Vandael's Iron Warriors WIP

Hello again,

There will be no SCT for this one because in order to make a complete tutorial I would have to make another one!

I can however make a breakdown of the bits used & how to fasten them on the model. I hope the pictures give more insight in "how to" So here we go:

The Legs:

Defiler claws with the 'fingers' positioned backwards. Now he has 3 toes. For the heels I used the Defilers feet.

I've cut the 'knives' from the legs to position them on the upper leg.

I've cut the round tubing from the lowerleg and applied some custom pistons in order to place the legshield.

For the tubing on the back of the legs I've used different sizes of electric wire. They are fastend in 'the round plastic bits' that are on any sprue. Be sure to drill them before you cut them of the sprue.

The hips:

Take the frontsection (where the hull & pincers ussually are attached) of the Defilerchaissis and cut/saw it off.

Be sure how you want your standing Defiler positioned before you glue the legs on.

To cover the gap that's beeing caused by bisecting the chaissis I've used a vehicle shield/hatch and decorated it with the halfcirled spikeybits.

In chain that you see is bought at a DIYjewelerystore. It took me some time to find the right size 40k-wise. Just wrap it around at your leisure. When I knew how I wanted it I'd glued it at each corner to be sure it stayed in position.

I've used various Chaos vehicle & spikeybit sprues to decorate the hips. They are easy to see so I'm not going deeper into this bit.

Hull:

I've used the back of the Defilers hull as it's front. I've covert the gap in the back by using the battlecannon basis of the Defiler but inverted it into the hull. Don''t forget to cut of the barrel with the daemonhead you'll need it later.

The Daemonhost is mercilessly drilled and tubed with guitarwires and electronicwires. These are carfully bent backwards and placed into a hole I've made into a vehicle hatch before the model is placed in postion.

The twinlinked heavybolter are two CSM heavybolters stacked with deamonmaws added.

The chains are attaced to the hull with paperclippieces that are glued into the hull.

The cablewrithing closecombat weapons are a bassguitar wire with bits form the Defiler's cc weapon and the knifes from the Defilers reaper autocannon.

The rest are obviously chaos vehicle bits.

Rightarm:

The shoulder is an vehicle shield/hatch.

The arm is mainly created from the Defilers legs.

Upperarm is made from two pairs of the upperlegs from the Defiler. I've carfully cut & filed at the knee joints. Glue 1st pair of the legs (with the ballthingy) together. Now file and/or cut anything that sticks out on the sides because now you need to add the same pair on top of the first. You'll need to cut of the ballthingy things of this pair or otherwise you'll have no room in order to fasten the arm on later.

The middsection of the arm is made roughly the same as the topsection only with the lowerhalf of the Defilers legs (two pairs). The piston connecting these arms are cut of from the same legs. The 'feet' are cut of, they are used elsewher in the model (heels & claw). The 'knives'are cut of from the legs and repositioned as well as the Defilers legsshielding. The tubing are again electric wire and guitarwire.

The lowerarm is made the same way as the midsection. On the wrist I've added the Defilers powerplant.

The powerclaw are the 2 leftover 'Defilerfeet' and 2 'knives'from the legs stuck together. I've used a saw, knife and file to carfully make a gap in the middle where I've fastend the CSM chainswords.

Leftarm:

For the shoulder I've used the same bits as for the rightarm. I only needed to put a base inside the hull in order to fill the gap.

The upperarm is made from 3 dreadnoughtarms pui in a U. and various bits; rhinovent, demolisher loader, terminatorvent, CoD lampposttop and chaos vehicle/spikeybits.

The arm was made from the upperhalf of an Defilerleg with an vehicleauspex at the end. On top you'll see CSM termieLord spikes.

The GUN:

CoD smallwallsections, 2 vehicle hatches (fron and back of gun), Defiler reapercannon on each side and again the wirework.

The loader is made of demolisher shells linked together (filled with greenstuff) onto 2 vindicator castlewalls (really don't know how to call these otherwise).

The cannon is made of CoD mechanicus chimmeny with the Defilercannon attached. The knives are from an IG Chimera Dozerblade.

The chains are wrapped around in all different ways and glued (and attached with paperclip) at stratigic points in order to keep them from moving.

Pheewww, re-reading this makes it look easy, and actually it is. The most important thing thought is to keep your cool and have patience. Carfully plan everything before you attach anything and clean up the moldlines. Be carfull when cutting because although it's mostley plastic some pieces are more though.

I hope that this awnsers the questions for those who where wondering in which, what & how. If any other questions arise I'm happy to awnser them for you all :D

ATM I'm in the process of painting (some WIP will follow) and hope that it will do the model justice in the end.

Cheers,

Vandael

Hello again,

No, this is not a thread necromancy this is a thread ressuraction.

The past year I've been so buysy with other stuff that I've been kinda neglacting my Iron Warriors. After surfing the web and some posts here I feel inspired to continue my work.

All the base stuff is coverd and now I'm starting with all the details on my models.

At the moment I have even started on throwing some paint on my Deamonic Deathengine. At first I was so happy that I've finished the model that I was scared that my paintjob wouldn't live up to it. No more I tell you! His time has come.

Picture updates soon!

@Skirax: Ooooh, that is nice indeed, 2 bad you can't post any pics here (unless it's inducted guard  )

@Vulkan 454: Thnx, although I'm going to use it as a stand-in(g) Defiler. And he isn't as chunkie as an Stompa in real life.

@Laeradex: Mounted on the base he's 7 inches tall. His knees are a bit bended. If you make one more upright and add some extra layers at the hips or give him a head on top you can reach 9 inches easy.

Atm I'm at work and yesterday and I could not find the time to take some pics. But today I'll give a full update.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/UnnamedDefiler.jpg

And the WIP of my 'unnamed Defiler.

Not planning on fielding this badboy untill he's finished.

I've been playing 40k since the late Rogue trader and really start collecting during the 2d edition so I still have lots of stuff laying around. Suffering from the syndrome of buying but not painting and deciding what I want. Cult troops, deamons, traitor guard, beastmen. And just when you think you have decided a new dex or rulebook comes out, pffff.

Most of this stuff used to be my Black Legion prior to conversion into Iron Warriors. I was tired of looking at the same colour scheme and I could not get the highlights right. I'd always loved the IW fluff & colours and after reading Storm of Iron I was sold!

My main goal here was to create a finished army at a higher standard than my old ones. To make it more IW I have added the conversion set from mailorder, IW shoulder guards & Chaos Warrior bits. Plus I've tried to combine as many different bits as possible making sure no model is alike.

The models shown here are in their base coat of colours. The stuff I yet have to do: Inkting, shading & highlights. paint the lenses. And add markings & IW logo's. Not to forget chevrons and some static grass for the base. After that I'm going to rumble though the model/bitsbox & add stuff as I find it. I'm set on finishing something before I'll buy anything new. So I'll be finishing my army squad, by squad & treat myself to do some Defiler work now and then.

Too bad most of the models where already assembled. Otherwise I would have gotten a go at it with Kikkala's excellent bionics, who knows in the future.

Thanks to everyone for looking at my stuff. All the work & soft peerpressure here on the forum is a great insperation & motivator to keep on going.

Cheers,

Vandael

Thanks Fulminata,

The reason because I've chosen to pick purple power weapons was because of that reason. Blue made made the models a bit bleak and this looks more evil hahahaha :cuss

Here is a pick of what I've been up to. Not a dramatic change at first look but....

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/2Marines.jpg

I've been redefining a squad, and here you see two models.

The gold has had a wash of brown inkt & a re-highlight of some burnished gold.

The shoulderspads needed a new black coat afterward.

And I've been putting a blotch of black inkt in all the nooks & crannies.

I'd also tried to "do" the eye lenses but it's though. I't does not stop me from trying though.

More pics will be posted when more work is done, mainly;

weapons, details and chevrons.

C & C welcome as always.

Thanks for looking, cheers.

Hello again,

At the moment I've got some time to spare so here are some pictures I want to share.

It's my first squad near completion! These boys are awaiting their final highlights, detail work and legion markings. When I was working half way I'd saw that the champ & icon carrier are from another squad  . Well, in the end they will al get their original place.

Hopefully they will be finished this weekend so I can relish in my own self esteem. This will be my first squad that had gotten the full 9 yards properly.

First part of the squad fron & side.

Second part of the squad front & side.

Any C & C out there before Ill finish up?

My first squad is finished. The only thing I`m doubting about is what SM helm will be on the spike.

Hello again,

After one week of relentless work on one of my squads I kept having this nagging feeling. It where the wispers of the unholy deamon Primarch Pertubaro. My webboard needs waxing because I've been surfing for insperation and found it! Although I'm satisfied with my squad setup so far I wanted to take them to the next level.

After seeing many armies with bolter en cc mixt I have set myself on a new agenda Iron Warrior style. I've bought another box of CSM and going to use it with my bit box and older models. My mission: add close combat AND bionics to my existing troops. This will result (I hope) in a more diverse (chaotic) and bionic (Iron Warriorish) army. Also this alows me to switch between projects of modeling and painting to keep the juices flowing. I really can't commit myself to either for an extended period of time.

Before I throw myself in a total overhaul I'm going to sort them out first and will start with the units I use most. This way I can keep up with my intentional repaint and have a battle worthy army ready soon.

I'll be posting some WIP of my work here so you people out there can gimme some constructive c & c.

Cheers,

Hello there,

Time for an update.

ATM I'm working on some regular troops. Adding bionics to cc en bolter chaos marines.

Here is some WIP of my squadleaders. My Warriors are going to be led into battle by these "doghousestyle" truescaled champs.

Good day,

As I was pondering a couple of post ago, about adding bionics and using Kikkala's tutorial. Well:

Close Combat Iron Warriors with bionics

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/CCbionics.jpg

I have used Kikkala's ideas but tinkerd with it here and there because I don't have the same materials and CSM are a bit different from loyalist dogs. But anyway: thanks for the tut!

As you can see I've also used some servitor arms on some of the marines. Those where easy to do. For the arm & leg bionics I've really needed to get into it and experiment.

These models are still WIP because I need to complete 3 more CC marines. After those are made I will be adding green stuff to fill the gaps and stuff.

Cheers,

Hello again,

It's been a while as my attention has been drawn to other hobbies of intrest. But after roaming the board for a while (again) and filled with insperation I'm back.

I've been working on some terrain because we have been battleling with some painted and (mostly) plastic buildings and some new scenery was in order. I'm not sure pics of those are wanted (or allowed).

The next (redifined) squad I'm going to work on are my IW Bezerkers with their new AC. I will be posting some WIP soon.

My models will eventually get some extra weathering (Devlan Mud washes). But only after I finished my main squads. I want to them all in one (relative) go to get an even result.

The "Deamonic Deathengine" standing Defiler will get some work later on this year. I'm keeping work on that baby as an reward after I've finished some more squads. Hopefully my paintingskills will have improved to the point that will do the conversion worth.

Cheers,

Hello there,

As I've written before ia m currently working on my Bezerkers.

Because I was not sure how they would end up I decided to make a test model.

Thanks Firestorm40k,

Here is an quick update of my Iron Warriors Bezerkers.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/BezerkerWIP.jpg

Almost as good as done, but I need to do the weapons and some small touching up. I't going to be a busy week for me so I wanted to share this WIP because I'n not sure there will be any time for them later.

I've decided to incorperate my own IW colourscheme save for the helmets and left shoulderpad. Eventually I will be adding blood n' gore on the chainweaponry just to point out that they are in it for the BLOOD!!!!

Hello fellow battlebrothers,

No, I'm not finished with my Bezerkers (yet), because I was distracted by another project.

Modular trenches, because why bother with Iron Warriors if you can't get some trenches now and then?

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/trenches.jpg

I really wanted some but buying pre-fab is expensive and I don't have any room to spare for a full board. I'm still constructing some extra pieces and once I finished those I'll go onto the painting!

Cheers,

Ahoy from the warp!

As seen before on my WIP-posts here I'm not the project-bound type. Torn between converting, painting & terrain I always find other stuff to do before I really finish something. But as a whole I'm progressing with the hobby though.

Yes an update! I've got some excellent conversion bits online and put together these new guys:

Bionics for the bionical:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/Bionicsfront.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/Bionicsside.jpg

These guys were created to finish some squadoptions I needed and gave me the chance to try out the new conversion stuff I bought. Also a thanks to fellow Warsmith SB who made an excellent autocannon to draw insperation of.

And here is a big un, Termie Captain/champ:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/Termiefront.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/Vandael/Termierear.jpg

I had this termielord lying around and couldn't figuere what to do with him. I finished him with new shoulder pauldrons, twin lightningclaws and added a combi-melta to his servo-arm.

Hope you people enjoy it.

Cheers,

Vandael
