The Destroyers

Hello everyone. I have made plans for this years GT season and am making an army for it. After several completely DIY chapters I have decided to use a name of an GW established chapter (fully aware of the risks on developing background and potential changes should GW decide to expand their background on the chapter) and basic info that is known about it and to work from there up.

The facts that are known:

They are 2nd founding chapter.

They are ferocious and known for bloody excesses on the field of battle.

They are fine examples of the combat teachings of Jaghatai Khan.

The ideas I would like to develop:

Original HQ formed from "Terran" veterans.

A codex chapter with quirks.

Weakening of the link between them and other White Scar successors and their traditions and falling back to the ancient Terran ways.

Maintaining of the rapid assault strategy but having rhinos and razorbacks as their main means of transport rather than bikes.

Bike tradition continued by scout company.

A fleet based chapter.

Very secular as far as Imperial Creed is considered but rather superstitious.

I have also chosen Enchanted Blue as the colour of the marines since White Scars are white and other successors are red, yellow and a mix so I decided to add another of the Primary colours by taking blue.

An example of a 3rd company assault marine sergeant http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/spacemarine.jpg

I am currently pondering on the symbol (feel free to offer suggestions) and the battle cry.

Share your thoughts and over the weekend I will develop the Origins story.

ORIGINS

Nearly 11 000 years ago Imperium of Man was sundered by a civil war of titanic proportions. Previously thought to be incorruptible, Legions Astartes turned upon one another and against the Emperor. Leading this revolt was Warmaster Horus, lord and primarch of the Luna Wolves Legion, that were just before the outbreak of the rebellion renamed Sons of Horus in his honour. Among those that stood against the traitors were the marines of the White Scars legion. Led by their mighty primarch Jaghati Khan, they battled bravely against the tide of renegades that descended upon holly Terra seeking to overthrow the Emperor.

Suffice to say Horus was defeated and slain by the Emperor and the legions he had commanded fled beyond the reach of Imperial law into the Eye of Terror. Following the war those legions that remained loyal were broken down into smaller units called chapters to prevent anyone from wielding the terrible power of a Space Marine Legion again. Each of these chapters was roughy 1000 warriors strong and the White Scars gave rise to at least five such successor chapters. One amongst them was named the Destroyers.

The honour of commanding the Destroyers was given to Zdenek Khan, the hero of Hadrianatic. The chapter was given one of the old legions battle barges and several rapid strike vessels for support and sent to reclaim the galaxy in the name of the Imperium. Since that fateful day millennia ago the Destroyers have plied the coldness of space bringing hope to humanity and brutal vengeance to its enemies.

I have opted for a short and "plain" Origins part that will be supplemented with one side bar called "the Khans Dream" and a side bar speaking about Zdenek. I will going to concentrate more on the beliefes, combat doctrine and organisation part of the article as well as couple of sidebars with episodes from their history.

Also I have changed my mind about weakening the link between the White Scars and them. The link will remain but I will be keeping with maintaining the traditions of ancient Terra. Also I am going to create links (a once per century feast where several chapters compete in deeds of alchochol and food consumption followed by feats of martial skill and strength) with Space Wolves as I see Destroyers as noble savages that though fighting for the good of humanity (and having a Salamanderesq trait) are concerned with gathering wealth (gold, precious stones, rare minerals, ancent weapons, hides of exotic animals for their halls etc...) and proclaiming personal glory to anyone willing to listen.

When I said codex chapter I was thinking of having 10 companies (due to the lack of space) and their Battle Barge (Pride of Deimos) would be an ancient pre-heresy design (BFG in game Despoiler class battleship venerable BB) capable of transpoting six companies at once(from that ship they could not deploy via drop pods). They also have Styx heavy cruiser (Razarach) reserved for the "Warmonger's" company. Due to strained relations with AM they are unable to acquier new capitol ships but the chapter had managed to obtain several other "pahsed" out ships during times of political turmoil in the Imperium. Thanks to the ancient pacts with Dark Angles, Destroyers get their escorts from them in return for materials and favours. On most occasions the chapter does not even fight on company or demi-company level but rather dispatches small detachemnts (10-30 strong) on their strike crafs to support ongoing operations conducted by other Imperial forces in the area they currently pass by.

The Warmonger and Senior Sergeant are two ranks I decided to introduce. The later for commanding those "detachemnts"(border patrols) and the first for a special company. The Warmonger is one of the chapter captains or even the chapter master himself. Once a marine passes a certain age he will recieve dreams beconing him to seek out an destroy the foes of humanity leaving a trail of death and destruction across the stars, these dreams will guide him to a place where a particulary dangerous follower of dark gods can be found, once the foe is beaten the dream guide him to a new opponent. The Warmonger's Company is made out of captains own company plus support elements from the first, tenth and the reserve companies usually numbering between 300-400 marines. There is never more than one Warmonger and there are times when there isn't one. Only in death does the Warmonger's task end.

The first Company is known as the Throathrippers.

Destroyers tactics are very assault oriented but does not rely on bikes. There are Devastator squads but are usually only seen as part of the Warmonger's company since detachments must be as flexible as possible and are almost exclusevly made out of Tactical and Scout squads.

Tactical Marine / Sergeant (all sergeants are veterans and will have crux terminatorix hanging somewhere on their outfit, how to represent veteran sergeant I haven't decided yet) / Veteran / Captain / Terminator

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/DestroyerTM.jpghttp://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/DestroyerTMS.jpghttp://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/DestroyerVM.jpghttp://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/DestroyerSMC.jpghttp://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/DestroyerTDA.jpg

That is for now, more will be added as I finish my first tactical squad. For the GT I am planing to make the Warmonger's Company.

All C&C wellcome

Cheers

First things off the bat, good luck with fluffing out one of the non-background'd Second Founders.

I'll start with the 'bad' points:

I'm not a fan of the dreams. Unless you go into the reason why behind these dreams, I find it a little distracting. A better idea, in my opinion, would be taking the ideas of the Masters of the Hunt and the Terran Duels. This should weave nicely with the idea of taking the two different cultures, of the White Scars and the Terran of old, and still keep the same idea. You could also have it that the Warmonger doesn't have to take his Company with him, and some have left alone.

On the same note, I'm not a fan of the name, Warmonger, nor Throatrippers. The first is already a Space Marine chapter, and it could get a little confusing. It also doesn't really fit with the idea of the Hunter, seeking the enemy. As for Throatrippers, the Destroyers is already a pretty violent name, so I don't think you need to up the anti here.

Ancient-Pacts with the Dark Angels? I'm not sold on this. The DA are very secretive and I doubt they would play nice with anyone outside of the Unforgiven. It might work if you used a different chapter (maybe a fellow Second Founder, possible one of the Blood Angel successors or Imperial Fists ones to show friendship from the Siege of Terra.)

The 'tiny' fleet. Having over half your chapter in one place is never going to be a good idea. I think having a behemoth of a home ship is fine, but maybe one or two side shows to allow them a little more freedom. Plus, most chapters deploy in very small numbers most of the time, it is just that we only ever here of the big major battles.

The 'good' points: (I say good, I mean stand out above the rest which isn't mentioned).

Combination of WS and Terra. I think if done correctly, this could be fantastic. You have to take some of the right ingredients from either to make sure it works. The mobility of the WS combined with the strength/power of the Terrans makes a chapter which, whilst fast, is aimed on something more heavy.

Interesting points...

Point 1) I have to thank you for bringing up the Duels, that part completely slipped my mind. The dream idea is something that is floating and was maybe influenced by "the Khans Dream" sidebar that will address the origin of the name. In my mind the second founding chapters were given their names by their primarchs though I am not certain would that involve Emperors tarot (did that even exist at that time).

Apart from the dreams I had two more ideas to explain the "Warmonger's" company. One was that each century there is feast/drinking contest and the winner is given the honour of leading a force that symbolically recreates the Great Crusade seeking out the deadliest of foes and trying to expand the borders of the Imperium. The other was inspired by Highlander/Predator, Destroyer characters seeking out the most dangerous foes to cut of their heads and use them as embelishments for their tombs.

Point 2) I missed that Warmongers were a chapter. I also had several other names that came up

The Driven

Emperor's Champion (rather generic)

The Destroyer - as in during his task the marine becomes the embodiment of the chapter leaving his true personality behind

Deathdealer

Warsavant

Judicator -as in he is bringing the judgement of humanity on its foes

When you mention Throatrippers I guess it is that you don't see something until another points it out. I guess it would be to much. Along with the Throatrippers I had several other names I was pondering on

Deathweavers

Ravagers - I guess this would be to much as well

Razor Wolves - wolf will be an animal that will take part in the story due to its mythological conotations but I though having cordial relations with SW and having the 1st company with a wolf name was pushing it to much

Slaughterers - same as Ravagers

Some of these I will certainly use for squad names.

Point 3) To be honest I was looking for a way to get my chapter some ships that are not from AM and went for a chapter that is know for its independece and operates in roughly the same area. I am not set on them and could easily change that for either Ultramarines (know for their shipyards), Space Wolves (they have independent shipyard but am not so keen in adding another link), Imperial Fist/Blood Angle successor (what you said).

Point 4) Well the fleet isn't that small just that I haven't named all the ships. One battle barge(despoiler class), one heavy crusiers(styx class), 3 cruisers (devastation class - captured during Age of Apostasy) and two dozen rapid strike vessels (cobra class). Along with having the chapter fleet based I am developing an idea of a funeral world with a chapter keep.

Also I have decided on the chapters symbol

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f355/Giladis/Aries_Glyph2.jpg

It is the sign of the Aries but due to the time and myth making the sign of the Aries and war god Ares (in his aspect as the destroyer) have been merged into one with the wolf rather than a wild dog taking place as his animal representative.

(Captain) Zdenek (Khan) will be from a mediteranian culture with slavic undercurrents and I will draw some inspiration from there and from the middle european Iron age Hallstatt culture.

Cheers

I have rewritten the Origins part and added the Homeworld part (I decided to adress the recruiting part under Geneseed)

ORIGINS

From the horrors of the Horus Heresy emerged a new Imperium and as all changed around them so did the Legions Astartes. Following the dictates of Codex Astartes each of the legions was divided into several smaller fighting formations called chapters. This was to be known as the Second founding. The White Scars legion gave rise to at least five of these successor chapters. One amongst them would be named the Destroyers.

Jaghatai Khan, primarch of the White Scars, elevated Zdenek Khan to become the Master of the newly founded Destroyers, to honour him as the last of the original members of the legion. The aftermath of the Horus Heresy was a dark time for the Imperium and Zdenek led the Destroyers through some of the most brutal fighting seen at that time and as the chapter battled across the stars it was slowly moulded into the image of their commander.

Through guidance from Master Zdenek the Destroyers soon became one of the most dedicated assault forces the Imperium could call upon matched only by the descendants of Russ and Sanguinius. Wars that they fought quickly became a byword for effective but brutal campaigns and though there were rumours of bloody excesses upon the field of battle and beyond it, these were just heard and forgotten for every marine was sorely needed.

Since these long mist shrouded times Destroyers have maintained their watch over the Imperium and humanity fighting against myriad opponents on countless worlds to ensure the Emperors dream may endure. Their ferocious reputation precedes their arrival and many foes have chosen to flee or take their own lives rather than face the savage fury of the Destroyers for it is said by the Ecclesiarchy that Destroyers are Emperors wrath made flesh.

HOMEWORLD

Unlike most other chapters the Destroyers have no world to call their own and function from a number of space ships. The heart of the chapter is their ancient battle barge Proud Conqueror, whose class and design predate the Great Crusade. It is capable of carrying six full companies and includes chapter’s apothecarion along with a small forge. The ship is one of the oldest functioning in the Imperium and over the millennia adepts of Mars have been allowed to copy some of its features.

Though smaller than the Proud Conqueror, a Styx class heavy cruiser named Razarach is the chapter’s flagship. It is the personal vessel of the chapter Master and the 1st company. This mighty ship is another relic from the early centuries of the Imperium and has been heavily refitted to be able to house up to three companies if needed and space was provided for chapter’s Reclusiarchy and Librarium. The largest single room on the ship is the chapter’s feast hall capable of accommodating the entire chapter.

In addition to these capitol ships the Destroyer possess a squadron of Devastation class cruiser acquired through the right of conquest during the Age of Apostasy from a secessionist movement in the northern reaches of the galaxy. These ships have been refitted as chapter’s support vessels and boast a vast array of training environments as well as the majority of chapter’s production facilities. It is upon these ships that neophytes are accommodated and trained and as a result of that each possesses considerable medical facilities and a small storage of the chapters precious geneseed.

The Destroyers fleet also boasts half a dozen strike cruisers and two dozen rapid strike vessels of various classes which they have obtained over the years. Should the chapter’s fleet ever be gathered in one place it would powerful enough to challenge an entire sector battle group. Apart from their extensive fleet the Destroyers maintains three chapter keeps in Segemntum Solar built on worlds near the vital systems of Banna, Gathalamor and Sol. These chapter keeps serve as one of the lynchpins for the defences of the sub sectors surrounding those systems.

A short update.

As I have been pondering on Organisation and Battle Doctrine I was forced to leave C:SM behind and search for one that could more closely represent what I have in mind. As it currently stands I am considering either Blood Angels and Space Wolves though am leaning more to the Space Wolves.

Cheers

Jaghatai Khan, primarch of the White Scars, elevated Zdenek Khan to become the Master of the newly founded Destroyers, to honour him as the last of the original members of the legion. The aftermath of the Horus Heresy was a dark time for the Imperium and Zdenek led the Destroyers through some of the most brutal fighting seen at that time and as the chapter battled across the stars it was slowly moulded into the image of their commander.

First of the bat, I would suggest not giving Zdenek the grand status of being 'the last original member of the Legion' as this is a hell of a thing to be. It would explain that he wasn't quite into the bike-scene as his brothers were, so you could leave him as a Terran Marine, but I don't think it is something which really needs to be stated. I would also suggest taking a name of one of the Khans which actually took over a Khanate upon the death of Genghis, such as Chagatai (which is also known as Jagatai), Batu, Hulagu or Kublai.

The rest of it seems pretty good so far bar the idea of abandoning Codex: Space Marines. I can understand the reasoning, but I don't think it should play on the fluff at all.

Than rephrasing to something like this should be in order

"...Jaghatai Khan, primarch of the White Scars, elevated Zdenek Khan to become the Master of the newly founded Destroyers, to honour him as one of the last few surviving terrans in the legion..."

I thought about the name and decided against the "Mongolian" theme and decided to use Slavic/Byzantine names to represent the region from where first chapter master descended and later went to shape the chapter in his image.

I am currently half way through the story about Zdenek and I have put his place of birth in the Danarac Mountains (Dinaric Alps) that stretch between the Dust Plains of Dunay (Carpathian Basin) and the Gorge of Hadrianaticus (Adriatic Sea). Originating from the techno barbarians that fought for the control of the mine shafts which were one of the few places were life could be sustained as they connected to the deep caverns in the karst where water gathered. A great enemy to these barbarians were motorized nomadic bands which inhabited the Dust Plains of Dunay and often raided the borderline settlements. Later the people of Chogoris and Jaghatai will remaind Zdenek of these enemies of old.

I can understand the reasoning, but I don't think it should play on the fluff at all.

It is quite the opposite the background is pointing me into that direction.

Thanks on the comments and cheers

The new version reads much better; doesn't give him to much kick-arsery :D As for Zdenek, the idea of him being a non-native and that is why he is only partially converted to the mobile warfare. That being said, I believe it would be a mistake that to detail his history too much. When I created the Black Guard, the initial Chapter Master had this on him;

The more restrained members of the Legion were formed into one of the new chapters under the command of Master Lev Chernyi, formerly of the captain of the fourth Grand Company. Chernyi had seen the horrors of the Weregeld first hand, personally over-seeing their herding into battle on numerous occasions. The events of the Weregeld had struck a fear deep within Chernyi who vowed that it would never happen again. The chapter became as dedicated to the purification of their gene-seed as Chernyi was, to the degree which a majority of the chapter was organised around this single aim.

I don't believe SCC Brazen Claws had their leader back-history detailed too much either.

A short update

I have made the decision that they will have all of the organs but due to some imbalance in chemistry caused by induced slightly accelerated growth of zygotes (they were hard pressed early in their history to replace losses and the tehnik(sp) stayed). The result of this is darkening of the skin (dark flesh, maybe better to say heavily tanned?), hyperactivity (it only affects the younger members of the chapter, as marines age these horomones go to normal, I am still considering making the amount of these hormones recede as a marine ages indefinatly so that very old marines would be "slughish"). Some marines never unfortunately go out of the hyperactive phase and even get worse becoming psychotic homicidal maniacs, but that is very rare. The hyperactivness also sometimes returns to those interred into the Dreadnoughts (this drives them to the very brink of sanity as this keeps them almost constantly awake).

The chapter can deploy great many Dreadnoughts since they inherited almost all of the suites of the old legion (WS do not use them and I guess quite a lot of suites would have been left lying around at the time of the 2nd founding that Zdenek and his boys decided they could put to good use). Maybe even making the 9th company made entirely out of Dreadnoughts considering Devastator squads are very rare, practically non-existant in the chapter.

Librabians are recruited from promising individuals from Scholastica Psykana

Chaplains are thought basic battlefield medicine by the Apothecarians since the chapter is loathe to send these to battle as they are to precious.

Techmarines are not send as youths to Mars but as veterans when they are allready deeply steeped into the lore of the chapter and no matter what they learn from AM will affect their views of the world. The chapter enjoj good relationships with AM but they do not trust them in a way Techmarines are Destroyers spies in the AM.

Deathwatch "Company" is and idea that has been growing over the last few days. This would be an informal company attached to the Masters household and number around 20-30 marines and be led by a special captain. The Destroyers will have a very monodominian belief system and will be closely related to the Ordo Xenos.

Names for units

Berserker Squad (Blood Claws)

Warriors Squad (Grey Hunters)

Veteran Squad (Long Fangs)

Myrmidon (Wolf Guard)

Chapter Master (Special Character) will make my own rules for friendly play otherwise it will Logan Grimnar rules

Captain (Wolf Lord)

Senior Sergeant (Wolf Guard Battle Leader)

Also for that special "crusader marine" I have chosen the name Warlord. I have decided to stay with the dream like story line (after all 40k is grim dark with lost of mysteries) but the Librarians come into play. When evil things are at large in the galaxy they will get a vision pointing them in a general direction where the challenge lies. Then the captains of the fighting (battle) companies will duel for the honour of taking the quest. The winner is given the honour and he sets of. He takes his company and is also given any additional resuorces he may ask for, though he is followed by his company he must slay the evil in single combat.

For the battle-cry I have chosen

Chaplain - "Glory to Terra!"

Brethren - "Death to her foes!"

Not related to the background that much but still significant is that I might change the colour scheme with red for blue. I did a couple of test models with different shades of blues (thank GW on those cheap AOBR tacticals) and can't find the shade I like, at the same time I got the new Mechandarite red and did a test model with the second layer of Scab Red and Red gore and got an effect I like much more.

The reasoning behind the blue colour was that that was in ages past colour of Terra and through that Destroyers wanted to show where their heritage lies. Now should I chose red I would have to find a solution and explanation for it.

And one last thing I would like the reasons of you good folks why my chapter would have lots of heat based weapons.

Cheers

P.S. along with the IA article I am writing a Codicum Imperials, older member might remember what that was, basically IA just much more in detail.

Orhganisation and Battlecry part added, will expand more on the Deathwach Guard later

ORGANISATION

Following their creation the Destroyers accepted the tenants of Codex Astartes and divided themselves into ten companies. Yet as it is with many chapters of the 2nd founding they have developed their own specific titles and changes in organisation to better suite their needs. The most notable difference between the Destroyers and other strict codex chapters is seen in the number and composition of reserve companies. As such the chapter has only one reserve company, the 10th and lacks a dedicated scout company.

Due to their teachings and preferred styles of engagement the Destroyers have very few dedicated man portable heavy weapons and they are reserved for veteran warriors which have been incapacitated in some way and can no longer give their maximum in the close quarters combat. As a result of that the 10th company, which is the heavy support company, is made out of Dreadnoughts which have been inherited from the original White Scars legion. The old legion acquired the beliefs of the nomadic warriors of Chogoris that prevented maimed warriors to be interred into the sarcophagi of the Dreadnought but Zdenek had no such qualms and ensured that the Destroyers inherited all the Dreadnoughts of the fifth legion, that have stayed unused for many long years. Though many original members of the Destroyers were against the Dreadnoughts the teachings of Zdenek and traditions of Terra prevailed. Such is the power of this formation that only the Master of the chapter can sanction its use.

The neophytes of the chapter are considered part of the chapter’s Apothecarion and do not see battle until they receive their power armour when they are sent to join berserker squads in one of the battle companies. These young marines suffer from bursts of hyperactivity and are counted among the most dangerous assault units among the Adeptus Astartes.

The rest of the chapter is divided into eight battle companies and one veteran company each roughly 100 marines strong but allowed to exceed that number, when operating separated from the rest of the chapter, should the need call for it. The veteran company is one of the smallest in existence as it is made out of veteran marines that have served for decades or even centuries but have not managed to obtain the status of the Myrmidon. These aged experienced warriors take to the field as fire support for their younger brethren operating powerful man portable heavy weapons. Sometimes these veterans will take to battle riding attack bikes providing mobile heavy weapon fire.

Each of the companies is led by a Captain and a pair of Senior Sergeants which act as advisors alongside company’s Chaplain and Librarian. To protect these officers each company is given a number of Myrmidons from the Master’s household. These are the chapter’s deadliest warriors elevated from the ranks of Veteran, Warrior and very rarely Berserker squads and act as Masters personal retinue. Most of the Myrmidons are dispersed throughout the chapter serving as bodyguards for officers and leaders of Berserker squads. It is their duty with the help of the Chaplains to train young Destroyers.

The majority of the company is made out of Berserkers. These young warriors are equivalent of other chapters neophytes just enclosed in power armour. They perform the majority of assault duties for the Destroyers considering their violent and hyperactive nature. The mortality rate among the Berserkers is extremely high and only a small portion of their number survives long enough to be promoted into a Warrior which is an equivalent of a tactical marine. The Warriors squads are used to secure positions taken by Berserkers and often take to the field of battle just in carapace armour and act as scouts for the advancing forces.

The chapter enjoys friendly relations with the Adeptus Mechanicus exchanging discovered technoarcana and often conducting joint expeditions into the unknown. As a result the Destroyers have more Techmarines than any other chapter though these members are far less revered than those in other chapters. As far as Destroyers are concerned Techmarines are merely brethren that can repair damaged wargear and build new pieces of it. The most important reason why that is so are the decisions of first chapter Master Zdenek who forbid young technically inclined members to be sent to Mars. These members are closely monitored by chapter’s officers and should they survive until they reach the rank of a veteran they will be sent to Mars to receive their training. As such Techmarines of the Destroyers are an anomaly among their kind utterly loyal to the chapter. In many ways they are spies, infiltrated into the Mechanicum to look out for any sign of treachery for Zdenek newer forgot the many battles he fought against them during the Unification wars and the Horus Heresy.

Though Zdenek respected the Emperor he never trusted him completely for in his eyes he was a witch, a benevolent one, but witch nonetheless. Following the second founding the Destroyers decided that in spite Zdenek’s dislike of the psykers the chapter would have a number of Librarians. Mighty oaths were signed with Scholastica Psykana ensuring the physically most promising Primaris Psykers can be tested for becoming Space Marines. Though respected by their brethren most prefer to keep their distance from them when not in battle.

The Chaplains of the chapter are truly inspiring individuals and among the best fighters Destroyers can send to battle. Apart from being schooled in the lore of the chapter and selecting aspirants they are thought by the chapters Apothecaries basic battlefield medicine that can ensure marines survival. This is done because the Destroyers are loathe to send their Apothecaries onto the battlefield unless in extreme situations for their presence is almost continually required in the chapters Apothecarion.

Standing apart of these formations is the Deathwatch Guard. It is an informal group of marines within the Master’s household led by an independent Captain that answers the calls of the Ordo Xenos of the Inquisition. There is no set number of these guards and their number fluctuates from just a few individuals to as many as three squads.
