WIP Emperor's Champion

My army ADD has brought me around to the Black Templar. I think this one may stick. I took a look at some of the plastic kits available, and decided that the first thing I would work on is making my Emperor's Champ, given that he is the one model I know I will always be fielding.

Bits used:

Runefang from the Empire General box

Kneeling legs and head from the Space marine command squad box

Tabard, backpack, and bolt pistol from the Black Templar upgrade sprue

I am not quite happy with the sword atm, as it is a touch crooked, but I would appreciate any feedback on the concept and potential ideas for the right arm. Originally, I wanted to have him with a bowed head and his right fist against his chest as if praying, but couldn't get the look right. At any rate, I'm pretty happy with him atm.

Before I read the post I was thinking that sword looks a little crooked, but after reading, its good that you noticed it.

Apart from that the model looks great, the posture is unique and the flowing tabbard looks awesome!

looking forward to seeing some paint

Another great use of the kneeling legs! I like this very much, it sits very well with the imagery that the Emperor's Champion conjers up in its look, but here he is at rest, perhaps uttering a prayer to his namesake, or swearing an oath. I think if you very gently bend the runefang forward it'll fix the bendy arm problem without too much hassle. I look forward to seeing how you paint him up.

could you maybe get the arm with the bolt pistol held down by his side, either with the hand flat to the floor or holding a shield (would help convey the knightly feel)... its a lovely idea though and very nicely realised. hope you do it justice on the paint job :)

I did something similar to this recently, I think a good move might be to actually remove the BP from the hand and have it empty, or clutching a medallion/prayer beads type of thing (or 40k equivalent) with the BP on the ground or holstered. If you'd like to see my take on the idea feel free to check out my WIP Templars but I won't post pics as not to threadjack you.

I really like the concept of an EC praying or taking his vow and I think you've done it well. Perhaps to straighten the sword you could cut off a bit of the tip to make it seem plunged into the ground and then lower the arm to straighten.

Good luck and continue updating as the idea evolves!

Thanks for the input, everyone. I fiddled with the sword a bit, and I think it looks straighter. I also made a Marshal based on the AoBR commander.

I like some of the ideas for his pistol hand. My current thought is to use the rolled up scroll from the BT upgrades held in a fist. Right now I am trying to decide if that arm would look better at his side or raised to the heavens, along with the appropriate shifting of the angle of his head.

I've got to be honest, the BTs have me more inspired than I have

been in a long time, so I may fire up a blog as I build them.

I think clutching the scroll is a great idea. I'd say clutch it in close, kind of where the BP is right now. Like he has just read the vow and and is now affirming it within himself. Righteous anger and what not. If you do start a blog, I think I shall be close behind as I redo my Templars.

With Honor, Brother Templar.

New pics up in my new BT blog.

Pics for those who don't like blogs .

really loving both these models, the poses are perfect, but the sword and hand is still not right on the champ imo:

to me, this is whats wrong

hopefully its fairly self explanatory, but basically, the grip, blade, and hand dont line up. easiest way to fix it imo would be to change the sword blade and grips position by moving them back slightly, then lining the blade up to the side of the hand. for this you may have to cut the very tip off the sword so it stands right, but i think this may work to your advantage, as it will look like the end is sort of buried into the ground. thought the amount youd have to cut of would be so tiny that you probably wouldnt notice it anyway.

other than that these are really top notch conversions, and i look forward to seeing more :D

cheers

I looooove your Emperor's Champion :)

Where from comes the sword ? Can you make a tutoriel for this champion ? (please, please ^^)

Cheers

The sword comes from the Empire General kit. It also comes with a pretty sweet banner, and I plan to use the horse for my VCs. It's entirely possible you could find that separately. I believe it's called a Runefang.

There's honestly not much of a tutorial to be had, since it was mostly the result of looking at my progress and saying "Ok, what do I need to do now?"

Basically, it's the kneeling legs, plus a tabard torso from the Templar upgrades. The low end of the tabard hangs below his feet, but I knew I was going to have to elevate him anyway to get his sword to the ground, so I just had to be careful placing him on the rock. The sword arm is from the Command Squad box. It was initially holding a power sword. The arm holding the scroll originally had another power weapon in it, and also came from the command squad sprue. The scroll is from the Black Templar upgrades. I basically just cut out the skull that was binding it together and placed it onto his hand so it would look like he was clenching his fist. The arm holding the scroll is just a bolter arm so that it would be modeled inward toward his body.

@g-relk

Thanks for the input on the sword. I have been wrestling with whether to have the end in the ground or not, since the Black Sword is supposed to be some sacred relic, but it would definitely make life easier from a modeling perspective. Your illustration on the sword hand is helpful, as well.

how difficult was it placing the BT tabard on the commander body from AOBR?

your Emp. Champion, I have the same premise. I plan on attempting to have both arms holding a sword or having one pressed against his chest in prayer. Since i am obsessed with beakie heads I am using a beakie head, which will be bowed down in reverence. I think with a beakie head, its much easier to tilt down and make it seem real. but my guy is just going to be a regular veteran marine gonna make it a diorama piece.

I can't get over how great both look, they are going to look awesome when your done with them. I think your gaming buddies will be in awe. Honestly. Great thinking.

Now that I remember it, the BT tabard didn't fit with the AoBR dude's knee. That tabard is actually from the command squad sprue, with the BT torso with the high collar. A bit of cut and paste so that I could reposition the tabard fixed it up.

Thanks for the kind words :)
