ChainsawDR
Hi all, I've got myself a Land Raider, and I'm very jealous of the pics of other Land Raiders that I've seen with the Forge World doors on. My Land Raider is already built and has normal doors built and glued on so getting the Forgeworld versions are out of the question. I really like the "texture" of the doors, apart from trying to sculpt some using green stuff, are there any alternatives out there? Like the patterns minus the actual doors, that I can glue onto any surface? Cheers all. Grey Mage
I just used a couple of space wolf icons from the drop pod sets on mine, with one icon from a grey hunter box. Looks fine IMHO. I got the spare drop pod signs from a friend of mine... and gave him the imperial fist ones in return. Everybodys happy. Yeti
Forgeworld sells SW icon packs which have some of the same imagery on them. The sculpts are much smaller than on the land raider doors, but they are still really nice. Here's a link to an image of my Blood Claws Rhino with an example of SW icons from the FW icon pack. There is a smaller version of what you'll find on the LR doors and you can sorta make out one of the smaller icons in the front of the Rhino http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii14/Ye.../Charles052.jpg Another potential alternative is the FW Etched Brass with SW iconography ... I'll be picking up my set on Thursday and I'll let you know what they look like. PS: Where can I find the size limits for images I can add to my album ... I've looked but can't seem to find them? Edited: to add pic. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164636-sw-land-raider-doors/#findComment-1936033 Share on other sites
Ryzouken
you could try buying the doors, using them to make a GS mould that you could then use to faux-sculpt your existing doors. Then when you get that second (or third, or fourth) raider, you have doors! Max_Dammit
Id go for the FW icons and maybe the brass icons, and than GS some pelts and stuff. http://members.home.nl/maxdammit/40k/wip/wip_vin_l.jpg http://members.home.nl/maxdammit/40k/wip/wip_vin_r.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164636-sw-land-raider-doors/#findComment-1936257 Share on other sites
Doc Faolan
Max- what size is the chain? In both "links per inch" which seems to be how they sell them, and then the actual MM length of the chains? :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164636-sw-land-raider-doors/#findComment-1936614 Share on other sites
Ullr Direfang
i would have to say that using the FW icon set would probably be best. unless you are good at making GS molds, i am not, then that way might be a good little project. Grey Mage
Max- what size is the chain? In both "links per inch" which seems to be how they sell them, and then the actual MM length of the chains? :( Looking at it and comparing it to my jewelry making supplies *sidebuisness* and my rhino Im betting its 20 gage wire, and about 12 links per inch, maybe 10. Hope that helps. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164636-sw-land-raider-doors/#findComment-1937823 Share on other sites
ChainsawDR
Thanks for the replies guys. you could try buying the doors, using them to make a GS mould that you could then use to faux-sculpt your existing doors. I like the sound of that, would you mind explaining a bit please? I'm guessing you make an impression by pushing the door into the green stuff, then wait for the GS to harden, but then what do you do? Do you apply fresh GS then carefully take out the fresh GS before it hardens and attaches to the impression? Or do I need to apply anything to the impression to keep them from sticking together? I like the sound of doing this as I'm always one item short when I'm modelling, and if I could get the knack of it then I can make my own lil bits here and there. Thanks again. Grey Mage
Well you could do it with greenstuff, or you could grab some clay and let it harden around the form tell its very very dry... it depends on how long your going to use the mold. Then you coat the mold with a very thin layer of oil, a heavy layer of pam, or some vasseline works just fine... press in the new green stuff, and wait. Yeti
Picked up my brass etch today ... looks totally cool. Plenty of SW iconography. They've even got runic license plates for your vehicles! About the only downside is that, like most SW stuff, Ragnars company markings are pretty prominent. But since it's a big wolf head ... and we're space wolves ... shouldn't be too hard to fit it into your overall scheme. If certainly won't give you the depth of the resin doors, but it'll look very good and you can glue it straight onto the paint. A little varnish to prevent tarnishing and you're done. ChainsawDR
After spending a good 30+ hours on my Land Raider, I think it'd be a shame if I didn't at least try and customise it a tad. I've decided to go for a Ragnar army anyway so that would be ideal for me. I've got to wait until the end of the month until I get my first pay from my new work, so as soon as I do I'll be ordering the doors, Green Stuff and the brass etch (I've got 1 Bjorn, 1 Dread, 1 LR, 1 WW, 3 Rhinos & 3 Preds that I can use them all on). I've bookmarked this thread so when its all here and I've done them, I'll post some pics. Cheers again for the help guys. deedark
I bought 2 sets of rhino's door and an icons pack They aint cheap so on my 2 Rhinos I use the side doors and on my Pred and W/Wind I used the front armour plates Worked out well looks good, used the icons throughout vehicles and Dread Dont own a Landraider, but feel that I'd invest in doors for it if I bought one D. Ryzouken
On the green stuff moulding, I'm not sure I'd wait for the mould to set before removing the original. It seems a good way to bollocks the procedure up and have to recast. I'd make a blob of greenstuff, push it onto the greased door, gently tap it until it releases, then let it set while I washed my spiffy FW doors clean. But then, I didn't much bother with such things for my three raiders. I had a time constraint which lent to my decision, but in the end FW stuff is expensive! Plus, I'm just not that great a painter. Grimfoe
I had some custom sculpts done for me by a guy in Poland. He was very good and very reasonable. I can get you his information if you like. PM me if you're interested. Good Luck. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164636-sw-land-raider-doors/#findComment-1940860 Share on other sites
Max_Dammit
As i can judge the FW doors, i doubt there any good to cast with GS, there is to much depth Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/164636-sw-land-raider-doors/#findComment-1940888 Share on other sites
