New Guy Needing Help

Hey guys. Well after much debating I decided to wait for the new codex to come out before I start collecting my Space Wolves army, which is supposed to come out later this year, and focus on gathering a pure GK army, something I wanted to do for awhile. Anyway, I'm just asking for some advice on what to expect when playing them, such as Tactics you've used that worked, best way to field/run units, etc. Money-wise it shouldn't be difficult for me because I'm buying them off a few cool guys who will give me a good deal. Thnxs for your help ^_^

Welcome to the Ordo Malleus :) one of the most challenging armies in 40k

I'd advise reading Silent Requim's 'Water Warrior' tactica, which is stickied at the top of this forum. It was written for 4th edition, but many of the same principles he outlined then still apply now.

If it's pure GK you're after, you'll need the following (not all at once, but build up to it) ;

Grandmaster (bling out the Brother-Captain model in the box, or use Brother-Captain Stern). In smaller games, use the same model for a Brother-Captain

4 x Terminators (remember to get an incinerator and 2 x psycannon arms, so you can tool out the squad for different situations. Modelling 1-2 of them with TH+SS arms is also a good idea, but magnetise so you can swap out freely).

4 x Justicars (to lead your PAGK squads)

6 x psycannon Grey Knights

4 x incinerator Grey Knights (for mechanised lists)

36 x storm bolter Grey Knights (so you can fill out your squads with just storm bolter if you don't wanna use special weapons)

2 x Dreadnoughts (fit them out with twin-lascannon and missile launcher, they're for smaller games)

2 x Landraiders (for mechanised lists)

Landraider Crusader (for mechanised lists, usually to transport the Grandmaster+retinue of Terminators)

Tactics-wise, it's up to you how to use them. Grey Knight function best as a mid-range shooty army, wearing down their opponents before finishing them in close-combat. They're also highly effective against Daemons, but often lack anti-tank (as a balancing mechanic, given how powerful they are against infantry).

I'd advise play-testing with a few squads in your exisiting SW army, so you can get a feel for them. They're not easy to win with, so expect to lose a fair few games, especially with a pure GK list.

Remember, always err on the side of caution (ie back up and shoot them) if you don't think you can win in close-combat. You don't get the charge bonus, so you should only charge enemy units that are nearly dead or gain substantial charge bonuses (like 'Furious Charge' or re-rolls to hit etc). The only exception is the Grandmaster+Terminator retinue, as they live for close-combat (so you should always aim to have them in there, hacking away).

Welcome brother to the Grey Knights!

Since I've started playing Grey Knights a few months ago, I've bought 3 5-man PAGK squads, a couple PAGK blisters, 2 Psycannon PAGK, and the Grey Knight Terminator Box set plus a few other termiantors off ebay. Together with a pair of land raiders and a lascannon Dreadnought, you can put together a couple of lists at various point levels.

Bottom line, 2 full squads of PAGK, a terminator squad, 2 Land Raiders and a Dread has got me covered to 1750 points, which with the help of the friendly guys here on the forum I've put together in a pretty good list.

As for tactics, it's going to depend on your opponent, what he's got and what the objective is. Darius basically covered it though with "wear him down and then finish off in CC."

I cannot recommend Silent Requiem's tactica highly enough.

Finally, be aware that this is a challenging army to play. Don't get discouraged!

Most people take either 8 or 10-man squads of PAGK. The 8-man squads often have two Psycannons while 0-2 Incinerators are in 10-man squads.

In the past edition small 5-man "mini-purgation" squads with two Psycannons were popular. These would be long-range support troops that don't use up precious heavy slots. I think these have lost a little favor in 5th edition, especially since fast attack GKs are no longer scoring.

Sometimes, in heavy LR lists, you'll see small squads with Incinerators. These lists rely on the mobility and firepower of the LRs (or LRCs). When the opportunity arises (such as after a tank shock), the PAGKs jump out and roast an isolated or important squad.
