I haven't bought Codex SM yet, and before I do, I'd like to know if the traits system still exists. Can anyone tell me ? Thanks ! chromedog Posted March 25, 2009 Share Posted March 25, 2009 I can tell you. No, the traits system is gone. Replaced by a new one where your commander determines what units can be changed. So, the SM players, using traits, who changed to two specials in a tactical squad, or apothecaries for all of their tac squads or whatever have excess models now (Tacticals can take one special and only a heavy if 10 men, but the heavy is a freebie (lascannon or plasmacannon is an upgrade for points). Take a Naster of the Forge as your HQ (super-techmarine) and you can take 6 dreads in your army. Put your Captain on a bike, and bike squads become troops. Things like this. Am I the only one thinking it's disappointing or am i missing something ? Maligoare Posted March 25, 2009 Share Posted March 25, 2009 To be fair, while the actual traits system is gone, several of the options they gave are still available. You can take a Techmarine as an HQ, have Dreadnoughts as heavy or elites choices, take bikes as troops, and one of the named commanders gives a Tactical squad one of four USRs. Add to that the extra options the special characters give you, and I would say that it is at least as flexible as the old system. If you want fluff, what you come up with yourself is going to be far better suited to your chapter (and you can still use the older fluff if you want). Am I the only one thinking it's disappointing or am i missing something ? Oh, there are plenty of people mourning over the loss of the trait system. Not me, personally. I was no fan of the trait system, but the current system of encouraging the use of special characters is even worse I guess. The basilisk comes to mind, but other than that, are there whole units and types of models that are illegal for chaos now? I can still use all my chaos models. Let's not turn this into a 'Who's Codex has lost most' discussion because that isn't one for the OR forum. Anyway, yes traits have gone to be replaced by a system of named and generic characters bestowing specialist rules upon either their whole army or specific units within it to change their capabilities. Can't say more than that. Buy the Codex :).
