Purgation Squad Confusion

Hi good folk

So i have been playing some fairly big games lately, 1750p, and have had the chance to field my Purgation squad a couple of times, which consists of Justicar and 3Psycannon dudes. With them i have mostly faced Vanilla Marines and some Tyranids.

The reason I included them in the first place is becouse i thought they could deal a lot of S6 damage while Recieving little in turn, thanks to shrouding and Cover. I initially thought this would be a great combo, but by the emperor i was proven wrong..

I run a GM w. 5 termies, 6 termies, LR Crusader and 25pagk/3squads, and then this purgation squad. I have had quite good success with this list, Riding the HQ termies in Crusader and Deep Striking the other down my enemys throat, whilst my pagk mop the rest up and holds objectives and such.. And the army as a whole works quite efficiently, except for that damned, emperor forsaken, Purgation Squad! They do Nothing!

I mean they are a 4man squad that costs over 200p, and they are not like Terminators of something.. Why pagk are so costly to begin with is becouse their Nemesis Force weapon - Storm Bolter combo, with make them the All-Around unit of the game! but the purgation squad pagk costs as much to begin with, but looses his NFW-SB in exchange for Psycannon, !?which in addition makes him cost more than twice as much as a usual pagk!?!! And i just cant figure out how to squeeze the juice out of this..

They are moderate at killing marines, as they still get their Armour against Psycannon, and shrug of most damage at that point.. and against hordes, well then they have to frag at lest 6-7 each just to justify their existance.. and for the record they hardly do that..

So I dont see no point in having them.. for their Cost i could easilly take a Dread, another squad of Grey Knights, or just beef up the already existing squads.. The Way I see it "anything" would work better than the purgation squad (the way i am using them), so therefor i decided to ask You what you think about them Purgation squads..

Are they worth it? If they are, how would/do you us them?

Thanks in Advance!

The purgation squads are always out for me since I can get an =][= lord with a lot more dakka (Psycannon, Plasma Cannon, 2x Heavy Bolter) for the same price as a 3 PC Purg Squad and have an open HS slot. I assume you planted them in cover where you could take advantage of both the cover save and their shrouding...

Since you are running PAGKs, if you want the Psycannons - I would think you would be better served by sticking the psycannons in those groups. You would have an extra 50 points left over, or you could simply buy more psycannons and end up with 5 psycannons vs. the 3 in the purgation squad.

I generally had rather good success with my purgation squads. I normally took a four man squad, with three psycannons. Their performance was always game turning, and due to cover and shrouding they never lost a model (hell, most of the time never even shot at). I don't use them anymore though, as I needed more troops, then just a couple heavy support marines. So now I use more psycannons in my PGK squads, or mini purgation squads, which double as scoring units now, as well as DAKKA machines! Yay!

Just take a "mini-purg" squad: 5-man PAGK Troops squad with 2 psycannons. Costs 200pts, scores, has plenty of ablative wounds, and can put out enough dakka to be a reasonable threat. Plop it down on a home objective, and enjoy!

The purgation squad suffers from being horribly over-costed and not Scoring. And when it compete for valuable HS slots that can be used for anti-tank dreads and raiders, it absolutely can't compete.

What with the switch to only troops are scoring, mini-purge squads are the way to go. However, i wouldn't be suprised if in the new dex (whenever that is), one of the changes would be that more of our infantry becomes scoring (either moving options to regular GK squads or something saying "grey knights in PA count as scoring, whatever FoC slot they fill"). after all, we're hard pressed for bodies, and to commit even 5 to a unit that cannot score is game changing.

Nah, you need at least 8-man. Even with 'Shrouding' they still die fairly quickly to massed enemy fire/AP3-.

I doubt it. I'm hoping they'll simply give the Troop squads Deepstrike capability (with maybe a re-roll to scatter, due to their experience/superior teleport technology), and do away with the teleport attack (in FA) and Purgation (in Heavy) altogether.

Typically, I take 6-man mini-purg squads and 8-10 man main battle squads (either purely vanilla, or with 1 incinerator if in a raider). That seems to work just fine. The 6-man squad, with shrouding and cover, and with scarier targets closer to the enemy, tends to survive just fine. Of course, if some CC squad manages to deep-strike or flank-march right to them, they'll die, but in that case I've made some grave tactical error by letting that happen and not supporting my squad, so it's my own damn fault anyway. :)
