Apogee
So, this weekend I had my first ever Hall of Heroes tournament. I brought the best army I could field and unfortunetly forgot my camera. I'll do a brief summary of each battle and my thoughts on how things went. First, the army! My list: HQ Flying Nun - Inferno Pistol, Blessed Weapon, Jump Pack, Mantle of Ophelia, Cloak of St. Aspiria WH Inq Lord - Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, His Will Be Done Retinue - 3 Crusaders, 3 Familias, 2 Hospitallers Rhino - Storm Bolter x2, EA, Smoke Elites 2 Squads of 3 DCAs 12 Repentia, Mistress, Priest - Power Armour, Power Weapon Troops 2 Squads of Sisters - 13 Sisters, 2 w/ Flamer, Superior w/ Plasma Pistol and Eviscerator Storm Troopers - 8 Troopers, one with Melta, one with Plasma No Fast Attack Heavy Support 2 Exorcists, EA Retributors - 4 Multimeltas, 5 Sisters, Superior w/ Bolter and Power Sword So, a rather defensive army. I didn't have all my rhinos painted, and so decided I'd try a 'sit and shoot' army. It didn't really turn out that way... Game one - Orks My first opponent was Orks - a well-balanced list - Nobs with a Warboss in a Battlewagon, a Mek with Force Field escorting a mob of Boys and Grots to my lines, a Looted Wagon, some Kannons, Lootas, 2 Kans, and a Dread. The terrain for this match was scattered around the battlefield in a rough donught formation, with a open-ish area on the middle. There was a trench in the middle offering cover. I set up my troops on the sidelines, and my heavy support all in the middle, which gave them cover and a nice wide firing line. My Repentia and Inq Lord stayed in reserve, and my DCAs outflanked. The battle was annihilation with pitched-battle setup. The game was pretty simple - orks advanced, and I shot at them. Not much went down initially, but the ork fire was ineffectual as well. The first major event was the Battlewagon making its way to me and unloading 8 (i think) angry nobs with a warboss, who promptly charged my 'bait' sisters who I had left in front. The sisters were killed down to the Superior and a few stragglers. On the other side of the board, m second sisters squad attacked some boys, but failed to do much and were charged and killed. My cannoness was charged by the two kans - she brought one down, but lost to the other. The Dread had thankfully been blown up by some lucky exorcist fire. Next turn, I had some luck: Inq Lord comes in - Charges the Nobs Repentia come in - Charge the Nobs DCAs all outflank on the same side - charge a 30-strong boys mob. The Lord and Repentia cleaned up the Nobs completely, killing them all and running down the fleeing warboss. The DCAs charged and killed *13* boyz, inflicting 8 more wounds from fearlessness, and went on to slaughter the Kannons and the Lootas. The battlewagon tried to ram my Exorcist, which took it straight into my MultiMelta girls who were in front. One did a death or glry, and blew it away on double 6s. At the end of the match, all that the orks had left was a few grots and some straggler boys. A solid victory for me, as I win KP, but we both got our secondary objectives - killing the most expensive troop choice of the enemy (my sisters, his nobs). Game Two - Space Wolves This game was pretty similar. It was objectives, with 4 scattered about. Secondary was table quarters. My opponent's army was nearly entirely CC oriented. From memory, he had 3 CC HQs, 10ish Wulfen, two squads of 10ish CC marines of another sort, 15 feral wolves, and a squad of regular marines. Deployment was Dawn of War, so I deployed my sisters and Cannoness out first. My deployment, as it turns out, was pretty terrible. My Cannoness was charged on turn one - i didn't realize Wolves were so fast! She brought down a few before dying, and gave me enough time to position the rest of my forces as they came in on my turn. My Repentia, Inq Lord, and DCAs all stayed in reserve, while everything else came on. The board was very sparse for terrain, and so I brought everything into position around a crater, forming a tight box to hide my Exorcists and MMs within. It worked pretty well, as the wolves flanked me on both sides and smashed my Sister squads. My Repentia and Lord again saved my bacon by coming in and charging Wulfen and feral wolves, keeping them away from my real firepower. Very little was left on the board by the end of the game, and I ended up getting a complete loss - my opponents HQ managed to kill, on the last turn, a sister, a Superior with an eviscerator, a DCA, and two troopers with one wound left. This denied my my only objective and he still held his with 3 regular marines (hiding out of LOS) He also contested or held every quarter due to that. Another turn woudl have easily killed everything but his 3 tac marines, since all my heavy firepower was still unscathed, but thems the breaks I suppose. Game Three - Blood Angels More melee? Glad I gave my sisters Eviscerators, lemme tell you. This game I was back on the board I played on initially. Deployment was table quaters, mission was annihilation, ssecondary being HQ assassination - not good for a flying nun and a CC Inq Lord! My opponent had Dante, Lemartes, a Death Company, two squads of Veteran assault marines, and 4 5-man squads of tacs in Rhinos with Meltas. I took a quarter with a big building to hide my heavy support inside of, and placed all my troops in the trench that lined my deployment zone. My Repentia and Lord again stayed in reserve - my DCAs this time were on the board to back the troops up in the inevitable melee. For the first two turns, not much happened, Rhinos tried to zoom out (one crashed), marines flew every which way, and my exorcists failed terrible. I managed to disarm and immobilize ONE rhino with two turns of exo fire - not good! I moved a sister squad out to try flame and bolterfire against them, but didn't get as far as I thought I would I only caught a few in rapidfire range, and was charged after dropping two. The sisters will torn apart, and my Cannoness & 3 DCAs ran in to offer support. The Blood Angels responded by throwing 10 Veterans into the fray, as well as a tac squad. Things looked grim. 2 DCAs fell, as well as some marines. My cannoness took a hit, and my remaining sisters were killed. However, I again pulled a rabbit out of the hat. The Repentia and Inq Lord both came on, and the Repentia were angry They didn't quite make it to combat, but got close. My Retribs helped to save the day by blowing up a rhino that was parked next to the gigantic melee mess - and it exploded, 6 inches of shrapnel, catching everyone in close combat and some other nearby marines as well. A few marines dropped and I took no losses. My Cannoness and remaining DCA managed to keep the enemy locked in combat for another turn, enabling my Repentia to get into the action, and my Lord to get close. My Repentia cut down a swathe (and were cut down as well), leaving one enemy HQ standing with a single wound, and a couple assault and death company marines – small enough for my Lord to handle, especially with some preliminary shooting. Unfortunetly, the game was called then. On KP, my opponent won, and ew tied for secondary – giving him the win. He agreed, however, that we would call it a draw – if my shooting went as it should have, he'd have lost everything but a couple 5-man tac squads and three rhinos before I even assaulted next turn. Unit of the match: Repentia! These girls saved my army from destruction every game, by coming in on turn two or three and counter-charging whatever bad-nasty assault mob had made its way to me. They usually died shortly after, but always cut down what they charged. Total kill tally – Nob squad, Kan, Wulfen Squad, Death Company and some Assault Marines. Also contributed wounds ot various Hqs. Honerable Mentions: Inq Lord and his retinue, while not being a massively powerful squad, provided an excellent distraction, and were pretty tough to kill. Worked well in tandem with the Repentia. DCAs: Cut down enemies in every combat they made it to. I don't think I lost a single one to enemy fire, except after massacring some enemies – and even then, they can only target one... However, when they lost combat, they would each take a numerous amount of wounds from Fearless – a real weakness Worst units of the match: Sisters. My sisters did very little in terms of killing. They did a lot for screening, at least. Using flamers and footslogging turns out to be a terrible idea, as getting them into position is nigh impossible. Stormbolters woudl have worked better, and enabled me to just sit still in cover. Exorcists. They did kill things as they were supposed to, but not when. I only once got the kill that I needed right then, on the ork Dread. The BA game was even worse, as they failed to kill a rhino in over 3 turns of shooting. Overall, it was a lot of fun! I'll be doing it again – maybe mechanized next time . Thanks for reading my wall o' text! DevianID
How many points were you playing? Normally I. Lords and repentia are very cost prohibitive in smaller games, let alone the 6 DCA, its nice to be able to fit them all in. In kill point games, how do you keep the DCA from being a huge liability? Apogee
It was 2000 points, so they're still a big sink of points. Well worth it, though. The DCAs were just a massive liability in KP, yes. I found that you *must* throw them all into the same combat - if you don't route the enemy, you're giving points away. That's what happened in the last game, really.. the DCAs got seperated by terrain and it wasn't pretty. I bet if all 6 DCAs had made it into combat, the Repentia wouldn't have even been neccessary. WarriorFish
Good reports, I enjoyed the read! It's cool to see Repentia getting some effective action. I wouldn't worry too much about them suffering though, they're not a brilliant unit by any stretch of the word so what you got out of them was very good indeed. Same with the =][=, they're not a star of the codex but they can and often do put in solid performances. I've seen =][= perform extremely well in most of the games I've seen with them, so it's mostly about the right build in the right list. They look cool too. Anyway, I found your musings interesting - I hope you've learnt your lesson about not using foot slogging flamer squads though (and I never imagined I'd be picking out holes in SoB squads in a list that uses Repentia! :D)!
