Finished My First Salamander Combat Squad

I am Legion

Recommended Posts

I decided to skip over the WIP photos and just wait till I was finished to post them here. You may remember my sergeant from a month ago in the group pic, but here is the first 5xTAC painted. After taking the pictures I noticed that the drilled out part of the bolters need to be painted black. OOPS....

Enjoy and tell me what you think.

Thanks guys! This was alot of work for me, and I'm glad someone likes them.

The camo was originally supposed to be scales, but it really didn't look like it, though it did look like camo, which is something I kinda wanted anyway. So it's all good.

The decals didn't go on perfectly flat, and I don't know how to get them flat on the pad! One day when I get a stensil made up, I'll use that to put on the insignia.

Two things will help with the decals:

1. If you take a sharp as death hobby knife, you can slice through the wrinkle and flatten it out with some water.

2. If you paint over the "clear" parts of the decal, around the edges, it will stay on better and will look less like a decal. (i.e., if you paint black over the bits that aren't the salamander head, it'll look better). This will also prevent it from drying out and flaking off later on down the road, which can some times happen even if you seal it.

Beyond those two things, they look awesome! I really like the bipod on the dude with the auspex!

The squad looks great...love the reflected light from the lava. I keep saying I'm going to come up with an excuse where I'll need to figure out how to do that.

For the decals, it is really a pain to get decals to set right on a double curve such as a shoulder pad. If you have micro sol and/or micro set available to you, you can use it to get the decals to adhere better to your figures. Also you might want to try a layer of 'ardcoat on the shoulder pad before you put the decal on. Decals usually work better on a gloss undercoat.

Looking great! The Sergeant is totally awesome, fantastic pose. Another handy tip for the decals is to make a few cuts in them before applying, although if you do this you will have to be more careful while applying it. I tend to make them between the "spines" on the back of the head, and between the jaws of the symbol.
