Ephemeriis
If I'm adding a Canoness to my army, I have the option of adding a Celestian Retinue. If I understand correctly, this turns the Canoness + Celestians into a single unit. The Canoness would be unable to leave those Celestians behind. For no cost difference I can instead add a squad of Celestians. I would be able to join that squad with my Canoness, or leave it and operate her as an IC. So, my question: What am I missing? There's got to be some reason why I'd want to add a retinue instead of a separate squad. What is it? JamesI
If it is a retinue, then the cannoness can't be picked out in close combat. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164004-n00b-question/#findComment-1928066 Share on other sites

Grand Master Tchezzarus
More over, by loosing her IC statut and giving her a rosarius, you could really improve the longevity of the whole squad against shooting and close combat! Brother Idaeus
also it gives you a Celestian squad without using up an Elite choice, which is REALLY GOOD, as you want as many of those as possible Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164004-n00b-question/#findComment-1928136 Share on other sites
SJumppanen
If it is a retinue, then the cannoness can't be picked out in close combat. And that gives you an another hidden Evicerator or Blessed Weapon (first one being VSS). Priest gives a third. Rhino and all the Celestians Rhino can carry. Eltnot
THIS is the only difference. the canoness doesn't have the retinue special rule so even with a celestian squad she can still be targeted in CC. The Canoness is NOT by default an independant character. Her rules state that she becomes one only if her retinue of Celestians dies, or a Celestian Retinue is not bought for her in the first place. What this means for a Canoness/Palantine with a Celestian bodyguard is that the Canoness will only be worth a kill point if her bodyguard dies also. Until that time, her and the squad are a single unit. This is not to be confused with other IC's that join squads because the Canoness is not an IC to begin with. Reclusiarch Darius
This is how it works fellas; Flying Nun of Doom: She rides alone or with Seraphim. She is an IC like normal Canoness+Celestian retinue: She is NOT an IC, she counts as an upgrade character, as per the BRB rules for 'retinues' bought with HQ characters. If the Celestian retinue is killed, she reverts to being an IC next turn. Hence, the following brutalises most opponents; Canoness, eviscerator, inferno pistol, Cloak, Book Priest, eviscerator, power armour, purity seals VSS, eviscerator, 4 x Celestians, heavy flamer, meltagun Rhino, extra armour, smokes (370 points) You can't attack the Priest or the Canoness directly, and with 'Martyr' turned on the retinue has 3+ invul while the Canoness has a 2+ invul. Shooting-wise, they're generating two S8 AP2/1 shots for killing transports/softening up TeQ's, and a heavy flamer for softening up infantry. As follow up, on the charge they have 10 x eviscerator attacks (at S8 with 'Hand' turned on) with re-rolls to hit.
