Pre-heresy World Eaters WIP

Recommended Posts

i usually never post or read warhammer blogs/sites so this is a first. Please forgive me if i dont use proper names or forum ettiquete. little bit: used to play warhammer in elementary/early highschool, quit because of work/college/gf, college done, got 2 boxes of blood claws for christmas from a terrible terrible friend who i curse for bringing me back... and there you have it, a Preheresy World Eater army. Taking a lot of inspiration from the Khârn the Betrayer model itself. bare arms. chain axes everywhere. I didnt want to go flat grey/white + blue color scheme so i went bone as the base. everythings going very slowly, im still figuring out how to do the Preheresy World Eater scheme without it looking silly. None of the parts are in thier final place in case i choose to use a different piece. heavy greenstuff will be used to cover pinning/conversions when im happy with the overall feel. Using the normal space marine codex/rules to represent nonchaos berzerkers (gasp!). without further ado

HQs:

Force Commander/Vulkan He'stan/Kor'sarro Khan/whatever

T.Hammer arm replaced with plastic assault marine arm repositioned. haft is plastic rod. chainaxe is from plastic nob boss. i wanted something that spoke of brutality, to offset his calm(ish) pose. he's calm and relaxed now, considering the flow of the battle, but theres a reason why his chainaxe is xboxhuge. supposed to represent any number of special characters. i wanted his weapons to look very nonspecific (powerweapon, combat weapon, relic blade) so i only need 1 model even if i switch his weapon options.

better view of chainaxe. nothing special, just big.

Captain/Shrike/Sicarius/whatever

pretty straight forward. i love the emperor's champion model so damn much. the pose is a pleasure to work with, very vague but enough that it hints at badassery. I think they may seem kinda cartoony for my tastes, but ill cut them off and replace them with the forge world chainaxes when they arrive if i feel they are too much.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/Gryss/DSC01861.jpg

another shot of the axes. they aren't chain axes but they are short handled monster axes. i feel it gives the weapons a certain kind of brutality which i really want to hint at in both the models themselves and the paint.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/Gryss/DSC01860.jpg

back shot to illustrate the handle length. im kind of worried the axes may also seem a bit too orky. i wanted brutal and unrefined as befits my vision of World Eaters, almost orky but i definitely dont want "why is that dude using ork weapons?".

Troops: not much to say here other than they are in various stages. all hand weapons will be replaced with FW chain axes when they arrive. i just hope they are big enough to fit the look im going for.

that last pic is actually partially painted but my painting light is very yellow and dim so it doesnt show any of the wash/blend. better pics to come (when the army is actually assembled with FW bits and im ready to full on paint as work permits.

im replacing power fists with 2hander chain axes (also taken from the plastic ork nob box)... its basically the same chainaxe as the HQ has, except 2handed.

SOMEthing like this... kind of...

i hope to post as many updates as possible. painted pics to come!

++EDIT++

Words have been bold have been changed to correct proper english usage/more board appropriate term. The B&C rules are quite clear that we are a proper english speaking board and leetspeak/chatspeak is frowned upon.

Looking good, though if their pre-heresy as well as removing the eagles off their chest plates you might want to modify the armour itself. A lot of them look like their MK8 armour, which was not produced until a few thousand years after the heresy was over.

This guide explains all the different Armour Marks. http://www.astronomican.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8279 MK5 was the armour variant produced during the Heresy, so all marks before that would be marks encountered in Pre-Heresy armies.

Excellent modeling so far. I am intrigued by your choice of using a light bone for the base. That's warmer than you would expect, but certainly doable. What will your blue look like? Dark? Perhaps a Prussian blue/grey?

I'm very interested in seeing how this proceeds.

Keep up the good work!

Haha oh I'm not THAT bad. And to be fair, you and your brother suckered me into this hobby. I'm just returning the favor! B)

Yea definitely invest in a pair of fluorescent lamps (basically white light) because it'll give you better lighting to paint under AND use for photographs.

Great work though if you want them as Pre-heresy you might want to remove the eagle on their chestplates.

yeh ill definitely look into that. would give them a more unadorned military look if i took off any skulls/eagles.

the light bone is just the basecoat atm. im going for either a black/orange volcanic looking base (Salamander-esque i guess) or a desert/rocky thing. im keeping in mind that the bone of their armour may get lost if i go the desert route but im gonna do some tests... as for the blue, im leaning towards a very pale blue. im no longer acquinted with the GW colors so ill have to go to the local GW and scan over what i have to work with. i really dont want the blue to be overpowering, i want to get the tone as close to the bone itself (ie very very light). Again, more experimenting will be done.

thanks everyone for their comments, ill get cracking so i can post update shots :P

UPDATE: just got an email from FW saying there was an error with my order (which was placed almost 3 weeks ago). i basically have to wait ANOTHER month for my chainaxes to arrive... booooooooo. :(

Well, if I was to be so bold as to make a suggestion, given that you are going after a light tone overall (which I think is a great idea), also take a look at Vallejo Model Colors 943 Grey Blue and 900 French Mir.Blue.

The former is a greyish blue, but still very blue. The latter is darker and has more grey in it. As I am trying to envision your end-state, you may want to look at colors like that.

Cheers,

suggestions are always welcome! ill dont have access to Vallejo paints where im at unless i order them, so i was hoping to just use GW paints (tho i dont mind mixing up a pot specially for this army). that said, i understand what you mean. i looked over both the colors you suggested and the closest to what i was thinking is definitely the 900 French Mirage Blue. im going to get some painting done tomorrow so ill try to have something to show for that.

Just a question: What exactly are you going to use them as? Tacticals can't have CCW's, and there are tactical markings on some shoulderpads, which rules out jump-packless Assault Marines or Vanguard.

all the marines with tactical shoulder pads are from the assault on black reach box, so they are plain old tacticals. the rest are assault marines in a rhino. i have an alternate list where they all have jump packs but have yet to purchase the models.

I recomend using the Blood Angels codex. You can take assault marines as troops, adn Death Company work well, representing PH Berzerkers. Pluss the whole over-charged engines adn charging towards the enemy suits WE down to teh ground.

Just an idea.

Very cool models as well.

yeh i was thinking of using BA actually, mainly because the first chapter i fell in love with was BA. but because the new marine codex is out (meaning the BA one will be redone), i opted to go for the super safe route and just use the normal marine codex (at least for now). the beauty of your own chapter (or one that doesnt have it own book) is that you can basically use anything and "counts as" them. atm im using vulkan as my HQ with a buttload of meltas/flamers to hose down my opponents with a healthy amount of fire before i marine zerg him. so basically im using salamander rules (kinda).

thanks for the idea tho, the overcharged engines did slip my mind tho... and you can never close with your enemy too fast ~_^

small update: the "white" is almost done, i've started on the metallics. slow progress i know. ill hasten to add more...

im basically painting while the gf watches her reality TV eps so it leaves little actual time to focus on finishing the army, but im definitely enjoying painting again. i cant wait to finish more.

I thought she was sick! :D

The white looks good man.

It looks like a "shaved" beastman arm. I picked up a box of em a while back because they make great bare-torso marines.

It is the Beastman Gor arms (the Ungor parts are a little weedier).
