From Codex:CSM (p.53): "any number of Chaos Space Marine squads can be 'enhanced'..."

From Codex:CSM (p.26): "Some Chaos Marine squads carry a high proportion of heavy weapons to lay down supporting fire for their brethren. Known as Havoks..."

Doesn't seem a huge leap of logic to say that Havoks can be enhanced since the codex itself states they are Chaos Marine squads (same wording and capitalization).

Haha....

Firstly, fluff does not equal rules, and there're no exceptions to that. Page 26 only has fluff on it, and so by your logic (that every marine in the book is a chaos marine for Fabius rules) you could have enhanced cult troops. S6 berzerkers on the charge? Fearless terminators? Why not?

When you get to the actual rules (armylist), you'll find there's only one squad in the book with the title Chaos Space Marines: Chaos Space Marines. Everything else is named Chaos Raptors, Chaos Havocs, Chaos Bikers. Even when it shows what models are actually in the unit, they are still called Chao Havocs or Chaos Bikers, and not Chaos Space Marines.

Fabius's rules are very clear cut. And fun to use. If you hate giving up cookie units, just take your lance (lash+prince = lance) along, ensuring that your enhanced warriors get into combat even faster. Makes a nice bodyguard for Fabius too.

I would agree with Seahawk, IF it were worded like so:

any number of squads of Chaos Space Marines can be 'enhanced'...

However, the issue comes down to what is a Chaos Space Marine squad. Berzerkers are a Chaos Space Marine squad. Bikers are a Chaos Space Marine squad. In the same way that Marines were affected by Rites of Battle, that is:

...all Space Marine squads...

Wait a minute, there's no such thing as a "Space Marine squad"! Does that mean GW put a useless rule in my codex?

It's a slippery slope, and highly up to interperatation.

@ I am the Awesome: Well, see there still is only one Chaos Space Marine unit in the book. By the name in the army list, a Chaos Biker is not a Chaos Space Marine. Berzerker =/= Chaos Space Marine. They are not spelled the same, for one...

I'd totally upgrade any of my squads if I could, and I really wish I could. The simple answer is that I can't though.

Of course GW didn't FAQ it, as such easy equations are 'beneath' them to answer, like so many other problems...

@ Seahawk, no, there is only one unit of Chaos Space Marines, there are many Chaos Space Marine units in the book. The codex is labeled Codex: Chaos Space Marines, so everything in the book is a unit in Codex: CSM, and so is a CSM unit.

All I'm saying is if that logic is strictly followed, then Rites of Battle never did anything. Because there never was such thing as a "Space Marine" in the 4th Ed codex. Yes, there were Tactical Squads, there were Biker Squads, and there were Assault Squads, but none of those were "Space Marines" per say. THAT'S where my arguement comes from.

EDIT: I know it's generally accepted that you can only upgrade straight-up Chaos Space Marines, I'm just pointing out that technically, other units could be upgraded.
