Spagunk's WIP hootinanny

Spagunk

Recommended Posts

Per the CoI challenge, I am making my first display. These are two of 5 total assault marines that I will be building along with my Baal Predator (to be built later this week). I should also have the remaining marines built by then.

Without further adieu, my 2 of 5 marines:

Marine 1

Marine 2 (Torso and legs)

Please note, I am trying a different method to my painting. Similar to a video on youtube by a guy name jawaballs, I decided to paint the head separately from the main body. The arms will be painted separately only if they end up close to the body. This will be done to aid the ability for me to paint the entire model.

I'll try to have everything "Assembled" by the end of the week. That way, I have a good couple of weeks to primer before I start painting.

As you will notice, I assembled my tank body. I decided that since this is a tank, I won't have to bother with painting the interior. I also added a MKI predator plate to the back. It was a small modification but For whatever reason I like the profile it gives. I was hoping to pick up a plastic dreadnought engine but that didn't work out for me. So i put that plate on the back.

Notes on what I learned: First off, I learned that krazyglue is a fickle mistress. Specifically, I had several mishaps with both the quantity and the consistency in which the krazyglue dried. You will most likely notice that there appears to be varying thickness of the superglue. Well some of it is intentional (Side sponsons) while other places was not. I have a small brush that comes with my glue so I though that it would help with making sure I only use small amounts. Well, it appears that the version I have crystallizes when it dries (Krazyglue brand). Other glue (those labeled cyanoacrylate or original super glue) dries much better and is much smoother than the stuff I was using so I will be switching to generic stuff from now on. Later, I think I will switch over to Zap-a-Gap as many people swear by it (Used it when I was younger which was probably the reason why I had such a hard time of it).

Second observation, make sure you have exactly what you need before magnetizing stuff. One of the things that tripped me up the most was that I didn't get the magnets I needed until fairly late. As such, i did some improvisation that, although it works, most likely will bite me in the rear later (Notably the turret and associated turret weapons). Also, I didn't get files in time before I have affixed the magnets on the Turret weapons. As such, the assault cannon doesn't quite fit too well; will most likely have problems by the time I start painting.

Anyway, I am hoping that within the next couple of weeks I will have the predator primed (I get pretty busy sometimes so it is hard to find the time) and the full squad assembled and primed as well.

Had a wild hair up me bum and decided to do a quick base coat on two heads:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j165/spagunk/headfront.jpg

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j165/spagunk/headside1.jpg

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j165/spagunk/headside2.jpg

Not much to look at right now but basically, I painted them blood red (vallejo bloody red to be exact) and then painted the recesses with a wash of Baal Red. After that, I splashed on some quick black as the base coat for my metals.

Anyway, I'm probably going to be pretty slow on these as I find that it is better in the long run for me to concentrate on one figure at a time rather than a production line of the entire squad. Once I get these heads painted up, I'll start on the next three. They are all bare so I will be working with flesh and I am hoping to finally figure a method I can work with consistently (I have a tendency to jump around with different techniques).

I am making blood angels but I do something different with mine. Assault marines get yellow stripes, Devastators get two blue stripes (1 stripe for heavy weapons in squads). VAS marines, since they are part of the 1st company, get full yellow helmets.

Example:

Whoa, is that VAS Member yours? The painting is brillaint!

Anyway, so far it looks like you've made a good start to your CoI Vow! You need to get them assembled soon, though, and then get stuck into the painting - the more time you have to spend on the painting, the better the models are going to come out in the end. :tu:

Well my guys are pretty much all assembled. I have two more heads to primer and start painting once I finish off the two already posted. These heads are bare so I want to put a little extra effort into them than I have done before.

The VAS member is indeed mine. They group of them were the last things I have painted recently so they represent my current stage of painting. The only bad part is that the photography covers up much of the mistakes I made so they look pretty good in pictures but aren't as impressive in real life.

One thing I am debating at this moment is whether or not I want to splash badab black or devlin mud on these guys as a second wash. I try to make my stuff look a bit grimy so the coat of black does well to make them looks somewhat weathered. Unfortunately, I still have not perfected how best to apply said coat. Right now, I have to paint the metal details and then take care of the yellow striping for squad type. Once that is done, I can do my wash, color the eyes and be done with the helmets. I'm also considering using one of the 5 models as a test mini to see if I can improve my technique a bit.

More Pics

I slopped on another wash of badab black (yeah, i know it pretty much annihilated my baal red wash) after painting the base detail work (metal and yellow stripes). Finished off with a highlight of Fiery orange/blood red for the main part, Mithril silver for the metal. Lenses were done with basic green/green+white and ultramarine/ultramarine+white. They turned out better than I expected. The eyes were done with a base of black, kelly green+black, Kelly green then kelly green+white for the reflection.

Now, on to the bare heads!

Painted heads. I am really ticked off with them. I thought i did a REALLY good job with them both. However, close up revealed all the imperfections I made. Oh well. Here they are:

  • 2 weeks later...

Another update. Almost done with the main bodies. Once I get all the torsos done, I get to start on the jump packs (yay :) ).

  • 3 weeks later...

Haven't been doing the updates as much as I would like. However, I would like to report that I now have the main bodies for all five troopers done.

Left to do:

Bases and Jump packs. Once the bases are done, I'll post before I attach them to the troopers.

Here are the final pictures for my assault marines. Due to a misunderstanding on my part, I have been disqualified from the CotI contest (I didn't see the rule that said we had to post our WIP in the main thread). As such, this will be the last major update for this thread. I will, at some point in the future, finish up the Predator but not for awhile as I wait for my ego to heal.

On with the show:

I will be posting these guy in the Hall of Honor for all to see them completed.
