I tried searching for this topic and after 5 of 21 pages I got bored. Is army builder suitable for creating a Space Wolf list? And Importantly does it have a feature where I can create an apocalypse list without force restriciton charts? Please help me as I don't want to spend £20-30 on software I won't use.

Hi,

yes AB will do a SW list for you, and yes it will do an Apocalypse list too. Bear in mind that you'll need to download the SW file for it, and IMHO it's not perfect.

Whether the software is value for money.. Well I bought it and after 2 years I'm still not sure if I like it that much.

Get the "trial" version and have a play around first.

The biggest thing I really see against AB with Space Wolves is the fact they say SWs don't get the new Shotgun profile from the Space Marine Codex. Other than that, they say SWs in TDA can't get Wolf Tail Talismans and the like, and other creative differences with their Dev team, Army Builder works great.

To each thier own, I say. I've never had any problems with AB and I've used it for many years. The new 5th edition version even has caught all the little bugs I noticed with the fourth ed version and would recommend it to anyone.

Particularly if you are going to be entering any tournaments. Not so much for yourself but for your opponents, as you can have the printout detail who has what wargear and what each piece does.

@ Spacefrisian Excel interesting I just don't know how to set up points costs and be able to select from a lsit like in army builder. Not used excel since about 2000 Would be cheaper though

Just typing them down and using the codex for points (that is until you have memorized youre most used items) than you will not need the dex anymor to put everything in it.

If you enter the wargear into a chart on one worksheet, you can use "look up" functions referencing that sheet for the list. It's not that hard, and I've often thought of doing it myself, but I've limited time and there's always talk of a new codex right around the corner (for at least 2+ years that I've been lurking around this board anyway)

Anyway, it's not a bad idea and you may like it. Probably not worth spending the time just to save a couple of bucks, but the end product could be customized nicely and you may really like it.

Pad and paper, I wouldnt trust an army builder list personally. It sure looks official, but the people that make them are human for starters, and you can edit out any and all of that information for second. Who knows.... 15pt Grey Hunters or some such crap.

I usually go the pen and paper approach for designing an army, but my handwriting is so horrible I just find it impolite to give my opponent such a hard time reading it. If you have more than one army, go the Army Builder way, but if you only have one, maybe a spreadsheet is good enough.

Some other wolf lord (Wolf Lord Bill, thanks again!) came up with the idea, I just copied it: Have a 'template' for each squad type you use and then adjust quantities accordingly: Excel will handle the calculations. When you have created enough templates (one for every troop type you take - copy/paste should do this remarkably faster) just copy and paste it as many times as necessary, fill in the numbers for the options of that particular pack and be done. Here an exemple:

It takes a bit of work (just the first time, mind you) but it looks fantastic in print out. All hail Wolf Lord Bill!

AB is great...

In the league I play in I know most of what each army is before I play it each week (1250 pts). I am able to build each army in AB and help determine where I might change around my adjustable 500 pts. to better fight my opponent for that round of battle. Also having Fantasy armies and helping buddies build their army lists I find AB invaluable. I use it several times a week. I used to use excel but found AB to be so much better... and faster

You cant beat AB for speed of putting a list together, I have used it for many years

I have all my units saved so I can pull together a list in a few minutes

Does help when you're putting together a list for your 13 year olds new army and he hasnt finished reading the codex and wants to go to war like now!

I do think it's a bit expensive for a software download, and having to pay each year for updates is harsh

I was considering using access to build a relatoinal database because I was taught to use them at college and know that I could create army bilder in almost ever aspect but I don't have access on my computer and that's probably more than army builder

(Spelling)

I like Excel too :-)

Here is my Excel 2007 worksheet.

I basically copy the units I want into a new sheet. Adjust the number of optional goodies I want to bring and presto, I'm done.

Quick, easy and my opponents don't have to read my crazily bad hand writing...

the thing about the space wolves files for army builder is it has the Rhinos using the new rules. I know most places have gone with this because of the German FAQ. But at my LGS the next tourney will be using the old Rhino rules because of the US FAQ which is what we use. So, just be sure to ask the tourney judge before you get into it.

AB is a great initial list builder. I go through the codex after making a list to double check it. Before the 5th edition I would find point/stat errors but nothing that breaks a list. I havent had a chance to check the SW codex against it yet but the two things I have noticed so far are that they use the new marine points cost on the Rhinos (which is arguable) and that the Blood Claw jump packs have T5.

I used Excel for a while but the tournaments wouldnt accept them and requested an AB printout.

I concur; it is especially helpful when you have multiple armies, too.

deedark, you don't have to pay for any updates. Just go to the Army Builder Maintainer website every now and then and see if they've updated the database, then download for free.

@Valerian

I was aware of that, its the after a year it wont automatical check for and allow you to download new datafiles

This I feel isnt an update to AB, I would be happy to pay for software undates after a year but not for something that isnt even their property and I can do manually for free
