Noob questions and first army list help.....

I was going to post this in the SW army list subforum, but I realized I had a lot of questions with it, so I am going to post here instead.

I pretty much am limited in what I can do because of what I currently have. So I guess I will start there.

I purchased the space wolf battle force and the assault on black reach set. I am trying to add more as I go.

I am mainly playing my brother against orks, but want to try to tune it up to a 750pt army for the local gaming group as well.

Any C&C would be greatly appreciated.

HQ: Venerable Dreadnought - 173 pts

- MM, DCCW, SB

- EA, SL

Troops: 10 Blood Claws - 224 pts

-10 BP, 8x CCW. 2x PF

-Rhino

Troops: 10 Grey Hunter w/Wolf Guard Leader - 294 pts

- 8x Bolters w/CCW, 2x PP w/PF

- WGL: TDA, Wolf Pelt, Wolf Tooth Necklace, PF, SB

Total: 691

Again I am trying to stick with what I got in the Black Reach and Battle force box set.

Currently using the normal dread as a ven for the HQ though until I can get a real ven. I got the Black Reach tac squad w/sgt, 4 termies, and a Captain left over.

I figured the abundance of PF and 2 PP will help on armor I might face in a 750pt game.

Also is it wise to put the PP and PF on the same models in the Grey Hunter pack? I made all the battle force models last night, so breaking and remaking them isnt really a problem.

I got the 2003 gamesday wolf priest coming in the mail in a few days, so I will prolly swap over to him as my HQ as I was used to fielding a Chaplain in my BA army.

Sorry for the noob questions, but I haven't played since 3rd, and haven't played pups since 2nd.

Thanks much for reading and any C&C offered.

By Russ if I was able to find your question in all that. Lots of facts no questions.

In other words what do ya wanna know Pup?

WG Vrox.

Sorry for being vague.

I figured the abundance of PF and 2 PP will help on armor I might face in a 750pt game, am I right in this assumption or do I have too many PF in my list when I might take normal PW instead to save on some points?

Also is it wise to put the PP and PF on the same models in the Grey Hunter pack or does this even matter?

How can I modify this list to 750 pts with what I got already, including my incoming Wolf Priest?

I havent really played in a long time, so I am just looking for C&C on my list and any improvements that I can make for factors I don't see.

Grey Hunters should have powerweapons at this points level, powerfists are almost always the best choice on a bloodclaw, bar none.

No, dont put a gun that can kill its wielder on a model that already costs twice as much as normal from an upgrade. One bad shot, IE two bad rolls and you can lose 47pts in a blink. Also, itll help with wound alocation in the end. Personally though I reccomend a power weapon on one of those grey hunters... striking at I 4 against orks is really good, as the orks are only I 3... you get to kill them first. Powerfists go at the same time as powerclaws.

Well if you drop your vendread down to a normal dreadnaught and take the wolf priest as your HQ that should even out. You get 68pts from making him a normal dreadnaught, and then you already had 59, so thats 127pts total wich is more than enough to kit out a wolf priest.

If I was going to run this list similar to how you have it set up now Itd be something like this:

Wolf Priest- Standard Gear, Plasmapistol, Runic Charm, Wolf Pelt- 123pts. Tough, survivable, good CC punch, and decent tank hunter with the pistol.

Dreadnaught- Meltagun- 105pts- Cheap, decent Antitank, good CC support against tough targets. Good firemagnet.

9x Bloodclaws- 2x Powerfist, Flamer, in a rhino with extra stormbolter.- 191pts. Good assault unit, put the wolf priest in hear and drop them off in front of an ork mob. If they charge you then you get countercharge and rip them apart with your HQ and BCs. If they learn their lesson and dont charge you show them that you can charge just as well ;).

10x Grey Hunters- 8x Bolters, 2x Powerweapon, 1x Plasmarifle, 1x Plasmapistol- 220pts. Good ranged attack, can hunt tanks and kill Meganobz. Provides firesupport for the bloodclaws, and easily capable of getting "stuck in" by themselves if need be. Run them with the dreadnaught for mutual support.

WGPL- TDA, RC, PF, SB- 58pts. Put him with the grey hunters for a few more shots at ranged, and he can take those annoying rockets from the deathkoptas without a care in the world.

WGBG- Powerweapon, Runic Charm, Bolter, Frags, Mark of the wulfen, wolf tail- 53pts. Not much to do with those last 50 odd points IMHO, so try out the wulfen. He can have an astounding 7 attacks on the charge our counter charge, hitting and being hit on 3's. Sure hes only one model with a single wound... but he can take a bit of shooting off an experianced opponent or can be a huge shock for a newer player. It also gives you a use for that captain model you have laying around.

750pts.

Just my .02, but I really don't think sticking a multi-melta on a VenDred is worth it. Why?

Make your own Hammer on your Black Reach dude and call it an Ironclad, which is a little cheaper, and will allow you for a different VenDred (AC/DCCW/Flamer or SB here).

Aye, I agree with Grey Mage on the Plasma Pistol/Power Fist. ALWAYS give a grey hunter a bolter if you're giving him a powerfist. In 5th addition, you can only get an extra CCW attack for a Power Fist if you have another Power Fist, so slipping him a pistol is pointless, unless you plan on popping off a shot before you assault.

And a Ven Dread is better suited with, say, an Assault Cannon or Plasma Cannon if you're going to have him assaulting. I don't see many running a PC Ven Dread lately, which I find odd, since at BS 5, and a Vehicle, it's tied with Azreal for the most accurate Plasma cannon. No overheating, and scatters 2d6-BS. And in truth, not THAT hard to convert if you're using a plastic dread kit and a plasma cannon from the dev sprue.

As for the Grey Hunters, I'd say you did well in making two squads, one shooty and one assaulty. I try to give my hunters one PW and one PF, just to make them that much more versatile if I need them to be.

Thanks for the sound advice.

The only reason the dread has a MM is that is what he has in the blackreach set. We could do house rules but we are trying to stay WYSIWYG.

I am playing him now in turn 4 against orks with about 775 points currently and I need ordinance so bad.
