and 10 DP's to do.

Next I think I'll start on the two PC-DCWW Dreads that will be teamed with the Chappi.

Once I'm done painting I'll get to the basing.

So... if you have a squad of ten dreadnoughts they get combat tactics, right?

Add shrike for fleety deads?

I'm not sure, but it's a thought. I'll need to look into it, but then I'm not sure if it would benefit the Dreads.

Needless to say you're nuts. Good work!

I know some people play Apocalypse and there may be a ten dreadnought force, but in regular 40K how many force org charts do you need to field them all? I'm a chaos guy so I have three assembled, converted, Nurgle dreads and one of the first things I did in the new codex was run them all, along with three beasts of Nurgle and randomness ensued.

I have a fourth FW dread but I keep putting off painting and assembling it for other projects. It will be painted for my Nefarious Fire CSM. I've always been a believer in the dread. I had a couple for my Rogue Trader Orks. Apparentl those figs were first released in 1987, amongst the oldest GW figs I have by sculpt date.

Orks are getting the Big Dread from Forgeworld, but before I unleash the Waaaggh I have one more CSM army list, probably two at 1500 points I want to convert and paint and then I plan on doing a Servants of Decay army at 1500 points than boosting it to a lot more.

So much painting to do, I'm better at typing online. Fear my web empire!

Good work again.

It looks like you clipped off the banners that hang down the front on either side of the sarcophagus. I have a FW DA Ven Dn as well and find these to be a bit of a pain (also cause me anxiety since I am sure they will break eventually). Did you have a hard time removing them? Is there a secret to it? I am thinking about removing them from my DA Dn as they do not appeal and avoid breakage.

Commander Remiel:

Actually I haven't even gotten to applying them to the model yet. Though your right they do look like something ready to be broken. Because of that I'm rethinking the storage/transportation medium to be used. Have thought of leaving them off, but they really do make the Dread more unique.
