Best Units or Preferred Units

Venerable dreadnought. He's just to Wolfy and vicious to leave slumbering. These days in a drop pod. I've also come to love the deathwind missile launcher in my last few games and I am including it on my venerable dreads drop pod more and more often.

Long Fang

Venerable Dreadnought with Heavy Flamer and Assault Cannon

Wolf Priest leading a pack of Plasma Grey Hunters (1 Plasma Gun and 2 Plasma Pistols plus Plasma Pistol on the Wolf Priest)

Lately, Land Raider Crusader with full Blood Claw pack with 3 Power Fists plus leader (either Ragnar or other CC specialized leader)

Vindicator also has been performing well...the Wolf of Fenris...

This is a rough formula based on what I found myself doing a year after I started playing wolves. Ive kept up with the rough idea since though I will make changes at random to do something cool, or take out a unit thats been on the shelf for a while.

Every 500pts sees a unit of troops. The troops are the first priority for choices when there is a remainder *so IE 2 troops at 750*.

Every 500pts sees 80pts devoted to HQs. That gives an average of 120pts per leader. If they are not used here those points can go elsewhere.

And finally every 500pts leaves 175pts-200pts for support. Support is broken into range support and FA support, with a 3:2 ration of ranged to fast.

One 350+unit per 1500pts, tops.

Some units provide both- such as the venerable dreadnaught wich gets HQ points and provides ranged support.

Bust mostly its flexability. I like units that can in fact do it all... and I try to make every pack and every vehicles I take support that strategy. After all if everything in your army has anti tank they cant get rid of your antitank can they? Same in all other aspects of the game.

I always take SW scouts, just 4 with Melta no wadays. Peeps always split their army up now when i take my wolves out just because of my Sw scouts.

There are certainly good at forcing high pay off targets off the opposing player's table edge.

I love it when IG see my Wolf Scouts get a craving for some basilisk.

Was just wondering do people aim to field the best army they can or do they make allowances for models/units they just like to field.

I incorporate a little bit of both strategies, and do not guide my army list creation to one extreme or the other. Since I only play for fun (and rarely at that) and don't play in any tournaments, I don't have any pressing need to always try to field the "best army". First of all, I'm going to play with what I have, and what I have painted. I try not to make blatantly stupid choices, but at the same time, there is often a unit that I just like to field, and I'll do that just because I think it's cool, regardless of whether it is the best decision. A prime example of this is the Dreadnought; I have always loved them. I've got two each for my Space Wolves, and Grey Knights, and another one for my DIY Marine army. You can make a safe bet, no matter what, that I'm going to include a Dreadnought in every list, just because I like them, and for no other reason.

Considering that I've been collecting my Space Wolves army through 4 versions of the game, some of what I've got that used to be really great in the game, may not be all that effective anymore. Let me give you an example, I've got a Blood Claw Pack with jump packs that was pretty awesome back in 2nd edition; in 3rd/4th, however, they became pretty expensive and rather inefficient. Regardless, I still like them and think they look pretty good, and tend to include them anyway, despite the fact that I could perhaps spend the points more wisely elsewhere.
