crimson fists - the beginning to an end

Before the destruction of Rynn's World, Captain Sebastian Lopez's Company were busy fighting on Toras, a forge world on the Eastern Fringes of the Imperium against Chaotic Forces. They received messages asking for aid but were unable to leave orbit for fear of losing the Toras campaign and losing the forge world. Captain Sebastian realised the scale of this invasion only too late and set about destroying any chaotic forces and leaving a stable warzone in the hands of the Imperial Guard. He and his Company raced to the aid of Chapter Master Kantor and rendezvoused with him at New Rynn City after the Ork threat had already been stabilised. Sebastian curses himself for not arriving earlier and will do everything in his power to win back the honour of the Crimson Fists!!!!

Well, I've been working on the crimson fists for about a month now. I'm quite pleased with them - only when I took the pictures I realised that even though they look really quite nice on the tabletop they aren't that marvellous up close. However I've tried hard and have pulled out an almost (and believe me, almost) legal force with which to play with. Firstly though - I would greatly appreciate critiscism as in my eyes it is the only way I will improve, not to say I dont want positive comments - (I'm fairly happy with how they came out) - but please be nice! also - I hope to have the command squad finished soon and was torn between a plasma gun or another Powerfist for overkill frequency.

This was my test piece and I think I did reasonably well on the face, however a little tidying up is in order for the future.

Now here is my Company standard bearer, a bit of a beauty if you don't mind me saying, the fist is merely a transfer painted over the top. :D

Captain Sebastian himself! He is holding the record (which can't actually be broken lol) for the first commander I've ever properly finished.

The Apothecary - I'm overjoyed with how the helmet came out and the eyes. However I have removed the shoulder pad with the apothecary symbol because it was fairly tricky to paint and my white wouldn't have done the model any favours.

Company Champion, again I'm quite pleased with the highlighting on this one. First time I've tried highlighting, pretty tricky to master. I'll need a bit more practice.

Company Veteran 1 - I plan to have another veteran, though what do people think is better, a plasma gun for devastating ranged damage which my squad lacks or another powerfist for overkill combat?!

My pride and joy! Razorback Rynn's Vengeance under the command of 3rd Company Captain Sebastian Lopez. I am ecstatic with how this turned out, the lenses I think are really good - Badab black wash has made the metal look nice and weathered and the snow scatter adds a nice touch. I chose snow because I have some snow scatter spare and because I wanted to add a bit more storyline later on... also - I'm really pleased with how the cloth on the front came out.

Deffwolf, I would love to hear from you all.

Also, I'm eager to get better at painting, that is what makes warhammer so good for me. Please post any tips you have for a budding teenage painter to get better. Also - Im happy to answer any queries about the army structure as it isnt posted. Like special weapons etc. I havent posted the 1500 points army list yet as I didnt think it was relevant.

They all look pretty good, I think your green purity seals look a little odd but probably just because im so used to seeing red ones. Your eyes could use a bit of work but otherwise I think the models are very neatly done, I dont even attempt highlighting because I cant seem to get it right but yours looks good. A little bit of the metal work could use touching up on the apothicary, and all boltgun metal bolters look odd, mabey try grey or red cases and just leave the barrels and details metal.

Overall, theyer good keep up the good work.

Edited to make a bit more sense.

Well thanks jester_prince, it helps to have C&C, though I couldn't get a close up on the eyes I'm afraid. I was quite happy with how they turned out. The boltgun metal bolters were purely to save time as I don't have enough time usually to paint black and red etc. though thanks for the comment. The green purity seal was to contrast with red in the model if you know what i mean? otherwise it would only have had 3 colours - red, blue, silver. Does the background sound believable? I'm a bit concerned...that might just be because this is the first "big" post I've done and so I'm a little nervous as to people's reactions.

If you don't mind me saying, your own space marines look fantastic, do you use flash when you take pictures and how close from? i struggled getting some good pictures out with my dad.

A limited pallat on a mini is NEVER a bad thing, you get too many colours on a mini and it starts to feel like your playing rainbow happy marines. Just because you have the colours dosnt mean you should use every single one of them.

Useing 3-4 colours is great, most people do, they just use different shades of the same colour to highlight. The only things I would suggest is getting a badab black wash over your metalics, especialy on the champion, help it bring out the detail of that nice armour.

I use a flash when takeing my pics, but only becasue my room gets no natural light, I also have a fairly decent camera on my phone so I can take pictures up close, I dont actualy own a real camera, my pics arnt perfect but they arnt the worst. Your pics looks fine to me so your doing something right, I have really shakey hands, so taking a picture up close is a nightmare, painting is even worse :).

The only problem I can see with your fluff, is that if Kantor managed to stabilize the situation anyway then wernt needed. Not unless they suffered huge losses, or even total losses (except kantor obviously).

Some quick thoughts:

Clean your flash and mold lines, drill your barrels, and in general clean up the models. The little extra effort really makes the models look that much better.

Don't drybrush your marines. It's a messy technique that requires a lot of practice and refinement to be able to do it well enough en masse to justify it. Stick with basecoats and highlights, using washes to help define the recesses.

Dilute your paints at all stages. It helps your paints go on smoother and prevents that "chunked up paint" look/

Personally, i liked the green purity seals, considering doing them myself, only the other way round to yours, green tail white head, after all, it =s not that much of a difference, and im sure they have green paper and white or green wax in the 41st millenium

I'm guessing it's the flash from your camera, but..

The blue looks wrong to me. Too light. Also, I imagine them as being more clunky and cumbersome, but that's just me. I tend to think of them as wearing robes and carrying off as much of their stuff from the fallen fortress as they can. Sort of half nomad, half Black Templar.
