Painting: Freehand-Banners for Dummies

Recommended Posts

Hey there folks,

I was planning on painting a freehand banner for one of my chaos squads and I thought I’d just make a little tutorial out of it.

Now I am not among the really great painters on this board, so don’t expect too much of this. But since I’m not that good, I try to keep things simple and still come out with a fancy looking end-result.

Translates to: “I’m a dummy, so I can easily do a Tutorial for other Dummies.” ^^

So on to the Tutorial:

Material

  • A fine brush. Any kind will do I guess, just use your finest brush
  • And our mantra: “Dumb it down, dumb it down, dumb it down,…”

STEP 1 - IDEA

  • Find an image for inspiration. This is the first fun step. Browse the net, leaf through any codex and rulebook you have lying around and pick an image you like.
  • A very good resource for images is DeviantArt
  • For my tutorial, I chose the picture Obsession and frustration 01 by Wen-M (Who is one great artist, btw!)

STEP 2 - CONCEPT

  • Take a sheet of paper and a pencil and try to redraw your inspiration image. And remember to DUMB IT DOWN.
  • If you plan ahead before wildly starting to paint, your end result will be much better. As you might see, I already thought about colors here, too, though I completely flipped them afterwards, silly bugger that I am.

STEP 3 - PRIME

  • Pick a banner. Keep in mind, the flatter and bigger it is, the easier.
  • I took the banner of the Bloodletters of Khorne sprue, it is large enough and quite flat.
  • I primed mine white and added several layers of very thinned down Red Gore over it.
  • I tried to make the color look more patchy, so it won’t look that bad when I later have to go over parts where I misplaced paint…

STEP 4 – BASIC SHAPES

  • You picked an image, but since we are not that good painters, we need to DUMB IT DOWN.
  • Keep the forms you use simple. As you can see my first sketch on the banner is made up of very basic forms like circles and squares.
  • Then fill out your shapes.
  • ALWAYS thin your paints while at it. You will change and rechange the image a lot, probably, so you want to have as thin layers of paint as possible.

STEP 5 – ADD DETAILS

  • Add more and more detail to the image.
  • Keep in mind your inspiration image and try to stick close to it.
  • But don’t be afraid to add your own flavor to it. I changed the hair (to disguise spots where my brush went off course) and the thing the girl is sticking in his head is now a symbol of Slaanesh.

STEP 6 - FINAL TOUCHES

  • Finish the last details. If your image went off center during the process and the rest of the banner looks too empty, think about adding some simple symbols to fill up the space. Maybe some runes or scribbly writing or something.
  • I added a chaos star in the back of my banner so the image won’t look lost.

NOTES

  • And that’s it!
  • As I said, I am not the best painter around. This tutorial is really by a dummy, for dummies, I doubt that more experienced painters can get much out of it.
  • But I am quite proud of what I ended up with, and if I can help at least one fellow dummy out here, I’m happy and the time spent taking the few bad pictures and loading them up was already worth it.

Oh and as always, if you liked this tutorial and used it in some way as an inspiration for your work, drop me a message and show me what you came up with!

Cheers,

Cathar

For the Mods: I do hope the image I used is not out of bounds considering the forum rules. It might not leave much to the imagination, but it does leave out the important parts that seperate it from porn, I think. I can of course remove the link to the image if you want, just don't immediately shoot this thread down, please. This has been a bit of work and I'd be sorry to see it waste away so quickly. Thanks!

We-ell, of course a real talented painter will highlight the motif on the banner, too.

But I am not that good and all I really wanted with this tutorial was to show less experienced painters that painting freehand banners is not that hard...

Would be nice to get some more feedback, though

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi again everyone!

Using my own tutorial, I have come up with another banner!

The image used as inspiration was Obsession and Frustration 04 by Wen-M.

Maybe someone from the Librarium could add these to the tutorial as further examples?

Thanks for looking,

Peter
