Who were we?

I have a feeling we would have been called the seventh legion prior to being re-united with Russ. I recall a passage about the Big E meeting Russ on Fenris, (actually I think most descriptions of legions finding their Primarchs, with differences ofcourse, were described this way) which said "...power fist to face ... welcomed him as a son, and gave him command of the seventh legion..."

Then almighty Russ said - "Bah, seven is boring, and I always wanted to be able to say 'Smithers, unleash the wolves' "

...the Black Legion went from Luna Wolves to Son's of Horus to Black Legion.

The dreaded Mark of Chaos Undecided...

"Huh.. so many to choose from. Do I wanna be a Berzerker and spill blood, or do I want to be a Plague Marine and spill my guts?"

I definitely recall Codex Astartes saying that Russ NAMED the sixth legion the Space Wolves.

As to a previous name, I don't know. This could be all foggyness in my head, but I think we may have been called the Wolf Raiders?

Well, I don't know whether this is considered "proper" canon, but the book "Horus Rising" places the name change between the campagin on Murder and the Campaign vs the Interex, prior to the events on Davin which is where the Warmaster fell.

Actually if I recall correctly the name and color change happened just after Davin where the Warmaster fell, it was after he rose again from certain death newly annointed by Chaos that he ordered the Legion's name changed, and this was shortly before the Istvaan Campaign.

I'm sorry to be a nit-picker - but it was indeed before the davin expedition that the the Luna wolves became The Sons of Horus - though it was after the fight with the interex: p.410 'Horus Rising'

Anywho back on topic - No canon (or GW/BL produced) literature exists that states the history of the legion before Russ was found except to say that it existed , and that Leman Russ was found early on in the crusade (Codex: Space Wolves 2nd Ed) - For my part I couldn't see them being called Space Wolves as the Luna Wolves were already in existence and I would think a being like the Emperor could be a tad more original - plus I like the idea of Horus and Russ quibbling in the early days over who copied who :)

N.B. just had a quick peruse through my rogue trader books and found some interesting additions - In the first Book of the Astronomicon there is a four part campaign for the old wolves. We lived on Lucan and were led by (I kid you not) Lord Enoch Lucan, Commander of the Space Wolves - I miss the silly days of 40k so much :( Grey Hunters were called 'Howlers', Blood Claws were called 'Tearers'. scouts were called 'Trackers' and Long Fangs were called 'Snarlers'. Great stuff! In the Compilation there's he first printing of the modern Leman Russ story - we've been moved to fenris now, and I've even managed to find my old white dwarfs with the 1st edition rules for the Wolves - released a few months before 2nd edition came out - happy days
