1000 Point Tournament Recap

Played in my first ever tournament at a local game shop on Saturday here in the bay area and thought I'd post the results on here and ask wargear question about deamon princes since I don't own a codex. Tournament had 42 players with 3 rounds of predetermined scenarios on a 4x4 table.

HQ:

Wolf Priest (Frags, Wolf Pelt, Wolf Tooth Talisman)

Armor:

Land Raider

Vindicator

Predator Destructor (Lascannons)

Troops:

Grey Hunters x6

Blood Claws x 8 (Power Weapon x1, Power Fist x1)

Elites:

Scouts x4 (Power Weapons x1, Melta Gun x1)

Fast Attack:

Attack Bike W/ Multi-Melta

Transport:

Razorback W/ Lascannon

Game 1: Seize Ground/ Dawn of War

I played against chaos marine player that ran a double lash of submission deamon princes (winged), two 10 man plague marine squads with one greater deamon. We rolled for objectives and wound up with 5 which made it hard for both armies since we each only had 2 troop choices. My initial strategy was to setup with a refused flank and use my superior long range shooting to target his deamon princes then clean up his squads. I ran into problems taking down his three deamons since he rolled great on his saves (my rules question is tied to this) and they did a lot of damage to me before I took them down. The game went 7 turns and at the end of the game I had 3 grey hunters on an objective my predator and an immobilized land raider and he had two plague marine on another objective so the game ended as a draw.

My question is my opponent was taking 4+ invulnerable saves for his deamon princes but looking at their stat line they have a 5+ invul. I'm not familiar with the codex at all so I don't know if they have a wargear upgrade to gain that ability. He was also taking a 3+ armour save for his Greater Deamon which I know is wrong. This would've made an obvious big impact on our game so I'm just curious as I'll be playing against a similar list on Thursday (He won the tournament).

Game 2: Capture and Control/ Spearhead

Game was against a Sisters of Battle army that had one Excorcist and the rest was battle sisters with two squads of Seraphins with inferno pistols and a Cannoness. This was a pretty one sided game since he had nothing that could really contest my objective beyond he Seraphins and with my superior long range shooting I basically shelled him for 3 turns with my armor before assaulting with my blood claws and scouts and we called the game after 4 turns since he was down to 1 sister while I held both objectives and had only lost 4 blood claws.

Game 3: Annihilation / Pitched Battle

This was a pretty unique game as I faced a dual land raider list with Khorne Bezerkers and Khârn in one of them. Given the huge disparity of kill points in our armies I knew I'd have to wipe him out to win. We had one our game stores urban maps so the terrain consisted of two parallel streets lined with buildings with a river that divides the board in half and it ran from the back edges. He had first deployment and set up one of his land raiders on each street up at the front of his deployment zone. I focused my army to one side with the plan of divide and conquer. His first turn consisted of both land raiders moving 12" then deploying smoke. My attack bike destroyed the near land raider turn one and and the squad was destroyed by the following vindicator, Land Raider and predator fire. This all but ended the game and in turn 2 I set up a gun line using the river to my advantage to knock out both of his lascannons on the other land raider and my wolf scouts outflanked and destroyed it. His Bezerkers took out my scouts but were gunned down by my tanks on the following turn.

Overall I was really pleased with how my army played seeing how I did no play testing with this list. I was considering dropping the land raider for some bikes or another infantry squad but in a game that small most armies having trouble handling that much armor. I also wanted the mechanized force to help counter the Lash of Submission and mechanized Ork lists I knew would be played. At the end I finished 2 wins and a draw and of the three armies I played only 2 enemy marines were left standing. I was awarded 3rd place because they used different tie breakers such as holding all the objectives in those scenarios or wiping out the other army in game which I had 3 points lifting me above the other armies with the same record. I also was recognized for sportsmanship which was an unexpected surprise

In the future I might drop the attack bike to beef up the blood claw squad but I was really impressed by how it played especially in countering and corralling Land Raiders.

If anyone knows the answer to the deamon prince / greater deamon save question please let me know, I don't think he was cheating but that is was a simple error and I also need to take responsibility to pay more attention to the other person's list.

Yep the list was illegall he needed 2 HQ.

And as for the Chaos player, he got 1st by cheating, wether he knew it or not. Deamon princes have +1 I with Mark of Slaanesh and just 5+ Inv save (they get a 4+ inv save with Mark of Tzeentch, but as he had the other Mark he couldn't have taken this one as well.). The Greater deamon only has a 4+ Inv save.

The tournament organizer set it up so that I could play with 1 HQ to make the playing field level at that point level. Also thank you for the clarification Deamon invulnerable saves. I should have clarified that up there so I apologize for any confusion there.

Thor,

I made a typo on the number of Grey Hunters, the list only had 5. However, that in itself is illegal since the minimum squad size is 6 and that was a simple mental error on my part.
